It belongs to the family Lebiasinidae, a Neotropical lineage of small to medium-sized characiforms that includes the pencilfish genera Nannostomus and Copella as well as the larger-bodied Lebiasina. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Lebiasina erythrinoides Valenciennes, 1850.

The genus Lebiasina is one of the larger-bodied members of the family and is found across northern and north-western South America, with representatives in Pacific-slope drainages and in the Orinoco and Amazon systems.
