Taxonomy & naming
Lebiasina minuta was described by Netto-Ferreira in 2012. The genus Lebiasina belongs to the family Lebiasinidae — the pencil-fishes and their allies — a group of small, soft-water Neotropical characoids distributed across South America and Panama. Lebiasinidae are placed within the order Characiformes and are distinguished from the larger characid families by their relatively elongate, pike-like body form and their often vivid lateral striping.
The valid name as accepted by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is Lebiasina minuta Netto-Ferreira, 2012. Because the species was described in Lebiasina, where it remains, the authority is written without parentheses. Data on the precise type locality beyond its placement in a Brazilian drainage system are sparse in the sources reviewed here.
The genus Lebiasina is one of several within Lebiasinidae and was historically grouped with the pencilfishes; modern molecular and morphological revisions have refined the internal arrangement of the family, though the higher placement of Lebiasina itself has remained stable.
Morphology
Lebiasina minuta is a small fish; the specific epithet minuta (Latin: small, minute) directly references its diminutive size, and the species is expected to reach no more than approximately 1–1.5 in standard length based on its name and family context. As with other Lebiasina, the body is elongate and slightly compressed, with a rounded snout and upturned mouth suited to surface and near-surface feeding in forest streams.
Members of Lebiasina typically display a prominent dark lateral stripe running from behind the head to the caudal peduncle, often accompanied by a reddish or orange flush on the fins and flanks in life — though the degree of colour development varies by species and condition. Detailed morphometric and meristic data for L. minuta beyond the original 2012 description are not available in the sources reviewed; exact fin-ray counts and scale formulae are not reproduced here to avoid error.
Sexual dimorphism, if present, is presumably subtle as in related species — females potentially deeper-bellied when gravid, males without obvious secondary characters.
Habitat
Lebiasina minuta is a Brazilian endemic confined to a single freshwater drainage system. Based on the ecological context of the family and genus, L. minuta almost certainly occupies narrow forest streams, likely flowing through lowland Amazonian or Atlantic Forest catchments where the water is soft, darkly stained with humic acids, and distinctly acidic.
Family-level data for Lebiasinidae indicate typical habitat parameters of 72–79 °F water temperature and pH in the range of 4.5–6.5. Conductivity is usually very low in these blackwater and clearwater systems. As a micro-endemic, L. minuta's geographic range is inherently narrow. Any deterioration of its host watershed — through deforestation, agriculture, or water abstraction — would directly threaten the species with little or no geographic buffer.
Feeding
Like other Lebiasinidae, Lebiasina minuta is presumed to be insectivorous and carnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates available at and near the water surface and in the water column. In forest streams, allochthonous input — insects and other invertebrates dropping from overhanging vegetation — forms a significant component of the diet for small predators such as this.
Detailed gut-content studies for L. minuta specifically have not been published in sources accessible during preparation of this article. Aquarium keeping notes for the genus suggest that small live and frozen foods (Daphnia, brine shrimp, micro-worm) are accepted readily in captivity.
Mating
Specific mating behaviour for Lebiasina minuta has not been documented in published sources reviewed here. Males in the genus may show heightened colour intensity — particularly on fins and flanks — during courtship, though the degree of sexual dichromatism in L. minuta is not described. At its small adult size, pair interactions are likely brief and not elaborate.
In soft-water forest stream species, spawning is often triggered by seasonal cues such as changes in rainfall, temperature, and water chemistry. In captivity, conditioning on live foods and a gradual reduction of water hardness typically simulates these cues effectively for related genera.
Breeding
No detailed breeding observations for Lebiasina minuta in captivity have been published in the sources reviewed. Based on the genus and family context, it is likely an egg-scatterer or open substrate spawner that deposits adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, roots, or leaf litter without constructing a nest. Parental care is not expected.
At the small adult size implied by the name and family ecology, clutch sizes are probably modest. Incubation in warm, soft, acidic conditions consistent with blackwater stream environments would be typical. Fry at hatching would be very small and would require appropriately sized first foods such as infusoria and rotifers before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.
Data specific to this species remain sparse. Breeders interested in working with L. minuta should approach husbandry using protocols established for the closely related Lebiasina species and for other soft-water Lebiasinidae, adjusting based on observed behaviour.
In the aquarium
Lebiasina minuta is not an established aquarium species and is rarely, if ever, encountered in the hobby. Its small size and forest-stream origins suggest it would be suitable for a species tank or a carefully selected community with other small, peaceful soft-water fish. A tank that mimics its natural habitat — soft, acidic water (pH 5.0–6.5), low conductivity, warm temperature in the range of 73–79 °F, dim lighting, leaf-litter substrate, and dense marginal planting or root cover — would be the appropriate approach.
If available, L. minuta should be kept in a small group rather than as isolated individuals, as small characoids generally show less stress and more natural behaviour in conspecific company. Its insectivorous diet means it will do best on live and frozen small invertebrate foods; high-quality small-particle prepared foods may be accepted after acclimatisation.
Given its micro-endemic status, any specimens entering the hobby should ideally be from captive-bred sources rather than wild collection. Data on long-term aquarium maintenance are not available in the literature reviewed.
Conservation
Lebiasina minuta has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List as of this writing and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). The absence of a formal assessment does not imply that the species is not of conservation concern — micro-endemics confined to a single drainage in Brazil face the same structural pressures as other restricted-range Neotropical freshwater fish: deforestation within the catchment, agricultural runoff, water extraction, and the cumulative effects of regional land-use change.
Brazil's Atlantic Forest and Amazonian lowland drainages have experienced significant habitat loss, and small freshwater endemics — particularly those known from a single collection point — are among the least buffered against local extinction. A species known only from its original description site has no reserve population to fall back on if the host stream is degraded.
Formal evaluation under IUCN criteria would be a useful conservation step for L. minuta. Until such assessment is completed, the precautionary principle argues for treating any wild collection of the species with care, and for prioritising captive-bred stock should the species become available in the hobby.
