Lebiasina colombia was described by Ardila Rodríguez in 2008. It belongs to the genus Lebiasina, a group of small, elongate characoids placed in the family Lebiasinidae — the same family that includes the pencilfish (Nannostomus) and splashing tetras (Copella). Lebiasinidae are united by a number of anatomical characters within the wider order Characiformes and are sometimes called the pyrrhulinine tetras after the subfamily Pyrrhulininae.
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing authority for the valid name; the species is currently placed in Lebiasina as described, with authority Ardila Rodríguez, 2008.
