Knodus pasco was described by the German ichthyologist Axel Zarske in 2007. The specific epithet refers to the Pasco region (Región Pasco) of central Peru, from which type material was collected — a straightforward toponym identifying the type locality. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Knodus pasco Zarske, 2007.
The genus Knodus Eigenmann, 1911 belongs to the family Characidae, the largest family of freshwater fishes in the Neotropics and one of the most species-rich vertebrate families on Earth. Within Characidae, Knodus has historically been placed in or near the tribe Stevardiinae, a broad grouping of South American characids that includes many small-bodied schooling fishes of the Amazon and Orinoco systems. The genus currently comprises several dozen species distributed across Andean foothills and adjacent lowland drainages from Venezuela and Colombia south through Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. Species delimitation within Knodus has been revised multiple times as molecular and morphological studies have refined the boundaries of the genus and its allies.
Morphology
Knodus pasco is a small, slender, laterally compressed characid typical of the genus. Knodus species generally reach 1–2.5 in standard length, though precise published size data for K. pasco specifically are not available in accessible literature. The body plan is the standard characid form: a single dorsal fin, a small adipose fin posterior to it, a forked caudal fin, and the moderately toothed jaws characteristic of Characiformes.
Coloration in Knodus species typically follows a cryptic silver-to-olive pattern: pale silvery flanks with a dark or iridescent lateral stripe running from the operculum toward the caudal peduncle, a dark spot or blotch at the caudal base, and a translucent to pale-yellow unpaired fins. The lateral line is typically complete or nearly so. Habitat
The type locality of Knodus pasco is in the Pasco region of central Peru, which encompasses both high-Andean headwaters and the upper Amazonian foothills — a transition zone where fast, cold highland streams descend into warmer, lower-gradient tributaries of the Amazon basin. Knodus species as a group occupy a broad range of Andean and sub-Andean stream habitats, favouring well-oxygenated, moderately flowing to fast-flowing waters with gravel or rocky substrates and riparian cover.
In this type of foothill habitat, water is typically cool to warm (around 64–79 °F depending on altitude and season), soft to moderately hard, and neutral to slightly acidic, with good clarity and high dissolved oxygen from the current. Feeding
No specific dietary studies of Knodus pasco have been published in accessible literature. Knodus species are generally regarded as opportunistic omnivores or micro-carnivores in the water column, taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and terrestrial insects that fall onto the surface — along with algae, periphyton, and fine organic material. This is consistent with the feeding ecology of many small characids in Andean foothill streams, where the invertebrate community is tied to leaf litter, submerged wood, and current-swept riffle zones.
In the aquarium, congeners and ecologically similar small characids accept a wide range of commercial foods: fine-grade flake and micro-pellets, frozen Daphnia, Cyclops, and brine shrimp nauplii, and live foods. For species of this size and ecological background, small particle sizes and varied live or frozen offerings are preferable to flake alone.
Mating
No mating observations for Knodus pasco have been published. As a member of Characiformes, it almost certainly reproduces by egg-scattering open spawning — the ancestral reproductive mode of the order, in which males pursue females through the water column and eggs are released and fertilised in open water or among fine-leaved vegetation, with no parental care after spawning.
In Andean foothill streams, the timing of characid reproductive activity is typically linked to seasonal hydrological cycles: the onset of the rainy season and associated rises in water level, flow, and temperature cue spawning in many species. Fine-leaved aquatic plants, submerged roots, and flooded riparian vegetation are typical egg-deposition sites for small characids in these environments, though this is inferred from the broader group rather than from direct observations of K. pasco.
Breeding
Knodus pasco has not been bred in captivity according to any published hobbyist or scientific accounts. The species is not known from the aquarium trade and has generated no husbandry literature. By analogy with small Knodus congeners and ecologically similar Andean characids, captive breeding would likely follow the standard egg-scattering pattern: a conditioning period on varied live and frozen foods, a spawning tank with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, soft and slightly acidic water replicating the species' Andean foothill origin, and removal of adults after spawning to prevent egg predation.
Fry of small characids of this type are typically tiny at hatching and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry foods as first foods, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and finely powdered dry foods within a week or two. These are broad inferences from the clade; no first-hand breeding data exist for this species.
In the aquarium
Knodus pasco is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby and has not appeared in commercial trade in any documented way. Any husbandry notes here are therefore extrapolated from the genus and from comparable small Andean characids rather than from direct experience with the species.
Its Andean foothill origin suggests it would do best in cool to warm, well-oxygenated water with moderate flow — temperatures in the range of 68–79 °F, pH near neutral, and low to moderate hardness. Good filtration providing some current, a planted tank with open swimming space, and peaceful tankmates of similar size would suit a fish of this ecology. Like most small Knodus species, it would likely be most comfortable and least stressed in a group of six or more of its own kind. In the absence of any hobbyist records, these are entirely precautionary inferences; an aquarist who sources this species would be working with essentially no established husbandry baseline.
Conservation
Knodus pasco has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation status. As a species described relatively recently (2007) from a single region of Peru and not yet widely surveyed, it has not accumulated the distributional and population data needed for an IUCN assessment under standard criteria.
The Pasco region of central Peru encompasses some areas of significant deforestation, agricultural expansion, and mining activity, particularly in the lower-altitude foothills. These pressures can affect stream habitat quality through sedimentation, chemical contamination, and altered hydrology. Whether K. pasco faces meaningful population-level threats is unknown without targeted survey work. As a small, range-restricted foothill characid in a region of active land-use change, it warrants monitoring as part of broader ichthyological surveys of the Andean foothills of central Peru.
