Taxonomy & naming
Micralestes ambiguus was described by Jacques Géry in 1995. The type locality is the Bari River in Equateur Province, Democratic Republic of Congo, a right-bank tributary of the Ubangui River, itself the largest right-bank tributary of the Congo. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) records the valid name as Micralestes ambiguus Géry, 1995. Because the species was described directly in Micralestes, no parenthetical authority is used.
Micralestes belongs to the tribe Petersiini within the family Alestidae, the African characins (African tetras). The genus was established for small, laterally compressed alestids from the Congo and adjacent river systems and contains a modest number of species. The name ambiguus (Latin: ambiguous, uncertain) reflects uncertainty in the original description — likely regarding the species' placement relative to congeners — rather than any ambiguity about its current validity.
The specific epithet is one of several that Géry applied to problematic or atypical alestids in the course of his long career revising the African characid fauna. M. ambiguus has attracted little subsequent systematic attention and no molecular phylogenetic placement is available in the published literature reviewed here.
Morphology
Micralestes ambiguus is a small, slender characin with a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in. Like other Micralestes, the body is laterally compressed and fusiform, adapted for midwater to near-surface swimming in flowing water. The genus typically shows the alestid plan: a forked caudal fin, a small adipose fin, relatively large eyes, and a small terminal mouth.
Detailed meristic and morphometric data beyond maximum size are sparse in the sources available here. The genus Micralestes is generally distinguished from the larger alestid genera by its small adult size, slender build, and fine dentition. Coloration in life has not been formally documented in the accessible literature; Micralestes species tend toward silvery or translucent bodies with subdued, if any, lateral banding.
Data are insufficient to characterise sexual dimorphism in M. ambiguus specifically, though female alestids are typically deeper-bodied than males when gravid.
Habitat
The type locality of Micralestes ambiguus is the Bari River in the Ubangui basin, Equateur Province, Democratic Republic of Congo. The Ubangui River drains a vast stretch of the Congo basin's northern rim, rising at the confluence of the Uele and Bomu rivers on the DRC–Central African Republic border and flowing westward before joining the Congo near Bangui. The Bari River is a smaller left-bank tributary of this system.
Habitat information specific to M. ambiguus is limited. Contextual data from the Congo River system and alestid ecology more broadly suggest that small Micralestes species inhabit forest streams and moderate-current river sections, often associated with marginal vegetation, submerged root tangles, or the edges of riffles. One source notes that Ubangui-tributary habitat includes fast-flowing river sections. Water chemistry in the Congo basin is typically very soft and acidic, with low conductivity; temperatures in the forested lowland zone of Equateur Province generally fall in the low to mid-20s Celsius year-round.
Feeding

The genus Micralestes is presumed, by analogy with other small alestids in the tribe Petersiini, to be an opportunistic predator of small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and terrestrial arthropods falling onto the water surface.
In the aquarium, small Micralestes species generally accept live and frozen foods such as Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, and fine bloodworm, and can be weaned onto high-quality micro-pellets or crushed flake. Given the paucity of published diet data for this specific species, aquarists should treat published feeding information for congeners as provisional guidance rather than confirmed fact.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour has not been documented in the published literature for Micralestes ambiguus. Based on the general biology of small alestids in the tribe Petersiini, the species is presumed to be an egg-scatterer that deposits adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over substrate in flowing water, with no parental care.
Male Alestidae in general show courtship behaviour involving lateral displays and chasing, with spawning triggered by rainfall-induced changes in water conditions in seasonal systems. Whether M. ambiguus is seasonal in its Ubangui-tributary habitat is unknown. The species has not been reported in the aquarium hobby, so no captive breeding observations are available.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Micralestes ambiguus are known from the sources reviewed here. The species has not been documented in the ornamental fish trade. General alestid breeding biology suggests egg-scattering over vegetation, adhesive eggs, and fry that require small live foods such as infusoria and newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii in the first days after free-swimming.
Data are too sparse to give reliable incubation times, clutch sizes, or rearing protocols for this species. Aquarists who obtain specimens — an unlikely event given their rarity in the trade — should reference husbandry accounts for closely related Micralestes species as a starting point, while treating any extrapolated parameters cautiously.
In the aquarium
Micralestes ambiguus is not established in the ornamental fish hobby and is essentially unavailable in the trade. No dedicated husbandry accounts exist for this species. Any specimens that did become available would be wild-caught from a poorly surveyed locality, and their care would need to be developed from first principles informed by congener husbandry.
Based on the ecology of the Ubangui-basin habitat, a soft, slightly acidic to neutral water chemistry (pH 6.0–7.0) at temperatures of approximately 72–79 °F would be a reasonable starting point. A well-planted aquarium with gentle to moderate flow and subdued lighting would likely suit the species' presumed habitat preferences. As a small schooling characin, M. ambiguus would presumably do best in a group rather than individually.
Conservation
Micralestes ambiguus is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List (2022.2 assessment). The DD listing reflects the absence of sufficient distributional and population data to assign a threat category — not necessarily that the species is secure. The Bari River and Ubangui basin within the DRC's Equateur Province are subject to the broader pressures affecting Congo basin ichthyofauna, including artisanal fishing, forest clearance, and agricultural expansion, though direct threat data for this species are unavailable.
The Congo River basin as a whole is one of the most species-rich freshwater systems on Earth and remains comparatively under-surveyed relative to its diversity. Many small, range-restricted alestids from its tributary systems have been described from few specimens and have not been re-collected since. Renewed field surveys of the Ubangui drainage would be necessary to assess the true population status of M. ambiguus and to support an informed IUCN threat-category assignment.
