Taxonomy & naming
Mimagoniates lateralis was described by Nichols in 1913, and the parenthetical authority reflects its transfer to the current genus from an earlier placement. It belongs to the subfamily Stevardiinae (within the family Characidae) and to the tribe Glandulocaudini — a group of small South American characids notable for their caudal gland in males, which is thought to disperse chemical signals during spawning aggregations.
The genus Mimagoniates was erected to accommodate a cluster of small, laterally compressed, blackwater characids from Atlantic-drainage streams of southern Brazil and adjacent Argentina. All members are sometimes called 'croaking tetras' for the low clicking or croaking sounds males produce; the mechanism involves modified swim-bladder musculature, though the precise anatomy varies among species. Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Mimagoniates lateralis (Nichols, 1913). Its closest congeners include Mimagoniates microlepis and Mimagoniates inequalis, all sharing the Atlantic-drainage blackwater habitat.
Morphology
Mimagoniates lateralis is a small, slender characid reaching approximately 1.5 in standard length. The body is laterally compressed, with a somewhat elongated, torpedo-like profile typical of the genus. The flanks carry an iridescent blue-green to steel-blue lateral stripe that catches light against the otherwise silvery or pale-yellowish body, giving rise to the 'blue' in its common name.
Males are distinguished by the caudal gland — a visible, pale organ at the base of the lower lobe of the caudal fin — which females lack or carry in reduced form. The fins are generally clear to faintly pigmented. Sexual dimorphism is subtle in overall size but more apparent in the caudal gland and in the intensity of the lateral iridescence, which becomes particularly vivid in courting males. Like other glandulocaudins, the adipose fin is present and the mouth is small and upturned, suited for surface and near-surface feeding.
Habitat
In the wild, Mimagoniates lateralis inhabits coastal blackwater streams and small rivers draining the Atlantic Forest biome in the states of Paraná and São Paulo, Brazil. These are typically clear-to-dark, tannin-stained watercourses running through or alongside dense riparian forest, with soft, acidic water, leaf-litter substrates, and abundant submerged or overhanging vegetation.
The species is associated with shallow, slow-to-moderate current zones — sheltered backwaters, stream margins, and pools beneath forest canopy — where it schools in midwater and at the surface. Like many Atlantic Forest stream fishes, it is strongly tied to forest cover: intact riparian margins moderate water temperature, maintain low conductivity, and supply the leaf litter and invertebrate inputs that sustain the food web. Water temperatures in these coastal hill streams are seasonally variable and often cooler than hobbyists might expect — typically in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius.
Feeding
Mimagoniates lateralis is a small-mouthed surface and mid-water predator of invertebrates. The natural diet consists primarily of small insects, aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and other tiny invertebrates encountered at and just below the water surface, supplemented by zooplankton and whatever organic matter drifts through the water column.
In the aquarium the species accepts a range of small-particle foods: micro-pellets, finely crushed flake, and frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, Cyclops, and Grindal worms. Live and frozen foods are particularly important for conditioning breeding fish and for eliciting full colour in males. The small mouth size should be kept in mind when selecting food particles — oversized foods are ignored or spat out.
Mating
Courtship in Mimagoniates lateralis is conspicuously acoustic: males produce clicking sounds, generated via modified swim-bladder musculature, that are directed at females and rival males. This is among the clearest examples of sound production in the Characidae and is the basis for the 'croaking tetra' vernacular. Males also display intensified iridescent colouration and fin-spreading during courtship, and the caudal gland is believed to release pheromones that further coordinate spawning.
The species is an egg-scatterer that spawns among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or at the water's surface film. Spawning activity tends to concentrate during dawn hours and is most readily triggered by stable, slightly cool, soft and acidic water conditions that mirror the species' blackwater stream origins. Males compete actively for access to receptive females, and groups that include multiple males show the fullest display behaviour.
Breeding
Mimagoniates lateralis is bred in captivity, though it is less commonly encountered in the hobby than some other small tetras and requires somewhat specific conditions to spawn readily. A breeding setup with soft, slightly acidic water in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, dense fine-leaved plants (Java moss, Taxiphyllum, or synthetic mops), and dim lighting encourages spawning. A gentle air-driven sponge filter provides circulation without strong current.
The eggs are small, adhesive, and scattered among vegetation; adults do not provide parental care and will consume eggs if given the opportunity. Breeders typically remove adults after spawning is observed, or harvest the spawning medium to a separate rearing vessel. Eggs hatch in a few days at breeding temperature. The tiny fry require infusoria or other very fine first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Growth is gradual and the acoustic and visual courtship behaviour of males develops as they mature.
In the aquarium
Mimagoniates lateralis is best kept as a small school of six or more individuals in a quiet aquarium that reflects its blackwater stream origins: soft, acidic to neutral water, peat filtration or dried leaf litter to introduce tannins, subdued lighting, and dense fine-leaved planting with open midwater swimming space. Water temperature in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius suits the species well; it is more cold-tolerant than many tropical tetras but should not be kept too warm, as this stresses fish from seasonally cool stream habitats.
Because the males are acoustic and active courters, a mixed-sex group in a calm, well-planted tank yields the most natural behaviour and the fullest display of the lateral iridescence. The species is peaceful and suitable for a community with other small, quiet fish of comparable water-parameter needs — nano fish, small rasboras, pygmy corydoras, and other soft-water tetras. Avoid boisterous or fin-nipping tankmates. Water quality must be maintained carefully as Mimagoniates is sensitive to deterioration; small, regular water changes with dechlorinated, soft water are preferable to large, infrequent changes. Overall difficulty is moderate — the species rewards attention to water chemistry and temperature but is hardy under appropriate conditions.
Conservation
Mimagoniates lateralis is listed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, assessed under criteria B2b(iii) in November 2018. The Near Threatened status reflects ongoing habitat loss within the Atlantic Forest biome: the coastal streams of Paraná and São Paulo that the species depends on are subject to riparian deforestation, water abstraction, agricultural runoff, and the expansion of urban and suburban development along the Brazilian coast.
The Atlantic Forest is one of the most species-rich and most severely reduced biomes on Earth, and freshwater fishes endemic to its drainage systems face persistent pressure even where they are not yet formally Threatened. M. lateralis is not currently used heavily in the ornamental trade and most aquarium specimens are captive-bred, reducing wild-collection pressure. Protecting and restoring riparian forest along the small coastal streams of Paraná and São Paulo remains the most important long-term conservation measure for this and many co-occurring Atlantic Forest stream fishes.
