Taxonomy & naming
Knodus caquetae was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1945, as part of his report on fishes obtained during a Colombian zoological survey, published in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (volume 97). The type locality is the Caquetá River system of Colombia. The specific epithet caquetae refers directly to that drainage, Latinising the river name in the genitive.
Subsequent revisionary work on the subfamily Stevardiinae and allied groups — particularly Lima et al. (2003) as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes — treats Knodus caquetae as a junior synonym of Bryconamericus hypopterus Fowler, 1943, a species described two years earlier from overlapping Amazonian Colombian material. Under that treatment the valid name for this fish would be Bryconamericus hypopterus, with caquetae sunk. The genus Knodus itself is a Neotropical characid lineage of small, active schooling fishes distributed widely across Amazonian drainages; as currently circumscribed it contains numerous species, with the Caquetá and broader Amazonian basins of Colombia and adjacent countries hosting several of them.
