Taxonomy & naming
Lebiasina taphorni was described by Carlos A. Ardila Rodríguez in 2004. The species belongs to the genus Lebiasina — the type genus of the family Lebiasinidae — which ranges across northern and western South America from Panama to Peru and through the Guyana Shield. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the valid name as Lebiasina taphorni Ardila Rodríguez, 2004; the authority is not parenthesised because the species was described directly in Lebiasina, where it remains.
Within the order Characiformes, Lebiasinidae is the family of pencilfishes and their relatives. Lebiasina is distinguished from other lebiasinid genera by its moderately compressed body, strong scales, and tricuspid teeth. The genus sits apart from the better-known pencilfish genera (Nannostomus, Nannocharax) in both morphology and ecology, tending toward larger size and more open-water upland habitats rather than the dense-vegetation lowland streams those genera favour.
Morphology
Lebiasina taphorni is a small to moderately sized lebiasinid. Specific size data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature; the genus Lebiasina generally encompasses species ranging from roughly 2–4.5 in standard length, and L. taphorni is presumed to fall within that range. Like other Lebiasina, the body is moderately deep and laterally compressed, with large, well-defined scales and a rounded snout carrying the tricuspid teeth characteristic of the genus.
Colouration follows the typical Lebiasina pattern of a silvery to pale golden ground with darker lateral markings, though precise colour data for this species are not well documented in the sources available. As with most Lebiasinidae, males are likely slimmer-bodied than ripe females, which swell noticeably with eggs before spawning.
Habitat
Lebiasina taphorni is a Guyana Shield endemic. The Guyana Shield is one of the oldest geological formations on Earth, a vast plateau of Precambrian granite and sandstone spanning Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, and adjacent Brazil. The upland streams of this region are typically clear, cool, fast-flowing, and well-oxygenated — very different from the blackwater, slow-moving habitats associated with many other characiform families.
Members of the genus Lebiasina are also recorded from Andean foothills in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, where they occupy comparable swift, clear-water stream environments. The family more broadly spans a range of South American freshwater habitats from shallow vegetated margins to faster upland reaches; L. taphorni's Guyana Shield distribution places it in the latter ecological guild. Water chemistry in these highland streams tends toward slightly acidic to neutral pH and low to moderate hardness.
Feeding
Lebiasina and its relatives are primarily carnivorous, feeding on small aquatic invertebrates such as insect larvae, small crustaceans, and worms. The family Lebiasinidae as a whole takes a variety of small live foods, and the relatively robust teeth of Lebiasina suggest a diet weighted toward harder-bodied prey compared with the smallest pencilfish genera.
In an aquarium setting, family members do well on small live and frozen foods — brine shrimp, bloodworm, mosquito larvae, and Daphnia — and will accept good-quality small dried foods once acclimatised. A diet that includes regular live or frozen invertebrates supports good condition and colour.
Mating
The breeding biology of Lebiasina taphorni specifically has not been described in the sources available. Based on what is known of Lebiasinidae more broadly, Lebiasina species are believed to be egg-scatterers that deposit adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over substrate without subsequent parental care. The genus does not exhibit the elaborate leaf-spawning behaviour seen in Copella and related genera.
Males are likely to display to females and pursue them through vegetation during courtship. As with most small characiforms, spawning is thought to be triggered by favourable water conditions — slight temperature increase, water change, or the onset of simulated rainy-season conditions — and may be repeated in bouts over days.
Breeding
No detailed captive-breeding account for Lebiasina taphorni is available in the literature consulted. The family Lebiasinidae generally presents moderate difficulty in breeding: soft, slightly acidic water (pH 5.7–6.5, hardness 1–5 dH) and a temperature in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius are typically needed to initiate spawning. Eggs of family members tend to hatch within one to four days depending on temperature, and the tiny fry require infusoria or other very fine first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.
Adults will eat eggs, so breeders using fine-leaved plants or spawning mops should remove the spawning medium or parents promptly after egg deposition. Given its Near Threatened status and restricted natural range, any successful captive breeding would be of conservation and hobby interest.
In the aquarium
Lebiasina taphorni is not a commonly kept species, and detailed husbandry data are limited. Based on its ecology and close relatives, it would be expected to do best in a species or genus tank, or with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates. A well-oxygenated, lightly planted aquarium with gentle current — echoing its upland stream origin — would suit it better than a still, heavily planted setup. Water slightly on the acidic side (pH 6.0–7.0) and soft to moderately soft, with temperatures in the 72–79 °F range, is a reasonable starting point.
The family is noted as sensitive to elevated nitrates, so regular partial water changes and efficient mechanical filtration are important. Small live and frozen foods should form the core of the diet. Because the species is rarely traded and little studied in captivity, husbandry notes are largely extrapolated from better-known Lebiasinidae; direct keeper experience with this species would add substantially to what is known.
Conservation
Lebiasina taphorni is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List (2022.2 assessment). The Near Threatened listing reflects the species' restricted range on the Guyana Shield and its vulnerability to the habitat pressures that affect upland stream fishes in that region, including deforestation, agricultural runoff, and small-scale gold mining, which is widespread on the Shield and causes severe sedimentation and mercury contamination of streams.
The species is not widely represented in the aquarium trade, which limits both collecting pressure and the resilience of captive insurance populations. Conservation of Guyana Shield stream habitats more broadly — including protection of forest cover in the catchments of the small highland drainages this species inhabits — is the most meaningful long-term safeguard for L. taphorni and the many other narrow-range endemics that share its environment.
