Taxonomy & naming
Micralestes lualabae was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1967, with the type locality given as the Lualaba River in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Lualaba is the upper and middle reach of the Congo River system, and the species' name refers directly to this locality, using the Latin adjectival suffix -ae to form a toponym. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid name, which has remained stable in Micralestes since its original description.
The genus Micralestes belongs to the family Alestidae, the African tetras, a group centred on sub-Saharan Africa and distantly related to the South American Characidae. Within Alestidae, Micralestes comprises small, schooling species typically under 4 in distributed across Congo and surrounding drainages. A peer-reviewed taxonomic revision of Micralestes in the lower Congo River, published in Zootaxa in 2007, provided a species identification key and examined diagnostic characters that separate M. lualabae from close relatives; that treatment and FishBase records confirm the species' placement and distribution.
Morphology
Micralestes lualabae is a small, elongate alestid reaching a reported maximum of 3.5 in total length. Like other members of the genus it has the streamlined, laterally compressed body plan typical of schooling, open-water tetras: a moderate head, a well-forked caudal fin, and a single dorsal fin. The adipose fin, characteristic of characiform fishes, is present.

As an active mid-water schooler it needs room to move; a tank of at least 31.5–39.5 in in length would suit a small group. Compatible tankmates include other small, peaceful Congo-basin species — dwarf cichlids such as Nanochromis or Steatocranus, other small alestids, and small West African barbs. Given its scarcity in the trade, captive specimens should be assumed to be wild-caught and given time to acclimate with careful attention to water quality and initial feeding.
