Lebiasina panamensis is a small characoid of the family Lebiasinidae found in the blackwater streams and forest tributaries of Panama and adjacent Colombia — the northernmost outpost of a genus that otherwise radiates across tropical South America. A slender, torpedo-shaped fish reaching around 2.5–3 in, it is rarely encountered in the aquarium hobby yet represents an ecologically interesting species: an inhabitant of soft, acidic lowland streams at the interface between Central and South American freshwater faunas.

Taxonomy & naming

Lebiasina panamensis was described by Theodore Gill in 1877, making it one of the earlier named members of its genus. The type locality lies in Panama, and the species epithet directly reflects this — panamensis simply means 'from Panama'. The valid name, as maintained in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Lebiasina panamensis Gill, 1877.

The genus Lebiasina belongs to the family Lebiasinidae, a small but diverse family of characiforms found across Central and South America. Lebiasinids are sometimes grouped informally with the pencilfish family Nannostomidae; together they form a distinct lineage within the broader characiform radiation. Lebiasina is characterised by an elongate body form, a single dorsal fin set well back on the body, and a predilection for shallow, soft-water habitats. L. panamensis sits at the northern periphery of the genus's range and has received limited systematic attention compared with South American congeners.

Morphology

Lebiasina panamensis is an elongate, moderately compressed fish with a pointed snout and a relatively large mouth, consistent with the insectivorous and invertivore-leaning diet typical of the genus. Published size data indicate a standard length of roughly 2.5–3 in for adults, placing it among the smaller members of Lebiasina.

The body colouration in life follows the general lebiasinid pattern: a pale to golden-brown base with a darker lateral stripe or series of markings running from the snout toward the caudal peduncle. The fins are generally plain or lightly pigmented. Feeding

Lebiasina panamensis is primarily insectivorous and invertivorous in the wild, targeting small aquatic invertebrates, zooplankton, and likely terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface in its forested stream habitats. The relatively large mouth and active swimming style are consistent with an active pursuit predator of small prey items rather than a filter or substrate feeder.

In captivity the species will accept small live and frozen foods — Daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm, and small aquatic invertebrates — as well as good-quality micro pellets. A diet weighted toward live or frozen invertebrate material is likely to maintain the fish in best condition and support reproductive behaviour, as is common among insectivorous characiforms.

Mating

Detailed courtship observations for Lebiasina panamensis in the wild are not documented in the available literature, but the species is expected to follow the reproductive pattern characteristic of the Lebiasinidae: egg-scattering spawning without prolonged pair bonding or parental care. Males likely pursue females and spawn over fine-leaved vegetation or among leaf litter and root tangles.

As in other small characiforms of soft acidic streams, spawning readiness is probably tied to seasonal changes in water temperature and level, reflecting the species' natural habitat in streams influenced by wet and dry seasons in lowland Panama and Colombia. Under stable aquarium conditions with appropriate water chemistry, conditioning adults on live foods may stimulate spawning attempts.

Breeding

Lebiasina panamensis is an egg-scattering species that, like other lebiasinids, deposits adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or leaf litter and provides no parental care. Adults will consume their own eggs if given the opportunity, so breeders working with the species should plan to remove spawning substrate or separate adults promptly after spawning.

The species has not been bred frequently in captivity given its rarity in the trade, and detailed accounts of incubation time, fry size, or clutch numbers are sparse. By analogy with related Lebiasina species kept in captivity, soft, warm, slightly acidic water (pH around 5.5–6.5, temperature 77–81 °F / 77–81 °F) with a heavily planted or densely furnished breeding tank is likely to produce the best results. Fry are expected to be small at hatching and would require appropriately fine first foods such as infusoria or commercial liquid fry food before advancing to newly hatched brine shrimp.

In the aquarium

Lebiasina panamensis is seldom available in the mainstream aquarium hobby and is primarily of interest to specialist keepers of small characiforms or to those interested in the freshwater fauna of Panama and the Chocó region. When kept, it is best housed in a soft, acidic, well-filtered aquarium that replicates the shaded stream conditions of its native habitat: subdued lighting, a dark substrate, driftwood, leaf litter, and fine-leaved plants such as Java moss to provide cover and spawning surfaces.

Water chemistry should target the soft, acidic range reflected in its natural habitat — pH 4.5–6.5, hardness below 8 dGH, temperature 73–81 °F (73–81 °F). The species is peaceful toward similarly sized tankmates and can be kept in small groups; conspecific groups of several individuals are preferable to solitary keeping. Vigorous, boisterous tankmates should be avoided. A good live and frozen invertebrate diet is important for long-term health. Given its rarity in captivity and its geographic interest as the northernmost Lebiasina, it merits more attention from specialist breeders than it typically receives.

Conservation

Lebiasina panamensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and is considered Not Evaluated (NE). No dedicated conservation assessment, population survey, or threat analysis for the species is available in the published literature reviewed here.
