Taxonomy & naming
Micralestes pabrensis was originally described by A.R. Roman in 1966 under the name Phenacogrammus pabrensis, with the type locality given as Pabré Reservoir in the White Volta basin, approximately 14 mi northeast of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The holotype is catalogued as MRAC 141261. The species was subsequently transferred to the genus Micralestes, where it now sits as the valid combination Micralestes pabrensis (Roman, 1966); the parenthetical authority reflects the change of genus since the original description. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) is the governing authority for this name.
The genus Micralestes belongs to the family Alestidae, the African characids, a predominantly West and Central African radiation of small to medium-sized characiform fishes. Within Alestidae, Micralestes comprises a group of slender, pelagic-leaning species widely distributed across sub-Saharan African river systems. M. pabrensis is one of the smaller members of the genus and is distinguished in part by sexual dimorphism of the anal fin in adult males, a character noted in the FishBase record.
Morphology
Micralestes pabrensis is a small, fusiform characid reaching a maximum total length of 2 in.
