Knodus megalops is a small South American characin known in the hobby as the Big-eyed Tetra, named for the conspicuously large eyes that give its face an alert, wide-open expression relative to its diminutive body. Distributed in river systems of Brazil, it inhabits soft, acidic streams and can be found in both whitewater and blackwater biotopes — the sort of warm, low-mineral Amazonian habitat that many small tetras call home. It has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN and remains one of the less-documented members of its genus in the aquarium literature.

Taxonomy & naming

Knodus megalops was described by George S. Myers in 1929. The genus Knodus belongs to the family Characidae — the large, cosmopolitan family of characins that encompasses the vast majority of what hobbyists call tetras. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name; the species has not been subject to any subsequent generic reassignment recorded in the major checklists.

The genus Knodus is a diverse assemblage of small South American characins, most of them slender, silver-bodied schooling fish with an uncomplicated lifestyle. Many species in the group are superficially similar and are distinguished primarily by meristics, fin-ray counts, and proportional measurements rather than striking colour patterns. Knodus megalops sits firmly in this mould — it is identified by its large eyes relative to head length, the character captured in its specific epithet.

Morphology

Knodus megalops is a slender, laterally compressed small tetra with a streamlined, torpedo-shaped body typical of the genus. Its most immediately noticeable feature is its large eyes, which are proportionally prominent relative to head and body size — the trait that inspired both the scientific name and the common name Big-eyed Tetra. The overall colouration is silvery, likely with a faint lateral stripe or reflective midlateral band under strong lighting, as is common across the genus.

Precise size data for the species in the published literature is sparse. FishBase lists it as a small tetra; the majority of Knodus species reach 1–2.5 in standard length in adults, and megalops falls within that range based on available records. Males and females follow the standard characin pattern of females becoming noticeably plumper in the abdomen when gravid.

Habitat

Knodus megalops is reported from Brazil. The type locality falls within the range of Myers' 1929 collecting work, with the Rio Tapajós basin region cited as the probable area of origin. The species occurs in rivers and streams of South America, occupying both whitewater and blackwater stream types — a flexibility that is characteristic of several small South American characins that range across drainage boundaries.

The biotope preference is soft, acidic water: pH in the range of 5.5 to 7.0 with low hardness (2–10 dGH) and temperatures between approximately 22 and 79 °F (72–79 °F). This profile fits the typical slow-moving to moderately flowing Amazonian stream, often shaded by gallery forest, with leaf litter and submerged wood providing cover. Water colour ranges from clear to tannin-stained depending on the specific tributary.

Feeding

In the wild, Knodus megalops feeds as a generalist on small organisms available in its stream habitat: zooplankton, small crustaceans, insect larvae, and other invertebrates form the core of the diet, supplemented by algal material. This feeding strategy is typical of small schooling characins, which exploit a variety of prey items in the water column and at the surface.

In the aquarium the species accepts a broad range of foods without difficulty. Quality dry foods — small-grade flake, micro-pellets — provide a nutritional baseline, while regular supplements of small frozen or live foods (Daphnia, brine shrimp, micro-worms, Cyclops) improve condition and encourage natural foraging behaviour. Small, frequent meals suit its physiology better than a single large daily feeding.

Mating

Knodus megalops is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, following the reproductive pattern standard across the small South American characins. Males display to females with increased activity and flaring, pursuing receptive females through the water column or into fine-leaved vegetation. There is no sustained pair bond and no guarding of territory before, during, or after spawning.

Spawning takes place among fine-leaved plants or over open substrate, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited in scattered batches. Several males will pursue a single ripe female in a typical group spawning event. Conditioning the group on varied live and frozen foods brings females into breeding condition and raises spawning frequency.

Breeding

Breeding Knodus megalops follows the well-established protocol for small schooling characins. A separate, well-planted spawning tank with soft, acidic water matching wild parameters (pH 5.5–6.8, minimal hardness, temperature 75–79 °F / 75–79 °F) provides the right conditions. Fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or synthetic spawning mops give the adults a medium in which to scatter eggs.

Adults should be removed after spawning as they will readily consume both eggs and newly hatched fry. Eggs are small and hatch within 24–48 hours at typical spawning temperatures; the yolk-sac fry become free-swimming after a further 2–3 days and require very fine first foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry food — before graduating to freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Growth is relatively rapid compared with larger tetras and the fry take on juvenile colouration within the first few weeks.

In the aquarium

Knodus megalops is a peaceful, schooling species well suited to a community aquarium with other small South American fish. As with all schooling tetras, it should be kept in a group of at least six individuals — ideally more — which reduces individual stress, encourages natural behaviour, and produces the visual effect of a moving school. A tank volume of 15 US gal or more provides adequate territory for a small school alongside compatible tankmates.

Water chemistry should be soft and acidic: pH 5.5–7.0, hardness up to 10 dGH, temperature 72–79 °F (72–79 °F). Good filtration with gentle flow, subdued to moderate lighting, and a darkened substrate with leaf litter, driftwood, or dense planting replicate the species' natural biotope and encourage confident behaviour. Compatible tankmates include other small, peaceful South American fish — pencilfish, small rasboras, dwarf cichlids, and corydoras — that share the same water chemistry requirements. The species is not demanding in terms of care and is a reasonable choice for aquarists keeping soft-water biotope setups.

Conservation

Knodus megalops has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). No formal population surveys or threat assessments have been published for this species specifically. As a small, widespread Amazonian stream fish it is unlikely to face the acute range-restriction pressures that threaten narrowly endemic species, but the broader concerns facing Amazonian freshwater biodiversity — habitat degradation, deforestation in riparian zones, and changes in water quality from agricultural runoff — apply across the region including the areas where this species occurs.

The species is not a major focus of the ornamental fish trade and most specimens in hobbyist hands are likely incidentally collected alongside more commercially important tetras. Its status relative to CARES or similar conservation programmes is not documented. Sourcing aquarium-bred stock wherever available remains the recommended practice as a general principle for Amazonian tetras.
