Taxonomy & naming
Knodus delta was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1972. The holotype (ZMH 1473, 1.5 in SL) was collected in Ecuador. The valid name as governed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Knodus delta Géry, 1972; the species remains in the genus Knodus within the family Characidae.
A taxonomic revision of Knodus by Ferreira and colleagues (2020) confirmed K. delta as a valid species, placing it within the subfamily Stevardiinae — a diverse and largely Neotropical clade of characids distributed across South American river basins. The genus Knodus contains several dozen small-bodied species and is particularly diverse in the upper Amazon drainage of Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia. Within this genus K. delta is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of meristic characters, but detailed comparative diagnoses are not widely reproduced in the hobbyist literature.
Morphology
Knodus delta is a small, streamlined tetra with a reported maximum standard length of 1.5 in for males and unsexed individuals. Like other Knodus, it is a slender, fusiform fish typical of fast-water benthopelagic characids: a moderately compressed body, a terminal mouth, and the characteristic adipose fin of the Characidae between the dorsal and caudal fins.
Detailed colour descriptions from wild material are sparse in the available literature. Small Knodus species generally display a pale silvery to yellowish ground colour with a faint lateral band or stripe running from behind the opercle toward the caudal peduncle, and limited, if any, red or blue ornamentation. Because K. delta remains rarely encountered in the aquarium hobby, colour notes from living specimens are largely absent from the accessible record; most published morphological data derive from preserved holotype and paratype material.
Habitat
Knodus delta is recorded from the Marañón–Nanay, Napo–Ambyiacu, and Putumayo river drainages of western Ecuadorian Amazonia. These are upper Amazon tributary systems draining the eastern Andean slopes and the adjacent Amazonian lowlands, characterised by a mix of white-water, clear-water, and black-water rivers depending on catchment geology and vegetation cover.
As a benthopelagic species, K. delta occupies the lower to mid-water column and is associated with the small, often shaded, tributary streams and forest creeks typical of Amazonian Characidae. Water conditions in these habitats tend toward warm temperatures, soft to slightly acidic chemistry in clear-water drainages, and moderate to high oxygen from riverine flow. Precise field measurements from K. delta collection localities are not available in the sources consulted, but conditions consistent with the broader upper Amazon tetra fauna apply: temperatures roughly 72–82 °F, soft to moderately soft water with pH in the slightly acidic to neutral range.
Feeding
No species-specific dietary study of Knodus delta is available. Knodus is an omnivorous genus; members of the group are reported to consume small invertebrates, microcrustaceans, insect larvae, and organic detritus typical of small Amazonian stream communities. Surface-fallen terrestrial invertebrates are likely also taken opportunistically, as with most small Neotropical tetras.
In captivity, congeners maintained by aquarists accept a broad range of small live and frozen foods — bloodworm, Daphnia, brine shrimp — as well as quality micro-pellets and fine-grade flake. A varied diet mimicking the diversity of the wild invertebrate menu is recommended to maintain condition in small Characidae. Data on K. delta specifically in aquarium settings are sparse, and husbandry notes for the species are largely inferred from the genus.
Mating
No direct observation of mating behaviour in Knodus delta has been published in the accessible literature. As a member of the Characidae, the species is presumed to follow the egg-scattering open-spawning strategy universal in the family: males court females with displays and pursue them into fine-leaved vegetation or submerged roots, where eggs are scattered and fertilised without site preparation or pair bonding.
Male–female interactions in small Knodus congeners observed in captivity involve active chasing, with males displaying body posture and colour intensity to receptive females. No lasting pair bond forms and no parental care is provided; eggs are adhesive and settle among vegetation or substrate. Spawning is thought to be triggered by water-quality cues — slight temperature increase and water changes mimicking the onset of the wet season — as is typical for many Amazonian tetras.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Knodus delta has not been documented in the hobbyist literature reviewed for this article, reflecting its rarity in the trade. Based on the reproductive biology of the genus and of small Amazonian Characidae generally, the following account is a reasonable projection: pairs or groups conditioned on a varied live and frozen diet would be expected to spawn over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, depositing small adhesive eggs among vegetation.
Incubation at tropical temperatures (75–81 °F) would likely last five to seven days, producing tiny larvae that initially hang from plant surfaces before becoming free-swimming. First foods would need to be extremely small — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial fry liquids — owing to the small adult size and correspondingly minute fry. Adults provide no parental care and should be removed or the eggs transferred after spawning. No clutch-size data specific to K. delta are available.
In the aquarium
Knodus delta is essentially absent from the mainstream aquarium trade. It has not established itself as a hobby species and is not regularly listed by commercial wholesalers or specialist importers. Any specimens that reach aquarists would arrive as incidental bycatch in mixed Amazonian tetra shipments from Ecuador or Peru.
Were it available, the species' small size (under 1.5 in SL) and presumed peaceful temperament would suit a nano or species aquarium with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, subdued lighting, and a dark substrate to encourage natural behaviour. A group of six or more individuals would better suit the social nature typical of small schooling tetras. Water temperatures in the range of 73–81 °F are appropriate. In the absence of species-specific husbandry records, the standard care guidelines for small Amazonian tetras from similar drainages provide the most reliable baseline.
Conservation
Knodus delta is listed as Data Deficient (DD) on relevant assessments, indicating that insufficient data exist to make a direct or indirect assessment of its risk of extinction. The Data Deficient designation reflects the reality of small, cryptic Amazonian characids: populations are rarely surveyed, and the species is not conspicuous enough in museum collections or in the trade to generate the distribution and abundance data needed for a formal IUCN Red List category.
The western Ecuadorian Amazon where K. delta occurs faces ongoing pressure from deforestation, agricultural expansion, and extractive industries affecting the upper Amazon tributaries. While K. delta itself has not been specifically assessed for these threats, small-stream endemic characids are generally vulnerable to catchment-level habitat disturbance. A formal population survey and an updated IUCN assessment would provide a more meaningful conservation baseline for this and many related small Knodus species that share its poorly documented status.
