Micralestes congicus was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1967, in his comprehensive revision of the dwarf African characids published as 'Révision des Characidae nains africains' in the Annales du Musée Royal de l'Afrique Centrale. The type locality is the Ruki River, a major left-bank tributary of the middle Congo River in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) records the valid name as Micralestes congicus Poll, 1967.
The genus Micralestes belongs to the subfamily Alestiinae within the family Alestidae, the African tetras. Alestidae is the Old World counterpart to the New World Characidae, sharing the characin body plan while occupying the river systems of tropical Africa. Micralestes species are among the smallest alestids; they are characterised by their slender, laterally compressed form, large eyes, and schooling behaviour in open and pelagic zones of rivers and streams. The specific epithet congicus is a Latinised adjective referring to the Congo River system, the region from which the type material was taken.
Morphology
Micralestes congicus is a small, slender fish reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2.5 in. Like other members of the genus, it has the characteristic alestid body plan: laterally compressed, with a relatively deep but narrow profile, large eyes suited to the turbid or low-light conditions of central African river channels, and a forked tail fin suited to sustained pelagic swimming.
Fin counts and precise meristic data from the original description are not widely reproduced in accessible secondary literature; the species is one of many central African small characids that remain insufficiently documented in comparison to their West African and East African relatives. Coloration in life is not well described in the hobbyist literature, though Micralestes species in general tend toward a silvery or pale-gold body with a lateral stripe or iridescent sheen and a dark caudal spot or band. Sexual dimorphism, if present, follows the general pattern of the genus: males may be slimmer-bodied than ripe females.
Habitat
Micralestes congicus is endemic to the Ruki River drainage, a major left-bank tributary system entering the Congo River in the middle basin of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Ruki and its tributaries drain a region of lowland tropical rainforest, producing slow-moving, dark-stained, and often turbid waters over sandy and muddy substrates with abundant aquatic and marginal vegetation. FishBase classifies the species as freshwater and pelagic, consistent with the open-water, mid-column habits typical of schooling Micralestes.
Water conditions across the Ruki drainage and the broader middle Congo basin are characterised by warm tropical temperatures, with related species in the same system recorded across a range of roughly 73–79 °F. Feeding

Occasional specimens might reach specialist importers handling wild-caught central African fish, but it is not a traded or cultured species to any known extent. The information available for aquarium maintenance is therefore largely extrapolated from the genus and from the general care principles for small African characids from the Congo basin.
A species of this type would require soft to moderately soft, slightly acidic to neutral water in the range of 73–79 °F, a well-planted or otherwise enriched aquarium with subdued lighting and gentle filtration, and a diet of small live or frozen invertebrates supplemented by fine prepared foods. Being a pelagic schooling fish, it would need to be kept in a group of six or more to display natural behaviour. Given its restricted wild range and the general sensitivity of central African stream fishes, careful attention to water quality would be essential.
Conservation
Micralestes congicus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, based on an evaluation completed in February 2009. The assessment reflects the species' occurrence across the Ruki River drainage of the middle Congo basin and the absence of identified major threats sufficient to trigger a higher threat category. FishBase records low fishing vulnerability (10 on a scale of 100), consistent with a small pelagic species of limited commercial interest.
The Congo basin as a whole faces ongoing pressures from deforestation, agricultural conversion, artisanal mining, and increasing human population density, all of which affect water quality and riparian habitat in tributary systems including the Ruki. However, the basin's vast scale and the species' pelagic habits in a large river system provide some buffer against local disturbance.
