Knodus mizquae was described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1943, with the type locality given as the Río Mizque in the Cochabamba Department of Bolivia. The Río Mizque is a tributary of the Río Grande, which drains eastward through the Bolivian Andes into the Mamoré-Amazon system. The authority is rendered in parentheses — (Fowler, 1943) — indicating that the species was originally placed in a different genus before being transferred to Knodus.
The genus Knodus belongs to the family Characidae, the most species-rich family of freshwater fishes in South America. Knodus is a largely Amazonian and Andean genus of small characins, and comparative morphological work by Zarske and Géry (2006) on related species has helped clarify the limits of the genus. Knodus mizquae sits among the Andean members of the genus, a group adapted to cool, swift waters at elevation rather than the warm lowland rivers occupied by many of their relatives.
Morphology
Knodus mizquae is a small, elongate characin. The holotype specimens measure 1.5 in in standard length (SL), making this one of the smaller members of its genus. Body depth is approximately 3.65 times in SL, indicating a moderately slender body form typical of stream-dwelling Knodus rather than the deeper body seen in more open-water characids.
As with most Knodus species, the general form is that of a fusiform, laterally compressed small tetra with a terminal mouth, a small adipose fin, and a forked caudal fin. Comparative data from related species such as Knodus dorsomaculatus suggest a maximum length in the region of 2 in SL for Andean Knodus, consistent with the holotype measurements for K. mizquae. Detailed colour pattern descriptions from freshly preserved material are not available in the secondary literature, and living coloration is undocumented in the hobbyist record.
Habitat
The Río Mizque runs through the Cochabamba Department of Bolivia at elevations reaching approximately 1,2185 ft near the type locality, though the river system spans a considerable altitudinal range from over 3,0 ft in the high Andes down to lower valleys. At these elevations, the water is characteristically cold — temperatures around 59 °F (59 °F) are typical for Bolivian Andean Knodus streams according to comparative ecological data — fast-flowing, highly oxygenated, and probably clear or lightly turbid during dry season low flows.
The Río Mizque ultimately joins the Río Grande, placing K. mizquae within the upper Mamoré sub-basin of the Amazon drainage. Stream habitats at this altitude in Bolivia support relatively sparse but specialised fish communities adapted to swift currents, cool temperatures, and the seasonal flood pulses of the Andean foothills. Whether K. mizquae is strictly confined to the Río Mizque drainage or occurs more broadly across similar habitats in Cochabamba and neighbouring departments remains unknown.
Feeding
No published dietary data are available specifically for Knodus mizquae. By analogy with other small Knodus and Characidae from similar Andean stream habitats, the species is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore or micro-invertivore, consuming small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and other benthic or drift organisms — along with organic particles and possibly some algal material.
The fast-flowing, cool streams of the Bolivian Andes deliver a seasonally variable supply of terrestrial invertebrate drift, and many small characins in such habitats rely heavily on allochthonous input, taking fallen insects and other surface items alongside aquatic prey. In the absence of specific stomach-content studies, detailed dietary characterisation is not possible.
Mating
No observations of reproductive behaviour in Knodus mizquae have been published, either from field studies or from captive populations. As a member of Characidae, the species is almost certainly an egg-scatterer with no parental care, following the reproductive mode typical of the vast majority of the family.
By analogy with closely related small Knodus, spawning is likely to involve adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or substrate interstices in flowing water, triggered by seasonal cues such as rising water temperature and the onset of the rainy season. Males likely compete for access to females, though no specific behavioural data exist for this species.
Breeding
Knodus mizquae has not been bred in captivity as far as is documented in the hobbyist or scientific literature, and the species is essentially absent from the ornamental-fish trade. The cold-water, high-altitude origin of the species suggests it may require cooler temperatures than most commonly kept tetras, which would make it a speciality item for cold-water or subtropical tank keepers rather than a community-aquarium fish in the conventional tropical sense.
Generalising from other small South American Characidae, the likely reproductive pattern would be egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with adhesive eggs and no parental care. Incubation times and fry size are undocumented. Any breeding attempt would need to replicate the cool, well-oxygenated, fast-flowing conditions of the Andean stream habitat.
In the aquarium
Knodus mizquae is not available in the ornamental-fish trade and is unknown in the hobby. The combination of a high-altitude Andean type locality, very small adult size (under 1.5 in SL), Data Deficient conservation status, and absence from any hobbyist record means it has never been established as a kept species. Any attempt to maintain it would require specialised cold-water conditions — temperatures in the region of 59–64 °F (59–64 °F) — strong current, high oxygenation, and the soft-acid to circumneutral water chemistry typical of Bolivian Andean streams.
For aquarists interested in cold-water Andean characins as a group, better-documented congeners or related genera may offer a more practical entry point until survey work clarifies the distribution and availability of K. mizquae.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Knodus mizquae as Data Deficient (DD), meaning that insufficient information exists to make a reliable assessment of its extinction risk. The Data Deficient rating is not a finding of safety; it reflects an absence of adequate survey data on distribution, population size, and habitat condition rather than confirmed abundance.
The Río Mizque catchment in Cochabamba, Bolivia, has experienced significant land-use change through agricultural expansion and grazing in the Andean highlands, which can drive sedimentation and flow alteration in small stream systems. Until targeted surveys establish the actual range and abundance of K. mizquae, its true conservation situation remains uncertain. The species' apparently narrow endemic range — defined by a single river-system type locality — suggests that any degradation of Río Mizque habitats could have serious consequences for it.
