Micralestes vittatus is a small African tetra of the family Alestidae, confined to a handful of waterways draining into or out of Lake Tanganyika — the Lufuko River at Mpala and the Lukuga River, the lake's only outflow. Reaching about 3.5 in standard length and occupying the open, pelagic zone, it is a dietary generalist that takes aquatic insects, plant material, and algae. The species is rarely encountered in the aquarium hobby and remains poorly documented, though its association with the broadly intact Tanganyika system lends it a degree of resilience unusual among narrowly distributed African tetras.

Taxonomy & naming

Micralestes vittatus was originally described as Alestes vittatus by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1917, based on material from the Lake Tanganyika drainage. The species was subsequently transferred to the genus Micralestes, a revision reflected in the parenthetical authority (Boulenger, 1917) used today. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) is the governing authority for the valid name.

Micralestes is a genus of small alestid tetras distributed across sub-Saharan Africa, separated from the larger Alestes and related genera on morphological grounds including body depth and scale counts. M. vittatus sits within this broadly African-river radiation. The species has generated little modern systematic attention, and its relationships within Micralestes have not been resolved with molecular data as of the time of writing.

The specific epithet vittatus is Latin for 'banded' or 'striped', describing a lateral body marking, a common descriptor in Alestidae. No widely recognised common name is in use in the hobbyist literature or the major taxonomic databases.

Morphology

Micralestes vittatus reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 3.5 in, placing it among the larger members of its genus. Body depth is relatively shallow, reported as 3.35–3.6 times the standard length, giving the fish a more elongate, fusiform profile than many of the deeper-bodied alestids — a shape consistent with a pelagic, open-water lifestyle.

Like other Micralestes, it is a laterally compressed, silvery fish with a prominent lateral stripe or band from which the specific epithet derives. Detailed descriptions of scale counts, fin-ray formulae, and colour pattern are not well documented in freely available literature, and the species has not been subject to a modern morphological redescription. Scale arrangement, a deeply forked caudal fin, and the characteristic large eye of small pelagic tetras are typical of the genus.

Sexual dimorphism, if present, has not been formally described in the published literature. As in many small alestids, ripe females may show a slightly fuller abdomen during the breeding season.

Habitat

Micralestes vittatus is endemic to the Lake Tanganyika drainage basin. Its known range encompasses the Lufuko River at Mpala in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Lukuga River, the sole surface outflow of Lake Tanganyika, which flows westward to join the Lualaba River. Both localities sit within the broader Congo Basin hydrological network, and the species has been classified as a freshwater, pelagic, tropical fish.

The Lukuga River drains the excess water of Lake Tanganyika and varies considerably in flow with lake level, a hydrological feature that creates fluctuating conditions in the lower reaches. The Lufuko enters Tanganyika near Mpala on the western shore. Water temperatures throughout the Tanganyika basin at these elevations are warm year-round, broadly consistent with the tropical regime of the central Congo watershed. Specific substrate or microhabitat preferences within these rivers have not been characterised in the published record.

Feeding

Mating

No published account of courtship behaviour in Micralestes vittatus is available in the accessible literature. Micralestes vittatus is not an established aquarium fish and is essentially absent from the hobbyist trade. General guidance for small African tetras of the family Alestidae would apply: a well-maintained freshwater aquarium at tropical temperatures, neutral to slightly alkaline water chemistry reflecting the Congo-basin habitat, and a peaceful community setting with similarly sized tankmates.

Its pelagic, open-water ecology suggests that, like many small alestids, it would do best as a schooling fish in a spacious aquarium with ample swimming room rather than a densely planted, low-flow biotope. Diet in captivity would likely follow the omnivorous pattern seen in gut analyses: small invertebrate foods (live or frozen insect larvae, small crustaceans) supplemented with vegetable matter and good-quality prepared food. Given the near-total absence of captive experience, all aquarium notes for this species are provisional.

Conservation

The IUCN status of Micralestes vittatus is reported as Least Concern (LC) in FishBase, attributed to an assessment circa 2013, based on high resilience and a minimum population doubling time under 15 months and low vulnerability to fishing. However, there is a conflict in the available data: a more recent IUCN assessment listed in Wikidata as of the 2022.2 Red List catalogue records the species as Data Deficient (DD), suggesting the earlier LC assessment may have been superseded.
