Taxonomy & naming

Mimagoniates sylvicola was described by Naércio A. Menezes and Stanley H. Weitzman in 1990. The species belongs to the genus Mimagoniates, a member of the glandulocaudine subtribe within the family Characidae. Glandulocaudines are characterised by the presence of a caudal gland — a complex of secretory tissue associated with modified scales on the lower lobe of the caudal fin — that males use to disperse sex pheromones during courtship. Mimagoniates is one of the larger glandulocaudine genera and encompasses a series of small, slender Brazilian forest-stream tetras.

Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name Mimagoniates sylvicola Menezes & Weitzman, 1990. The specific epithet sylvicola derives from Latin and means 'forest dweller' — a reference to the species' association with forested stream habitats. FishBase lists the species under the broader family Characidae. No subspecies are recognised.

Morphology

Mimagoniates sylvicola is a small, slender-bodied characid reaching approximately 1 in standard length, making it one of the smaller members of its genus. The body is laterally compressed and elongate, the typical form for a shoaling mid-water fish of small forest streams. Coloration is relatively subdued: a pale silvery to yellowish body with a faint bluish or greenish iridescent sheen along the flanks under appropriate lighting, and a suggestion of a darker lateral band.

As in all male glandulocaudines, males of M. sylvicola bear the characteristic caudal gland structure on the lower caudal-fin lobe, which appears as a slightly thickened or differentiated region of modified scales. This structure is absent or rudimentary in females. Males are also typically more slender and may show slightly more intense iridescence than females, though marked sexual dichromatism of the kind seen in larger characids is not a feature of the species. Data on detailed meristic counts for this species are sparse in the accessible literature.

Habitat

Mimagoniates sylvicola is endemic to Brazil, where it occurs in clear, small forest streams within the Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica) biome. The Atlantic Forest is a globally threatened biodiversity hotspot, and many of its endemic stream fishes occupy highly restricted ranges within individual drainage basins. The species is associated with shaded, clear-water streams with good oxygen levels, typically flowing over sand, gravel, or leaf-litter substrates under dense riparian canopy.

Water conditions in Atlantic Forest streams of this type are generally soft and slightly acidic to neutral, with low conductivity reflecting the largely non-calcareous catchments. Temperature in upland and coastal-slope forest streams varies seasonally but typically falls within the warm-to-moderate range suitable for tropical characids. Precise locality data for M. sylvicola beyond its Brazilian endemism are sparse in the available literature.

Feeding

Mimagoniates sylvicola is presumed to be a generalist micro-predator in the manner typical of small glandulocaudine tetras. In the wild, species of this group feed primarily on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — micro-crustaceans, insect larvae, small flying insects taken from the water surface, and other zooplankton-sized prey available in shaded forest streams.

In the aquarium, M. sylvicola accepts small prepared foods including micro-pellets and finely crushed flake, but thrives best when offered a variety that includes live or frozen small invertebrates: Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, Cyclops, and similar fare. As a small-mouthed species, food particle size matters — items should not exceed approximately half the fish's head width. A live-food-enriched diet improves condition and is generally recommended for bringing glandulocaudines into breeding readiness.

Mating

Glandulocaudine tetras including Mimagoniates are well known for a distinctive pheromone-mediated courtship system. Males disperse chemical signals from the caudal gland by swimming ahead of females, fanning pheromone-laden secretions towards them with the modified caudal-fin lobe. This behaviour is the defining reproductive characteristic of the group and sets glandulocaudines apart from most other characids, which rely primarily on visual or tactile courtship cues.

Courtship in Mimagoniates species typically involves persistent male pursuit and repeated bouts of pheromone fanning. The behaviour is often most active in the early morning. Females appear to use the chemical signals to assess male quality before consenting to spawn. In aquarium conditions, maintaining a group with multiple males promotes active display and courtship; subdominant males also court, though dominant males suppress competitors through persistent shadowing.

Breeding

Mimagoniates sylvicola, like other members of its genus, is an egg-scattering open spawner that deposits adhesive eggs among fine-leaved vegetation or other dense plant material, with no parental care. Eggs are small and adhere to plant leaves, moss, or spawning mops by short filaments. Adults will readily consume their own eggs and should be separated from the spawning medium once spawning is complete, or a dedicated breeding setup used.

Incubation period and fry development data for M. sylvicola specifically are not well documented in the accessible literature; by analogy with closely related Mimagoniates species, hatching is expected within several days at typical tropical temperatures, producing tiny, fragile larvae that require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food as first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. A separate, well-aged rearing vessel with gentle filtration and no strong current is advisable. Soft, slightly acidic water matching the species' natural habitat is recommended for conditioning and spawning.

In the aquarium

Mimagoniates sylvicola is an uncommon aquarium fish kept mainly by specialists interested in the glandulocaudine group. It is best maintained as a shoal of six or more individuals in a smaller, quiet, well-planted aquarium — a tank of 17.5–23.5 in in length is adequate for a small group given the species' 1 in adult size. A dark substrate, subdued or dappled lighting, and dense planting along the sides and rear mimic the shaded forest-stream environment and reduce stress, encouraging more natural behaviour and better colouration.

Water should be soft and slightly acidic to neutral, clean, and well-oxygenated with gentle flow. Given its small size, tankmates should be chosen with care: other small, peaceful fish of similar size that will not outcompete it at feeding or stress it with boisterous behaviour are appropriate. It may be kept with small corydoras, other quiet nano tetras, or similarly scaled rasboras. The species is peaceful and does not fin-nip. The primary challenge in keeping it well is sourcing tank-bred stock and providing the small live foods that maintain condition and support reproduction.

Conservation

Mimagoniates sylvicola has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List; its status is Not Evaluated (NE) as of the time of writing. This is not unusual for smaller, less commercially prominent Atlantic Forest stream fishes, many of which have received limited formal conservation attention despite occurring in a biome that has lost more than 85 percent of its original extent and supports exceptionally high levels of freshwater endemism.

The Atlantic Forest continues to face pressure from deforestation, agricultural runoff, water abstraction, and urban expansion across its range in Brazil. Stream fishes with restricted distributions are among the most vulnerable freshwater vertebrates in this landscape. While no specific threat data are available for M. sylvicola, the degradation of clear-water forest streams through riparian forest loss is a documented driver of decline across the endemic fish fauna of the biome. Aquarists keeping and breeding the species contribute to a captive population that retains value if wild populations come under pressure.
