Its common name refers to the gleaming silver lateral stripe that runs the length of the body — argyrotaenia, from the Greek for silver band — giving shoaling groups a mirror-flash quality in open water. Although lightly documented in aquarium literature, the species typifies the genus Micralestes: a fast-moving, surface-oriented schooling fish of streams and rivers with good current.

Taxonomy & naming

Micralestes argyrotaenia was described by Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1936. The genus Micralestes Boulenger, 1899 belongs to the family Alestidae, the African tetras, a predominantly African radiation that includes familiar aquarium fish such as the Congo tetra (Phenacogrammus interruptus) and the larger tiger fish (Hydrocynus spp.). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & van der Laan) records Micralestes argyrotaenia Trewavas, 1936 as the valid name; no subsequent synonymy has displaced it.

Within Alestidae, Micralestes is a genus of small, slender species united by modest size, a pronounced lateral band, and a schooling lifestyle in flowing water. The genus has attracted relatively little systematic revision compared with commercially important alestids, and interspecific boundaries within Micralestes remain incompletely resolved. M. argyrotaenia is distinguished within the genus primarily by its silvery lateral stripe and body proportions, though detailed meristic comparisons are required for confident field identification.

As a small, schooling alestid it would be best maintained in a group of eight or more in a spacious tank with open swimming space and moderate current, replicating the flowing-water environment of its native rivers. Soft to neutral water with a temperature in the mid-20s Celsius would suit the species well.

The silver lateral stripe is most effective when the fish are relaxed and well-lit, and the group's natural shoaling behaviour is the principal appeal. Compatible tankmates would include other small, peaceful rheophilic species from West or Central Africa. Overall data on captive husbandry are sparse, and aquarists wishing to work with the species should consult specialist ichthyological contacts or importers with direct access to the original collection range.

Conservation

Micralestes argyrotaenia has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no published conservation status. The species is presumably widespread within the Congo Basin and associated West African river systems, and no specific population-level threats have been documented in the accessible literature. However, river systems across its range face ongoing pressure from agricultural runoff, small-scale mining, and watershed degradation.
