Mimagoniates pulcher is a slender, jewel-toned characid from the Atlantic Forest coastal streams of southeastern Brazil, distinguished within its genus by an exceptionally vivid iridescent lateral stripe and the ornate finnage of breeding males. Like its close relatives in Mimagoniates, it belongs to the glandulocaudine tribe — a group of characids remarkable for internal fertilisation and the production of adhesive, spermatophore-bearing eggs, a reproductive strategy almost unique among tetras.

Taxonomy & naming

Mimagoniates pulcher was formally described by Naércio Aquino Menezes and Stanley Howard Weitzman in 2009, as part of a revision of the genus Mimagoniates. The valid name as given in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Mimagoniates pulcher Menezes & Weitzman, 2009.

The genus Mimagoniates belongs to the subfamily Stevardiinae (historically placed in the tribe Glandulocaudini) within the family Characidae. Glandulocaudine tetras are defined principally by their unique reproductive biology — internal fertilisation via spermatophores transferred to the female during courtship — rather than by a suite of morphological synapomorphies, making the group especially interesting from an evolutionary standpoint. Mimagoniates itself contains a cluster of small, laterally compressed, stream-dwelling species distributed along the Atlantic Forest coast of Brazil and into neighbouring Paraguay and Argentina, all broadly similar in build but differing in colour pattern and caudal gland structure.

Morphology

Mimagoniates pulcher is a small, slender, laterally compressed tetra reaching approximately 1.5 in in standard length. The body plan is typical for the genus: an elongated fusiform profile, a relatively large eye, and a delicate, almost transparent quality to the flanks that allows the musculature to show through.

The species' specific epithet, pulcher (Latin: beautiful), refers to the striking lateral colour pattern. A bright, iridescent blue to blue-green stripe runs the length of the body from behind the operculum to the caudal peduncle, contrasting against a silvery or pale golden ground colour. Males develop elongated caudal and anal fin rays during the breeding season as part of a caudal gland complex used in courtship signalling — a characteristic shared across glandulocaudine tetras, though the exact form of fin ornamentation varies among species. Females are plainer, lacking the fin extensions and showing a slightly more robust body when gravid.

Habitat

Mimagoniates pulcher inhabits small, shallow streams and creeks within the Atlantic Forest biome of southeastern Brazil. Atlantic Forest stream habitats are typically soft, acidic, and stained with tannins from leaf litter and decaying organic matter. Canopy cover is dense, moderately reducing insolation and keeping water temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius.

The species is associated with relatively clear, slow-moving to still marginal water — areas near overhanging bankside vegetation, leaf-litter accumulations, and aquatic plants where cover is abundant. Like other members of the genus, it is not a fish of fast, exposed riffle habitats. The Atlantic Forest itself is one of the most biodiverse and most threatened biomes on earth, reduced to roughly 12–15 percent of its original extent, which gives a direct ecological context to the restricted ranges of the many endemic fishes it harbours.

Feeding

Mimagoniates pulcher is an insectivore and micropredator. In the wild it takes small invertebrates from the water surface and water column — insects, insect larvae, small crustaceans, and zooplankton — making use of the high productivity of leaf-litter-rich Atlantic Forest streams.

In the aquarium it accepts a varied diet readily: high-quality micro-pellets and small flakes form a workable base, supplemented with small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, Cyclops, micro-worms, and baby brine shrimp. Live and frozen foods are especially beneficial for conditioning fish for breeding, eliciting the full colour and triggering courtship behaviour. The fish feeds primarily in the upper and middle water column.

Mating

The mating biology of Mimagoniates pulcher follows the glandulocaudine pattern of internal fertilisation, which sets the genus apart from the vast majority of egg-scattering tetras. Males possess a caudal gland on the caudal peduncle — a specialised structure that produces secretions used in courtship — and develop elongated fin rays that are waved and displayed during courtship to direct the female's attention toward the gland.

Courtship involves the male orienting beside or slightly ahead of the female and vibrating, flaring the ornate caudal and anal fins, and releasing attractant pheromones or contact chemicals from the caudal gland. Fertilisation is internal: sperm are packaged as spermatophores and transferred to the female. The female retains the sperm and can fertilise eggs over an extended period, a notable departure from the simple broadcast-spawning strategy of most characids.

Breeding

Following internal fertilisation, females of Mimagoniates pulcher deposit small numbers of adhesive eggs onto fine-leaved plants or other suitable substrate. Egg production is low by tetra standards — a consequence of the more complex, energy-intensive reproductive strategy — but the adhesive eggs with their pre-packaged fertilisation capacity represent a different evolutionary bet than mass egg-scattering.

The eggs hatch after several days depending on temperature, and the fry are small but not as minute as those of some egg-scattering species. Adults do not provide parental care and will consume eggs and fry if not separated. Captive breeding has been achieved, though Mimagoniates species are not widely bred in the hobby and detailed reports are sparse. Conditioning pairs or small groups on live and frozen foods in a well-planted tank with soft, acidic water is the standard approach.

In the aquarium

Mimagoniates pulcher is an uncommon but rewarding aquarium fish, best suited to a specialist keeper with experience of small, soft-water South American characids. It is a peaceful, active species that does best in small groups of six or more, where social interactions and male competition for females bring out the courtship displays and fullest colour. A species tank or a biotope setup with other small, soft-water Atlantic Forest fishes is ideal.

Water chemistry should reflect the species' natural habitat: soft, acidic, tannin-stained water in the range of pH 5.5–7.0 with low conductivity and temperatures of approximately 72–79 °F. Dim lighting, dense planting with fine-leaved species and floating plants, and a substrate of sand and leaf litter create conditions that reduce stress and encourage natural behaviour. Filtration should produce gentle flow; the fish is not adapted to fast current. It is not commercially common, and obtaining stock may require specialist dealers or hobbyist networks. Wild-collected fish should be quarantined carefully.

Conservation

Mimagoniates pulcher has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no current global conservation status. The species is endemic to Atlantic Forest stream systems in southeastern Brazil, a biome that has suffered severe and ongoing deforestation, agricultural expansion, and urban development, with less than 15 percent of original forest cover remaining.

The narrow endemic range typical of Atlantic Forest stream fishes — often a single river basin or cluster of microhabitats — makes species like M. pulcher inherently vulnerable to local disturbance, even without a formal threat assessment. Pollution, sedimentation from deforestation, and catchment modification all degrade the clear, shaded stream habitat the species depends on. Until a dedicated assessment is carried out, the lack of an IUCN status should not be read as an indication that populations are secure. Hobbyists keeping this species should source captive-bred stock where available and maintain breeding groups to build an ex-situ reservoir.
