Knodus meridae was described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1911, with the type locality given as Mérida, in the Venezuelan Andes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer/CAS) records the valid name as Knodus meridae Eigenmann, 1911, and the species remains placed in Knodus, a genus of small characids in the family Characidae currently positioned within the tribe Stevardiini or the broader subfamily Characinae depending on the classification scheme followed.
The genus Knodus comprises a large number of small, often superficially similar species distributed across the Orinoco, Amazon, and adjacent drainages of northern South America. Many were described during the productive Eigenmann survey expeditions of the early twentieth century. Knodus meridae is one of the Andean representatives of the group, allied to other species occurring in the mountain stream systems of western Venezuela and Colombia.
Morphology
Knodus meridae is a small, slender, laterally compressed characid reaching a maximum standard length of approximately 1.5 in. Like most Knodus, it presents the generalised body plan of a small open-water characin: a fusiform profile, moderately large eyes relative to head size, a small terminal mouth, and the characteristic adipose fin of the family Characidae.

Andean stream systems in this region are characterised by cool to warm, well-oxygenated water, moderate to low mineral content, and often neutral to slightly acidic pH.
Based on FishBase records and the ecological context of the Mérida drainage, the species occupies freshwater habitats at moderate elevation, with water temperatures in the range of approximately 75–79 °F and near-neutral pH. Like many Andean characids, it is likely associated with riffle and run habitats with clean substrates, abundant periphyton, and marginal riparian vegetation providing invertebrate input.
Feeding
Knodus meridae is presumed to be a microinvertebrate feeder and opportunistic omnivore, consistent with the ecology of small characids in Andean stream systems. The natural diet likely includes small aquatic invertebrates such as chironomid larvae, microcrustaceans, and other benthic and drift invertebrates, supplemented by algae, periphyton, and small amounts of plant material.

A varied diet supports health and colour; live or frozen invertebrates are valuable conditioners for fish intended for breeding.
Mating
Like other small characids of its size class, Knodus meridae is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care. Courtship in small Knodus typically involves brief pursuit displays by males, with spawning occurring among fine-leaved vegetation or over open substrate. Eggs are small and non-adhesive or weakly adhesive, released in small numbers during brief spawning episodes.

In the aquarium
Knodus meridae is rarely encountered in the ornamental trade and is not a mainstream aquarium fish. When kept, it is best suited to a small, species-appropriate biotope aquarium reflecting its Andean stream origins: clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate current, a substrate of fine gravel or sand, and some fine-leaved vegetation or moss. Tankmates, if any, should be small and peaceful.
A group of six or more individuals is recommended, as small characids are schooling fish that show more natural behaviour and less stress in numbers. Water temperature in the low to mid 20s Celsius, near-neutral pH, and low to moderate hardness are appropriate parameters. The species' small size makes it compatible with nano and biotope setups but vulnerable to predation by larger tankmates. Feeding poses no particular challenge given its acceptance of standard small-particle aquarium foods.
Conservation
