Lebiasina ortegai is a small Andean tetra from the Río Cauca drainage of Valle del Cauca, Colombia, known from a single tributary stream and described only in 2008. A member of the family Lebiasinidae — the pencilfish relatives — it is one of several closely related Lebiasina species tucked into the hill-streams and quebradas of the Colombian Andes piedmont. The IUCN assessed it as Least Concern in 2014, a status reflecting its apparent tolerance of the clear, cool highland waters of its home range rather than any abundance data.

Taxonomy & naming

Lebiasina ortegai was described by Ardila Rodríguez in 2008. The type locality is a quebrada (stream) that is a tributary of Río Las Cañas, approximately 200 metres before the Florida–Miranda road in Florida Municipality, Valle del Cauca, Colombia. The holotype is deposited at IMCN under catalogue number 4200. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) confirms the valid name as Lebiasina ortegai Ardila Rodríguez, 2008, placed within the family Lebiasinidae and subfamily Lebiasininae.

The species epithet ortegai is a patronym, presumably honouring a person named Ortega associated with the original description or its fieldwork, though the dedicatee details are not available in the cached sources. The genus Lebiasina was established by Valenciennes (in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1846) and encompasses robust, somewhat elongated lebiasinids distributed through river systems from Panama and Colombia to Peru and Bolivia. Within Lebiasinidae, Lebiasina is one of the more species-rich genera; its members are distinguished from the pencil-fish groups (Nannostomus, Copella) by their larger, less slender body form and more predatory lifestyle.

Feeding

In the aquarium

Lebiasina ortegai is essentially unknown in the ornamental fish trade. The genus Lebiasina appears only sporadically in specialist hobbyist circles, and this species — known from a single locality in the Colombian Andes — is unlikely to appear except through dedicated collection. Aquarists keeping Lebiasina species generally house them in species-specific tanks or with similarly sized and robust companions, as these fish are active and can be predatory toward very small tankmates.

For any Lebiasina, water conditions matching the Andean piedmont origin are advisable: temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, near-neutral to slightly acidic pH, low conductivity, and good oxygenation. Gentle to moderate water movement, shaded areas with plant cover, and a diet of live or frozen invertebrates will keep the fish in good condition. Given the restricted natural range of L. ortegai, any specimens in captivity should be considered ecologically significant and ideally kept in pairs or small groups with breeding attempted.
