Micralestes elongatus is a small alestid tetra endemic to Lake Turkana in northern Kenya — one of the few characiform fishes confined to that vast, alkaline Rift Valley lake. Micralestes is a genus of small African tetras in the family Alestidae, the African characins. Habitat

Lake Turkana is the world's largest permanent desert lake and the largest alkaline lake; its waters are characterised by elevated pH (typically 9–10.5), high conductivity, and relatively warm temperatures given the arid Turkana basin climate.

The lake supports a surprisingly rich endemic ichthyofauna, including several Nile perch relatives and numerous cichlids, alongside a smaller complement of characiforms. M. elongatus occupies the tropical freshwater zone of the lake as recorded by FishBase, likely in marginal or open-water littoral habitats, though precise microhabitat data are not available in the accessible literature. Its peaceful, schooling alestid temperament can be assumed from generic family biology; it would likely do best in a conspecific group or alongside similarly sized, alkaline-tolerant species.
