Knodus weitzmani is a small characid from the rio Curuá, a tributary of the rio Iriri in the upper rio Xingu basin of Pará state, Brazil. Described in 2009 from material collected near Altamira, it is known from a restricted Amazonian drainage and remains little studied outside its original description. Males of this species share with at least one congener a distinctive modification of the anal-fin tissue — club cells that likely function in courtship or chemical signalling — a character that sets the Knodus group apart from many of the small, superficially similar characids of the region.

Taxonomy & naming

Knodus weitzmani was described by Naércio A. Menezes, André L. Netto-Ferreira, and Karla D. S. Ferreira, with the original description published in 2009 in the journal Neotropical Ichthyology. The holotype, MZUSP 98666, was collected from the rio Curuá at Altamira, Pará, Brazil; the rio Curuá is a tributary of the rio Iriri, which in turn flows into the rio Xingu, placing this species in the upper Xingu drainage.

The genus Knodus belongs to the family Characidae and has historically been placed within the subfamily Stevardiinae (formerly treated as a subfamily of Characidae). The valid name as recognised under Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Knodus weitzmani (Menezes, Netto-Ferreira & Ferreira, 2009), with the authority in parentheses reflecting the original placement in a genus the species remains in today. The relationship of Knodus to closely allied genera in the Stevardiinae continues to be refined as molecular and morphological studies of Neotropical characids expand.

Morphology

The holotype of Knodus weitzmani measures 1.5 in standard length, indicating a small to moderately small characid. As with other Knodus species, the body plan is slender and fusiform — the typical build of an active, schooling characid adapted to clear Amazonian tributaries. Coloration details from the original description are sparse in available sources, but the genus generally shows a silvery body with a dark lateral stripe and pale to yellowish fins, without the elaborate colour patterns found in some tetra genera.

The most diagnostically interesting character recorded for K. weitzmani is the presence of modified anal-fin tissue bearing club cells in males, a feature shared with the congener K. tanathoros. These secretory cells, which open onto the skin surface near the anal fin, are thought to play a role in the release of pheromones or other chemical signals during courtship — a subtle but biologically significant specialisation within the genus.

Habitat

Knodus weitzmani is known from the rio Curuá near Altamira, in the state of Pará, Brazil. The rio Curuá is a blackwater to clearwater tributary of the rio Iriri, itself a major left-bank tributary of the lower rio Xingu. This region of the central Amazon basin is characterised by rivers draining heavily forested lowland and transitional terrain, with waters that range from slightly acidic and softly mineralised to near-neutral depending on the source geology.

Like other small Knodus species, K. weitzmani is most likely an inhabitant of marginal and near-bank zones in smaller stream channels, where leaf litter, submerged roots, and overhanging vegetation provide cover and concentrate invertebrate prey. The broader Xingu basin has been subject to significant hydrological disruption, notably from the Belo Monte hydroelectric complex immediately downstream of Altamira, making habitat integrity a concern for all species endemic to the region's smaller tributaries.

Feeding

No specific dietary data are recorded for Knodus weitzmani in available literature. By analogy with congeners and other small Stevardiine characids from comparable Amazonian habitats, the species is most plausibly an omnivore taking small invertebrates — microcrustaceans, insect larvae, and terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface — together with algae, biofilm, and organic detritus.

In aquarium conditions, small Knodus species typically accept a range of fine-grained prepared foods, frozen cyclops, daphnia, and newly hatched brine shrimp. The species' small size calls for appropriately sized food particles; regular feeding with live or frozen small invertebrates is likely to support colour and conditioning.

Mating

Spawning biology for Knodus weitzmani has not been documented in detail in the published or hobby literature. As a Stevardiine characid, the genus Knodus is expected to practice egg-scattering open spawning, with eggs deposited among fine-leaved plants or over substrate and no parental care provided by either sex after spawning.

The presence of modified anal-fin club cells in males of K. weitzmani — a character shared with K. tanathoros — suggests a chemical signalling component to courtship, possibly the release of pheromones that influence female receptivity or synchronise spawning activity. This kind of soft-tissue sexual modification in males is recognised in several Stevardiine lineages and represents a behavioural-chemical layer of reproductive biology beyond the visual displays typical of tetras.

Breeding

No captive breeding data are available for Knodus weitzmani in the accessible literature or hobbyist records. Given the species' membership in the Stevardiinae and the general biology of the group, breeding is expected to follow the egg-scattering pattern common to most small characids: a brief spawning sequence in which a pair or small group release adhesive or non-adhesive eggs among fine plant material or over soft substrate, followed by no parental investment.

Should the species become available in the hobby, a conditioning and breeding approach modelled on other small Amazonian characids — soft, slightly acidic water, dimmed lighting, fine-leaved spawning plants, and separation of eggs from adults immediately after spawning — would be a reasonable starting point. Fry would require very fine first foods such as infusoria or commercial liquid fry food before graduating to freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii.

In the aquarium

Knodus weitzmani is not established in the aquarium hobby and is unlikely to be encountered in the trade. Its description from a restricted locality in Pará, combined with the disruption of the Xingu basin by dam construction, means that wild-caught specimens would be exceptionally rare. No aquarium husbandry data exist for this species specifically.

Based on the biology of congeners and other small Stevardiine characids, K. weitzmani would be expected to thrive in a well-planted aquarium with gentle flow, soft to moderately mineralised water, and a slightly acidic to neutral pH. A species tank or a community with other small, peaceful Amazonian fishes would suit its temperament. The species' small size — around 1.5 in standard length — makes it appropriate for smaller aquaria, and a shoal of six or more individuals would be necessary to observe natural behaviour and reduce stress.

Conservation

Knodus weitzmani has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation status. Its known range is narrow — the rio Curuá near Altamira in the Xingu basin — and the broader region has been substantially affected by the construction of the Belo Monte hydroelectric complex, one of the largest dams in the world, which altered hydrology, flow regime, and connectivity across much of the lower rio Xingu and its tributaries.

The effect of Belo Monte on small-range endemics in the Xingu drainage tributaries such as K. weitzmani is poorly understood, but the combination of restricted known distribution, limited collecting records, and major habitat modification in the type-locality region suggests that precautionary concern is warranted. Additional surveys in the rio Curuá and adjacent Xingu tributaries would be necessary to establish whether the species retains viable populations and whether a formal IUCN assessment is needed.
