Lebiasina multimaculata is a small, elongate member of the family Lebiasinidae described from Ecuador in 1911 by George Albert Boulenger. Like other species in the genus, it inhabits warm, soft, lowland freshwaters on the Pacific or Atlantic slope of northwestern South America and is rarely encountered in the aquarium hobby, making published biological data sparse. Its name — 'many-spotted' in Latin — announces the fine dark spotting that runs across its flanks and distinguishes it from its plainer congeners.

Taxonomy & naming

Lebiasina multimaculata was described by the Belgian-born ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1911. Boulenger worked at the Natural History Museum in London and described a large number of South American fishes from museum material; the original description of L. multimaculata was based on specimens collected in Ecuador. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for valid names and records Lebiasina multimaculata Boulenger, 1911 as the accepted binomial.

The genus Lebiasina Valenciennes, 1850 belongs to the subfamily Lebiasininae within the family Lebiasinidae, a group that also contains the pencilfish (Nannostomus) and the splash tetras (Copella, Pyrrhulina). Lebiasinids are closely related to the Characidae but form their own family on the basis of molecular and morphological evidence. Within Lebiasininae, Lebiasina is the most speciose genus, comprising roughly a dozen recognised species distributed across the Pacific and Atlantic slope drainages of northern and western South America. The family-level placement in Lebiasinidae is maintained here following current ichthyological consensus; note that some earlier classification schemes assigned these fishes differently.

Morphology

Members of the genus Lebiasina are small to medium-sized, moderately elongate fishes with a rounded, slightly cylindrical body profile — quite unlike the deep-bodied shape of many characids. The specific name multimaculata (Latin: 'many-spotted') refers to the pattern of numerous small dark spots distributed along the flanks, which is the key character distinguishing this species from congeners with plainer or stripe-only patterning.

Detailed meristic data from the original description are not reproduced here. In general body plan, Lebiasina species lack an adipose fin (a character shared across Lebiasinidae) and show relatively large scales for their size. Lebiasina species are generally reported as egg-scatterers with no parental care, following the common lebiasinid pattern, though detailed behavioural documentation is lacking for most species in the genus.

Breeding

For aquarists who do encounter this species, the care requirements would be expected to align with those for related small lebiasinids: warm, soft, slightly acidic water; a well-planted tank with subdued lighting and gentle flow; a diet of small live and frozen invertebrates supplemented with quality prepared foods; and peaceful, similarly sized tankmates. These are reasonable working assumptions, not documented records for L. multimaculata specifically.

Conservation

Lebiasina multimaculata has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List as of the date of this article. The species is known from Ecuador, a country that contains high freshwater biodiversity and faces significant habitat pressures from agriculture, deforestation, and water extraction across its Pacific-slope and upper Amazon drainages. Without a current range assessment or population survey in the literature, it is not possible to characterise the species' conservation status beyond noting that it has not been formally evaluated.

The lack of assessment does not imply security; many narrowly distributed South American fishes remain unevaluated simply because survey effort has not reached them. Given the habitat pressures operating across northwestern South America, and the species' apparently restricted range in Ecuador, monitoring of Lebiasina multimaculata populations would be valuable. Sourcing any specimens from captive-bred stock, should they become available, is the general best practice for small, range-restricted Neotropical fishes.
