The parenthetical authority reflects a subsequent genus transfer; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name. Mixobrycon is a monospecific genus — ribeiroi is its only species — and the genus is placed incertae sedis within the Characidae, meaning its precise subfamily relationships remain unresolved.

The ETYFish Project records that the species is named for Alípio de Miranda Ribeiro (1874–1939), a Brazilian ichthyologist and herpetologist whose surveys of South American freshwater faunas contributed substantially to the region's zoological record. The genus name Mixobrycon combines Greek roots encoding some aspect of the fish's body or habits, though detailed etymology is not well documented in the available literature.

Morphology
