Taxonomy & naming
Lebiasina festae was originally described as Piabucina festae by George Albert Boulenger in 1899, in a paper published in the Bollettino dei Musei di Zoologia ed Anatomia Comparata della R. Università di Torino (volume 14, no. 346). The holotype, catalogued as ZMUT 1591, was collected at the Laguna della Pita in the Darién province of Panama, establishing the Pacific-drainage lowlands of Central America as the type locality. Subsequent systematic revisions transferred the species to Lebiasina, and the combination Lebiasina festae (Boulenger, 1899) — with parenthetical authority reflecting the genus change — is the valid name as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Lebiasina belongs to the subfamily Lebiasininae within the family Lebiasinidae. Lebiasinidae is a small, exclusively Neotropical family within the order Characiformes, and sits near the pencilfish genus Nannostomus and the splash tetras of the genus Copella, though the precise inter-family relationships of basal characiforms remain a subject of active phylogenetic research. The specific epithet festae honours the Italian naturalist Enrico Festa, who collected extensively in Ecuador and Central America during the late nineteenth century and whose material formed the basis of a number of Boulenger descriptions.
Morphology
Lebiasina festae reaches a reported maximum of 5.5 in standard length, making it one of the larger members of its genus. The body is elongate and roughly cylindrical — more pike-like in proportion than the deep-bodied form typical of many tetras — with a moderately large mouth suited to a predatory or omnivorous diet. Coloration in preserved specimens tends to show a pale lateral stripe or series of blotches along the flank, though live colour patterns in Lebiasina species typically include coppery or reddish-brown tones that fade quickly in fixative.
Like other lebiasinids, the species lacks an adipose fin, a character that distinguishes Lebiasinidae from many other characiform families. The caudal fin is forked. The anterior digestive tract is modified to allow aerial respiration: the fish can gulp air at the surface and absorb oxygen through a vascularised region of the gut, an adaptation well suited to the poorly oxygenated swamp and stream-edge habitats the species frequents. Detailed meristic data specific to Lebiasina festae are sparse in the accessible literature, and the species warrants dedicated morphological study.
Habitat
Lebiasina festae is distributed along Pacific-slope drainages of Panama and Colombia, inhabiting lowland streams, swampy margins, and still or sluggish freshwater at tropical elevations. This drainage orientation — the Pacific slope rather than the Caribbean or Atlantic-facing drainages — defines its range and separates it biogeographically from Atlantic-slope lebiasinids to the east. The Darién region, where the type specimen was collected, straddles the narrowest part of the Central American isthmus and supports a diverse Neotropical fish fauna.
The species favours tropical freshwater environments where water temperature is warm year-round and where accumulated leaf litter, dense riparian vegetation, and irregular flooding create patchwork microhabitats. Conditions in such swampy lowland systems can include reduced dissolved oxygen, high temperatures, and soft, slightly acidic to neutral water — parameters that have driven the evolution of accessory air-breathing in multiple independent lineages across the tropics, including in Lebiasina. FishBase records the species as a lowland, tropical freshwater fish with a habitat type of streams and swamps.
Feeding
FishBase assigns Lebiasina festae a trophic level of approximately 3.6, placing it in the mid-level predator category — well above strict herbivory but below apex piscivores. This trophic position is consistent with a diet of small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, small crustaceans, and possibly small fish or tadpoles taken opportunistically. The relatively large mouth and elongate body plan support an ambush or pursuit strategy for taking mobile prey in vegetated, low-current environments.
In captivity, fish of similar lebiasinid genera accept a wide range of meaty foods: live and frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, brine shrimp, and small insects, along with quality carnivore pellets or sticks. A varied diet rich in animal protein is appropriate for the species' trophic position. Specific feeding observations for Lebiasina festae in the aquarium are not well documented in the hobby literature, but general Lebiasina husbandry suggests the fish are active, opportunistic feeders that should not be housed with much smaller tankmates.
Mating
Detailed mating behaviour has not been documented in the primary literature for Lebiasina festae specifically. Within the family Lebiasinidae, reproductive strategies span a remarkable range: the subfamily Lebiasininae (which includes Lebiasina) is associated with egg-scattering or leaf-spawning modes, while close relatives in the subfamily Pyrrhulininae include species with elaborate nest-guarding and even the famous aerial spawning of Copella arnoldi. For Lebiasina, the most probable mode based on family-level patterns is egg-scattering among vegetation or fine substrate, with no sustained parental care.
As with many Neotropical fishes from warm, low-oxygen environments, the spawning season may be tied to water-level fluctuations driven by wet and dry seasons, with rising water levels triggering reproductive activity. Sexual dimorphism in Lebiasina species may include female fullness when gravid, though specific dimorphic characters for L. festae are not reported in the sources available for this account.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Lebiasina festae has not been widely documented in the hobby literature, and the species is uncommon in the trade. Based on the lebiasinid reproductive template — egg-scattering over fine substrate or fine-leaved vegetation, small adhesive eggs, no parental care, and adults that may consume eggs — standard protocols for characiform breeders are a reasonable starting point. A species tank with soft, slightly acidic water, dim lighting, and abundant fine-leaved plants or spawning mops would replicate the leaf-litter swamp environment.
Temperature in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius (79–82 °F) is likely appropriate for conditioning and spawning, consistent with the species' lowland tropical distribution. Fry, if obtained, would initially require microfoods (infusoria, rotifers) before progressing to nauplius-stage brine shrimp. Given the lack of documented breeding records, any successful spawning would represent a meaningful contribution to the hobby's understanding of the genus.
In the aquarium
Lebiasina festae is a specialist's fish, rarely offered in the trade and better known to ichthyologists than to aquarists. Its facultative air-breathing is a genuine ecological curiosity and ensures the species is tolerant of the elevated temperatures and periodic oxygen dips that occur in a tropical aquarium, particularly in summer. A covered tank is advisable: like many air-breathing fishes it may gulp at the surface frequently, and the elongate body and active nature make it a capable jumper.
Given the mid-level predator trophic position and a maximum length approaching 5.5 in, tankmates must be chosen carefully — small tetras, small rasboras, and invertebrates may be at risk. Compatible companions include other mid-sized, robust Neotropical fishes: larger Corydoras, medium-sized cichlids in appropriately sized tanks, or other lebiasinids if available. Soft to neutral water chemistry, warm temperatures (75–82 °F), and a biotope-style setup with leaf litter and subdued lighting will show the fish at its best and support its natural behaviour. Little specific care data exists in the English-language hobby literature, and keepers willing to document their experience would fill a real gap.
Conservation
Lebiasina festae is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment recorded by FishBase as dated 15 April 2019. The Least Concern designation reflects that the species has a range spanning Pacific-slope drainages of both Panama and Colombia — a broader distribution than the single-basin endemics most vulnerable to threat — and that no population trend data suggests rapid decline at the time of assessment.
Nonetheless, the lowland stream and swamp habitats this species occupies are subject to ongoing pressure from agricultural expansion, deforestation, and altered hydrology across the Darién and Pacific-slope Colombia. The Darién region in particular, while largely forested compared to much of Panama, is under increasing land-use pressure. As a facultative air-breather adapted to naturally low-oxygen conditions, Lebiasina festae may be more resilient to organic pollution than obligate gill-breathers, but it cannot escape habitat loss or fragmentation. Continued monitoring of the Pacific-slope fish fauna of the Darién and adjacent Colombia is warranted.
