Knodus tanaothoros was formally described in 2005 by Stanley H. Weitzman, Naércio A. Menezes, Hans-Georg Evers, and Jay R. Burns. The species is placed in the genus Knodus, a characid group whose composition has shifted considerably as molecular and morphological studies have reorganised the broader Stevardiinae assemblage. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, Fricke & van der Laan) records the valid name with the authority in parentheses, indicating the species was originally placed in a genus other than Knodus or that the combination requires the parenthetical convention.
Knodus belongs to the subfamily Stevardiinae within the family Characidae as recognised by current consensus taxonomy. The genus accommodates numerous small, superficially similar species across the Amazon drainage, and several members were described or revised in a series of papers in the early 2000s. Distinguishing Knodus species reliably requires close attention to meristic counts and subtle morphometric ratios; field identification in a mixed-species stream is effectively impossible without specimens. No widely accepted common name is recorded for K. tanaothoros.
Morphology
Knodus tanaothoros is a small, slender fish, with FishBase recording a maximum standard length of 1.5 in. The body form is typical of the genus: fusiform and moderately compressed, with a pointed snout, a small terminal mouth, and the pair of dorsal and adipose fins characteristic of all characids. In captivity, a slight drop in water temperature and a water change can simulate this trigger and prompt spawning activity in conditioned pairs.
Breeding

As a small shoaling characid, the species would benefit from being kept in a group of at least six to ten individuals to minimise stress and encourage natural schooling behaviour. Its diminutive size makes it unsuitable as a tankmate for larger or predatory fishes; it would be better housed with other small Amazonian species of similar scale. For most aquarists, access to this species is currently limited to specialist scientific or conservation collections.
Conservation
Knodus tanaothoros has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; the species carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). This is typical of the vast majority of small Amazonian characids described in recent decades — the sheer number of species described faster than assessment programmes can keep pace with means that most remain outside the formal Red List framework.
The broader conservation context for small Amazonian stream fishes is one of escalating pressure. Deforestation, agricultural runoff, gold-mining activity, and hydrological alteration affect large portions of the Amazon basin, degrading the stream-margin habitats on which species like K. tanaothoros depend. Without a formal range assessment or population estimate, it is impossible to evaluate the species' resilience to these pressures. Its apparent restriction to a specific Brazilian Amazon locality makes it potentially vulnerable to local habitat change.
