Moenkhausia atahualpiana was originally described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1907 as Astyanax atahualpianus, with the type locality recorded as Pebas, a town on the Amazonas River in northeastern Peru. The holotype is deposited at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (ANSP 21435). The species was subsequently transferred to the genus Moenkhausia, where Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (the authority for valid names) records it as Moenkhausia atahualpiana (Fowler, 1907); the parenthetical authority indicates the species was not originally placed in Moenkhausia.
Moenkhausia is one of the largest and most species-rich genera in the family Characidae, encompassing numerous small to mid-sized schooling tetras distributed across tropical South America. The genus is defined primarily by the presence of a complete lateral line and a scaled caudal fin, though these characters can vary; comprehensive systematic revisions are ongoing. Within Moenkhausia, atahualpiana is not assigned to a named species group in the literature captured here; its nearest relatives and precise phylogenetic position remain to be resolved by future molecular work.
Morphology

Spawning in congeners occurs most readily in the morning hours under natural or simulated dawn light cycles, with ripe pairs or small groups releasing eggs among plant leaves or spawning mops. The adhesive eggs attach briefly to plant material or settle to the bottom; males take no territorial role beyond the spawning act itself.
Breeding

In the aquarium
Moenkhausia atahualpiana is not a common aquarium fish and is rarely encountered in the hobby trade, making specific care accounts scarce. Its biology — a small, omnivorous schooling characid from the Peruvian Amazon — places it squarely in the same care bracket as other Moenkhausia and similarly sized Amazonian tetras. A well-filtered aquarium of 15 US gal or more, maintained at 75–82 °F with soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water, would suit the species well.
As a schooling fish it should be kept in a group of at least six individuals to express natural behaviour and reduce stress-induced hiding. A planted tank with open central swimming space, subdued lighting, and dark substrate will show the fish to best effect and encourage settled behaviour. Peaceful community tankmates of similar size — other small tetras, small corydoras, and dwarf cichlids — are appropriate. The species is not known to nip fins or show aggression toward heterospecifics. Any specimens encountered are likely wild-caught from Peru, so acclimatisation to typical water conditions used in the hobby should be done gradually.
Conservation
Moenkhausia atahualpiana is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2014. The designation reflects the species' apparent stability across its range within the Peruvian Amazon basin and the absence of known major threats driving population decline at the time of assessment. The Amazon basin as a whole supports one of the highest freshwater fish diversities on Earth, and many of its small, broadly distributed characids carry LC status.
Nonetheless, the broader Amazon system faces escalating pressures from deforestation, agricultural runoff, artisanal and industrial gold mining (which introduces mercury into river systems), and large-scale infrastructure projects. Species endemic to the Peruvian Amazon are exposed to these threats even when current assessments are reassuring. As a rarely traded and little-studied fish, the population status of M. atahualpiana in the wild is not closely monitored; routine IUCN reassessment cycles will determine whether the LC status remains appropriate as data accumulate.
