Taxonomy & naming
Lebiasina intermedia was described by the German aquarist and ichthyologist Heinrich Meinken in 1936. The type locality given in the original description is "Mittlerer Amazonas bei Santarém" (Middle Amazon, near Santarém, Brazil), but modern authors regard this locality as almost certainly erroneous — a recurrent problem with aquarium-import specimens of the early twentieth century, whose provenance was frequently misrecorded or assigned to the nearest known collecting point. Current opinion, as summarised in the primary literature, is that the species more likely originates from the Guiana Shield or one of the Brazilian upland shield drainages where most other Lebiasina occur, but no confirmed recolleciton has pinned a secure origin. The valid name as governed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is Lebiasina intermedia Meinken, 1936.
Within the family Lebiasinidae, Lebiasina is placed in the subfamily Lebiasininae alongside the pencilfish genus Nannostomus. The genus encompasses roughly two dozen recognised species distributed across the Andean foothills of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, the Guianan Highlands, and parts of northern and central Brazil. Lebiasina intermedia was characterised by Meinken as intermediate between L. bimaculata and L. multimaculata — closer to bimaculata in overall body form but resembling multimaculata in aspects of colour — a position reflected directly in the specific epithet.
Morphology
Lebiasina intermedia is a moderately elongated, laterally compressed fish typical of the genus. Lebiasina species generally reach around 4–6.5 in standard length, and L. intermedia falls within this range, though precise size data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature. The body is streamlined for life in flowing water, with a pointed snout, terminal mouth, and a plain or weakly patterned flanks displaying the lateral markings that distinguish it from its nearest congeners.
The genus is defined in part by the structure of the lateral-line canal, the scale count, and the dentition, which includes conical teeth suited to capturing small invertebrate prey. Colour in life is not well documented for this species specifically; Meinken's original description noted an intermediate pattern between L. bimaculata — which carries a prominent double spot marking — and L. multimaculata — which has a series of spots — suggesting that L. intermedia shows a transitional arrangement of lateral markings. Preserved specimens lose much of the colour contrast present in living fish, making retrospective morphological comparisons difficult.
Habitat
The true native habitat of Lebiasina intermedia is uncertain given the doubtful type locality, but contextual information from the broader genus points strongly toward well-oxygenated upland streams. Studies on congeners, including ecological surveys of Lebiasina species in Colombian and Brazilian shield drainages, consistently describe these fishes in clear, fast-flowing headwaters with rocky or sandy substrates, riparian shade from gallery forest, and low conductivity. Depths in occupied microhabitats typically range from 2–5 ft, and current is moderate.
Where water chemistry has been measured for ecologically similar Lebiasina species in Andean piedmont streams, values centre around 72 °F, pH near neutral (approximately 7.2), and very low conductivity (around 27 μS/cm), reflecting soft, mineral-poor catchment water. These parameters are broadly characteristic of headwater streams across the Guianan and Brazilian shield drainages as well. If L. intermedia does originate from such an environment, it would be adapted to clear, cool-to-warm, well-aerated water with a natural current — conditions markedly different from the sluggish lower Amazon reaches implied by its stated type locality.
Feeding
Lebiasina species are generalised predatory omnivores of small invertebrates, consistent with the opportunistic feeding strategy typical of Lebiasinidae in flowing-water habitats. In their native streams they prey on aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, and surface-fallen terrestrial insects, supplemented where available with algae and fine plant material.
For L. intermedia specifically, no dietary study is on record; the above is inferred from family and genus habits and from ecological surveys of congeners in similar habitats. In the aquarium, close relatives accept a range of live and frozen invertebrate foods — mosquito larvae, Daphnia, small worms — as well as quality prepared foods, and there is no reason to expect L. intermedia to differ markedly.
Mating
No specific observations of mating behaviour in Lebiasina intermedia have been published. Within Lebiasinidae as a whole, reproductive strategies vary by genus: Nannostomus and Nannobryon pencilfish scatter adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants without parental care, while some Lebiasina species engage in more elaborate courtship.
Given the biology of related lebiasinids, open-water or plant-associated egg deposition with no lasting parental investment is the most plausible expectation for this species. Male-to-male competition and female choice, driven by colour and body size, are typical of stream-dwelling characiform relatives. Until field or captive observations are documented for L. intermedia, however, the mating biology of this species remains effectively unknown.
Breeding
Lebiasina intermedia has not been bred in captivity under documented conditions in the accessible literature. Its scarcity in the aquarium trade — a direct consequence of the unresolved type locality and the absence of modern confirmed collections — means that captive experience with the species is essentially nil.
By analogy with better-known congeners, breeding would likely involve spawning over fine-leaved plants or among substrate debris in clear, well-oxygenated water, with eggs that develop without parental attendance. Soft, slightly acidic to neutral water mimicking upland shield stream conditions would be the rational starting point for any attempt, given what is known of the genus's ecology. Any successful captive breeding would constitute a significant contribution to knowledge of this little-documented species.
In the aquarium
Lebiasina intermedia is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. The species is rarely if ever exported, and given the uncertainty surrounding its collection locality, any specimens that do enter the trade may be misidentified or of uncertain provenance. Keepers interested in the genus are far more likely to encounter Lebiasina bimaculata or other congeners that are collected with some regularity.
Should specimens become available, guidance for the genus as a whole applies: a well-filtered, well-oxygenated aquarium with moderate current, a substrate of sand or fine gravel, and some plant cover or driftwood structure. Water should be soft to moderately mineralised, neutral to slightly acidic in reaction, and kept at subtropical to low-tropical temperatures consistent with the upland stream origin of most Lebiasina. These are active, predatory fish that need adequate space and appropriate tankmates — smaller, slower, or more delicate species risk being harassed or eaten.
Conservation
Lebiasina intermedia has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List. The combination of a suspect type locality, very few post-description records, and absence from modern systematic surveys means that the species' population status, range, and habitat condition are all essentially unknown. It is not possible to make a reliable conservation assessment without first resolving where the species actually occurs.
The broader genus Lebiasina faces the same pressures that affect stream fishes throughout its range: deforestation and agricultural expansion degrade the headwater streams it depends on, and upland species with narrow geographic ranges are inherently vulnerable to localised habitat loss. The unresolved status of L. intermedia itself — whether it represents a valid species awaiting rediscovery or a synonym of one of its congeners — is a question that only targeted field work across the plausible Guiana Shield and Brazilian Shield drainages can answer.
