Moenkhausia affinis is a small characid tetra from the lower Rio Negro drainage of South America, reaching around 2.5 in standard length. One of the many modestly-coloured members of the large genus Moenkhausia, it is infrequently seen in the aquarium trade and remains poorly documented in the scientific literature — a species more familiar to field collectors than to the average hobbyist. The IUCN lists it as Data Deficient, reflecting how little is known of its ecology and population status.

Taxonomy & naming

Moenkhausia affinis was described by Franz Steindachner in 1915, from material collected in the lower Rio Negro of Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Moenkhausia affinis Steindachner, 1915. The species remains placed in Moenkhausia, a large and taxonomically complex genus in the family Characidae that has long served as something of a catch-all for mid-sized, laterally compressed South American tetras with a complete lateral line and a large eye.

The specific epithet affinis is Latin for 'related' or 'similar to', a term Steindachner applied to indicate resemblance to another Moenkhausia known at the time. Moenkhausia itself was erected by David Starr Jordan in 1895 and named in honour of the American naturalist William James Moenkhaus. The genus currently contains well over a hundred nominal species, and recent molecular work has highlighted the likelihood that it is polyphyletic in its current composition, meaning future revisions may reassign some members to new or resurrected genera.

Morphology

Moenkhausia affinis is a small, laterally compressed tetra with a typical Moenkhausia body plan: a moderately deep oval profile, a large eye relative to head length, and a complete lateral line. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 2.5 in. Like most members of the genus it is unlikely to win prizes for colour; the base livery is a translucent silvery body with a reflective sheen and subtle iridescence along the flanks, with markings that may include a diffuse humeral spot and a dark caudal peduncle mark.

Details of meristics and colouration for this species are not well documented in the accessible literature. Identification within Moenkhausia can be challenging because many species converge on similar overall proportions, and reliable diagnosis typically requires examination of scale counts, fin-ray counts, and details of the teeth under magnification. Sexual dimorphism is likely subtle, as is typical for the genus — gravid females may appear noticeably fuller-bodied than males.

Habitat

Moenkhausia affinis is recorded from the lower Rio Negro drainage in Brazil, a blackwater tributary of the Amazon that enters the main river near Manaus. The Rio Negro is one of the most characteristic blackwater systems in the world: the water is deeply tea-coloured from dissolved humic and fulvic acids leached from forest soils, extremely soft, with conductivity often below 10 µS/cm, and acidic, with pH values commonly between 4 and 6. Temperatures in the lower Negro typically range from around 79 °F to 86 °F.

Within such large river systems, small tetras of this type typically inhabit slow-moving or still marginal waters — flooded forest (igapó), flooded meadows, sheltered backwaters, and tributary streams — where submerged vegetation, leaf litter, and submerged roots provide cover. Published habitat detail specific to M. affinis is sparse.

Feeding

No published dietary data specific to Moenkhausia affinis is available in the accessible literature. By analogy with the genus and the broader Characidae, it is almost certainly a generalised omnivore, taking small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, microcrustaceans, insect larvae, and plant material or algae opportunistically. Small tetras in blackwater forest habitats are often documented consuming allochthonous inputs — insects and other invertebrates that fall or drift into the water from the overhanging vegetation.

In the aquarium, congeners of similar size and ecology are routinely maintained on a varied diet of good-quality dried flake and micro-pellets supplemented with small frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, and micro-worms. A similar regime would be appropriate for M. affinis, and a varied diet is generally associated with better colouration and breeding condition in small tetras.

Mating

No published mating observations specific to Moenkhausia affinis are available. Within the genus, the reproductive strategy is egg-scattering with no parental care, and this is almost certainly the case for M. affinis as well. Congeners such as Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae are typical egg-scattering free-spawners: males display to and chase females, with the pair eventually embracing briefly among fine-leaved plants or over open substrate to release and fertilise a batch of small, non-adhesive or mildly adhesive eggs.

Displaying males tend to be more intensely coloured and active. Spawning in Moenkhausia typically occurs across multiple short bouts rather than in one concentrated event. Both sexes ignore the eggs after release, and the parents will readily eat any eggs they encounter, so the spawning substrate and eggs should be removed from the adults in a managed breeding attempt.

Breeding

Documented captive breeding records for Moenkhausia affinis are lacking, but the genus-level pattern is well established from congeners. Egg-scattering Moenkhausia breed most reliably in soft, slightly acidic water that mirrors their blackwater origins — conductivity kept low, pH in the mildly acidic range, and temperature in the upper-20s Celsius. Dim lighting, fine-leaved plants such as Java moss, or synthetic spawning mops provide the spawning medium; eggs are deposited among this material and should be removed promptly to prevent predation by the adults.

Eggs of soft-water tetras are typically small and hatch within 24–48 hours at breeding temperature. The tiny fry initially need infusoria or commercial liquid fry food before graduating to freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and fine powdered food. Growth tends to be gradual. Because M. affinis is seldom commercially bred and rarely encountered in the trade, most available specimens are likely wild-caught.

In the aquarium

Moenkhausia affinis is not a common aquarium fish. When encountered it should be treated as a blackwater tetra requiring soft, acidic conditions to thrive long-term: pH in the range of 4.5–6.5, very low hardness, and temperatures of 79–86 °F. A dimly lit tank with dark substrate, dried leaf litter, and driftwood to tannin the water will replicate the igapó and forest-stream conditions of the lower Rio Negro and will encourage the fish to display its natural behaviour rather than spending its time hidden or stressed.

As a social species it should be kept in a group of at least six individuals. It is small and peaceful and best suited to a species tank or a community of similarly sized, soft-water tetras and small catfish from the same region. Robust or boisterous tankmates should be avoided. Data on captive longevity and long-term care requirements are sparse given the species' rarity in the hobby.

Conservation

Moenkhausia affinis is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, indicating that insufficient information exists to make a direct or indirect assessment of its risk of extinction based on its distribution and population status. The DD listing does not mean the species is not at risk; it means that a proper assessment has not yet been possible.

The lower Rio Negro supports a remarkable diversity of endemic fish species, and this entire system faces ongoing pressures from deforestation in the catchment, water quality changes linked to land use, and collection for the ornamental fish trade. Because Moenkhausia affinis is not commercially significant in the trade and has received little scientific attention, basic data on its abundance, range extent, and population trends remain unpublished. More field survey work in the lower Rio Negro would be needed to move this species out of the Data Deficient category.
