Knodus tiquiensis is a small characin described in 2006 from the Tiquié River drainage, a tributary of the upper Rio Negro in the Brazilian Amazon. Like the rest of the genus Knodus, it is a compact, schooling fish adapted to the warm, acidic blackwaters of the Rio Negro basin. Its restricted range within a single river drainage makes it little known in the aquarium hobby, and published data on the species remain sparse.

Taxonomy & naming

Knodus tiquiensis was described by Ferreira and Lima in 2006. The type locality is the Tiquié River, a tributary of the upper Rio Negro system in the Brazilian Amazon. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name as Knodus tiquiensis Ferreira & Lima, 2006.

The genus Knodus belongs to the family Characidae and encompasses a diverse assemblage of small Neotropical characins found across Amazonian and Orinoco drainages. Species of Knodus are typically modest in size and schooling in habit, and many occupy blackwater or clearwater forest streams. The Tiquié River drainage, which flows through the far northwest of Brazil near the border with Colombia, supports a rich and still partly undescribed ichthyofauna; K. tiquiensis is among the species known only from this system.

Morphology

Knodus tiquiensis is a small characin. Based on the dimensions typical of congeners, maximum standard length is likely below 1 in SL, though published measurements for this species specifically are not widely available. The body form follows the general Knodus plan: slender, laterally compressed, with the typical characid adipose fin, a short-based dorsal fin, and a forked caudal fin.

Coloration details for K. tiquiensis in life are not well documented in accessible literature. Congeners from similar Rio Negro blackwater habitats tend toward a translucent to pale silvery body with a narrow dark lateral stripe and a small humeral spot, often with a subtle iridescent sheen under good lighting. Until detailed published accounts become available, precise meristic and color data for this species should be treated as data sparse.

Habitat

Knodus tiquiensis is endemic to the Tiquié River drainage within the upper Rio Negro system, Amazonas state, Brazil. The Tiquié flows through dense Amazonian rainforest on the northwestern edge of the Amazon basin, draining into the Rio Uaupés before reaching the main stem of the Negro.

The Rio Negro and its tributaries, including the Tiquié, are archetypical Amazonian blackwater systems: soft, highly acidic water stained dark brown by dissolved humic and fulvic acids from decomposing forest litter. Water temperatures in this region typically range from approximately 72–82 °F, with pH values between roughly 4.5 and 6.5 reflecting the very low mineral content of the surrounding Precambrian shield. Knodus tiquiensis is presumed to inhabit the shallow, vegetated margins and flooded forest zones of these streams, as is typical for small characins in the Rio Negro basin.

Feeding

Detailed dietary studies of Knodus tiquiensis are not available in published aquarium literature. By analogy with well-studied congeners from similar Amazonian blackwater habitats, the species is likely a generalist micropredator feeding on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, and insects falling onto the water surface — along with any available microalgae or detritus.

In the aquarium, Knodus species generally adapt readily to prepared foods such as fine flake and micro-pellets, supplemented by small live or frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and micro-worms. A varied diet is recommended to maintain condition and color.

Mating

No specific reproductive observations for Knodus tiquiensis have been published in accessible aquarium literature. The species is presumed to follow the reproductive pattern typical of small Neotropical characins in the genus Knodus: open egg-scattering over fine-leaved vegetation or substrate, with no parental care by either sex.

As with congeners, spawning likely involves the pair releasing adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or leaf litter, after brief male courtship displays. Adults show no pairing bond and disperse after spawning. In the aquarium, conditioning with live and frozen foods, combined with a slight drop in water temperature to simulate Amazonian rainfall seasonality, may encourage spawning behavior in this and related species.

Breeding

Knodus tiquiensis has not been documented as established in captive breeding programs. General Knodus breeding husbandry, extrapolated from congeners, calls for soft, acidic water matching the species' Rio Negro origins — pH around 5.0 to 6.5, very low hardness, and temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius.

Eggs are adhesive and scattered among fine-leaved aquatic plants or spawning mops, hatching after several days at typical tropical temperatures. Adults will eat their own eggs and offer no parental care, so spawning adults should be removed or eggs transferred to a separate rearing container. Fry are small at hatching and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food as first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Published clutch-size data for K. tiquiensis specifically are not available.

In the aquarium

Knodus tiquiensis is not established as a common aquarium fish; its restricted range within a single remote river drainage means that wild specimens rarely if ever enter the international ornamental trade, and captive-bred stock is essentially absent from the hobby. Information here is therefore extrapolated from the general care requirements of Knodus and small Rio Negro characins.

Any specimens that do become available should be kept in soft, acidic, warm blackwater conditions reflecting their Rio Negro origins: pH 5.0–6.5, very low general hardness, and temperatures of 75–82 °F. A heavily planted aquarium with dim or filtered lighting, a dark substrate, and leaf litter on the bottom will encourage natural behavior and reduce stress. Like all small schooling characins, K. tiquiensis should be maintained in a group of at least six to eight individuals. Suitable tankmates are other small, peaceful blackwater species — pencilfish, small hatchetfish, dwarf cichlids, and similarly sized tetras from the Rio Negro region. The species is data sparse in hobby literature.

Conservation

Knodus tiquiensis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. The species is known only from the Tiquié River drainage in the upper Rio Negro, a restricted endemic range that, in principle, makes it potentially vulnerable to any significant alteration of its habitat.

The Tiquié River flows through Indigenous territories in the Brazilian Amazon, which currently affords the watershed a degree of legal protection. However, the species' restricted distribution means that future habitat pressures — deforestation, altered hydrology, or water-quality changes — could pose risks without a broader population to buffer local declines. A formal IUCN assessment would help clarify the species' conservation needs. In the meantime, K. tiquiensis remains little known to both science and the aquarium hobby.
