Mimagoniates rheocharis was described by Naercio Aquino Menezes and Stanley H. Weitzman in 1990. The species belongs to the genus Mimagoniates Regan, 1907, placed within the tribe Glandulocaudini of the family Characidae. Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Mimagoniates rheocharis Menezes & Weitzman, 1990.
Mimagoniates is a small genus of Brazilian characids whose members share the tribe Glandulocaudini's most remarkable biological peculiarity: internal insemination, in which sperm are transferred to the female and stored in the ovarian lumen prior to fertilisation. This places the genus among a handful of characid lineages that have independently evolved internal fertilisation, and it has drawn disproportionate research attention relative to the group's modest size and limited distribution. The genus name Mimagoniates combines the prefix mim- (mimicking or resembling) with Agoniates, a related genus, reflecting superficial similarities between them.
Morphology
Mimagoniates rheocharis is a slender, laterally compressed small characid reaching a maximum of 2 in standard length. The body shape is elongate and streamlined, consistent with life in moderately to strongly flowing water — a contrast with the deeper-bodied form typical of many small tetras from still or sluggish environments.
As is common in Glandulocaudini, there is marked sexual dimorphism. Males bear a caudal gland on the ventral surface of the caudal peduncle, which is believed to play a role in chemical communication and courtship. Detailed external colour pattern notes are sparse in publicly available sources for this species, but the genus generally shows a silvery ground colour with an iridescent lateral stripe and, in displaying males, heightened fin pigmentation.
Habitat
The species is endemic to coastal stream systems in a narrow geographic band running from southeastern Santa Catarina south into northeastern Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil — a section of the Atlantic Forest associated with the Serra Geral geological formation. Within this range it occupies small to moderate streams with moderate current, transparent water, and substrates of stone and leaf litter.
This is Atlantic Forest headwater habitat: cool, clear, and typically running through heavily vegetated catchments. Recorded water temperatures of 66–75 °F reflect the montane and submontane origin of these drainages, which are notably cooler than the lowland coastal rivers a short distance away. The combination of restricted geographic range and dependence on intact forested catchment makes the species highly sensitive to land-use change.
Feeding
Mimagoniates rheocharis is carnivorous. In its natural stream environment it feeds on small invertebrates available in the water column and at the surface, including insect larvae and other small arthropods drifting in the current or entering the water from streamside vegetation.
In captivity the species will accept fine live and frozen invertebrate foods such as Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, small bloodworm, and Cyclops. Given its stream origins and active, mid-to-surface swimming style, it is well suited to catching small free-swimming prey items rather than bottom-scavenging.
Mating
Mimagoniates rheocharis departs sharply from the egg-scattering norm of most small characids. As a glandulocaudine, the species uses internal insemination: males transfer sperm packets to females, which are retained in the ovarian lumen where they remain viable for months. The male's caudal gland is presumed to contribute chemical signals that coordinate courtship and sperm transfer, though the full behavioural repertoire has not been described in detail in accessible literature.
The result of sperm storage is that females are capable of fertilising successive batches of eggs without repeated mating. Reproductive activity extends over a long period, with peak output reported in colder months — consistent with the species' cool-water, seasonally variable habitat. Fecundity is low relative to most characids: females allocate less energy to oocyte production, an apparent trade-off associated with the energetic overhead of the internal insemination system.
Breeding
Breeding observations in captivity are limited, but the internal insemination biology shapes expectations significantly. Because females store sperm, a well-conditioned female that has been with males may spawn independently of a male being present at the time. Egg deposition is thought to occur among fine-leaved vegetation or other suitable structure, and fecundity per batch is low.
There is no parental care. Given the cool native temperature range of 66–75 °F, breeding attempts in captivity should use similarly cool, clean water rather than the warmer conditions commonly used for tropical tetras. The combination of low fecundity and cool-water requirements makes this a more demanding and specialist breeding project than most characids, and detailed husbandry accounts are rare in hobby literature.
In the aquarium
Mimagoniates rheocharis is seldom traded and is primarily of interest to characid specialists and keepers focused on Atlantic Forest stream species. Its requirements differ meaningfully from those of the most widely kept small tetras: it needs cooler water in the 66–75 °F range, good oxygenation, and moderate current — conditions that more closely resemble a temperate stream than a tropical aquarium.
A biotope-style setup with a sandy or fine-gravel substrate, smooth stones, leaf litter, and riparian plant cover suits the species well. Filtration should provide a gentle but perceptible flow. The fish are active and occupy mid-water to the surface, and they benefit from being kept in a small group where the social dynamics of the glandulocaudine mating system can express naturally. Tankmates, if any, should share the cool-water preference and not outcompete the fish at feeding.
Conservation
The IUCN assessed Mimagoniates rheocharis as Near Threatened (NT) under criterion B1b(iii) in November 2018. The designation reflects the species' endemic status within the Atlantic Forest Serra Geral formation in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, combined with continuing decline in habitat quality. Primary threats are habitat degradation and water pollution arising from agricultural expansion, silviculture, and urban development in the coastal Atlantic Forest zone — one of the world's most threatened biodiversity hotspots.
The Atlantic Forest has been reduced to a small fraction of its original extent, and the headwater streams that Mimagoniates rheocharis depends upon are particularly vulnerable to riparian clearance and associated sedimentation and chemical contamination. The species' narrow geographic range and reliance on intact, forested catchments leave it with little buffer against continued land-use pressure. No species-specific conservation programme is documented in available sources, and it does not appear to be established in captive collections in numbers sufficient to constitute a meaningful insurance population.
