Lebiasina panamensis was described by Theodore Gill in 1877, making it one of the earlier named members of its genus. The type locality lies in Panama, and the species epithet directly reflects this — panamensis simply means 'from Panama'. The valid name, as maintained in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Lebiasina panamensis Gill, 1877.
The genus Lebiasina belongs to the family Lebiasinidae, a small but diverse family of characiforms found across Central and South America. Lebiasinids are sometimes grouped informally with the pencilfish family Nannostomidae; together they form a distinct lineage within the broader characiform radiation. Lebiasina is characterised by an elongate body form, a single dorsal fin set well back on the body, and a predilection for shallow, soft-water habitats. L. panamensis sits at the northern periphery of the genus's range and has received limited systematic attention compared with South American congeners.
Morphology
Lebiasina panamensis is an elongate, moderately compressed fish with a pointed snout and a relatively large mouth, consistent with the insectivorous and invertivore-leaning diet typical of the genus. Water chemistry should target the soft, acidic range reflected in its natural habitat — pH 4.5–6.5, hardness below 8 dGH, temperature 73–81 °F (73–81 °F). The species is peaceful toward similarly sized tankmates and can be kept in small groups; conspecific groups of several individuals are preferable to solitary keeping. Vigorous, boisterous tankmates should be avoided. A good live and frozen invertebrate diet is important for long-term health. Given its rarity in captivity and its geographic interest as the northernmost Lebiasina, it merits more attention from specialist breeders than it typically receives.
