Taxonomy & naming
Moenkhausia agnesae was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1965, published in Senckenbergiana Biologica volume 46(1), page 14, with plate 1, figures 1–2. The type locality recorded by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Igarapé Preto, upper Amazon approximately 37 mi below Leticia, Brazil — a blackwater tributary close to the point where the Brazilian, Colombian, and Peruvian frontiers converge, a region known historically as Tres Fronteras.
The genus Moenkhausia is one of the largest in the family Characidae, encompassing more than 80 described species spread across much of tropical South America. Members are broadly united by the presence of a complete lateral line and the absence of the adipose-fin spine present in some related genera, but the genus is almost certainly not monophyletic as currently constituted and has been the subject of ongoing systematic revision. M. agnesae sits within the upper Amazon radiation of the genus and has not been the subject of major revisionary work that would redefine its placement.
Morphology
Moenkhausia agnesae is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed characid with the typical body plan of the genus: a relatively high-backed body, a forked tail, an adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal, and a blunt snout. FishBase records a maximum size of 2.5 in standard length, making it a medium-sized Moenkhausia comparable in proportions to familiar congeners.
Detailed colouration notes from the original description are sparse in available secondary sources. The species is a benthopelagic fish occupying the water column from mid-depth to near the substrate. As with most Moenkhausia, sexual dimorphism is subtle in terms of colour, with females typically rounder in the belly when gravid; distinguishing individuals at a glance is not straightforward without the fish in breeding condition.
Habitat
The type locality — Igarapé Preto near Tres Fronteras in the upper Amazon — situates M. agnesae in the terra firme blackwater streams and igarapés characteristic of the western Amazon basin. These are small, often shaded watercourses running over sandy or leaf-littered substrates, with water stained brown by dissolved humic and fulvic acids leaching from organic material in the forest floor.
The water parameters reported for this region and confirmed by hobbyist data are markedly soft and acidic: temperatures of 73–86 °F (optimum 77–82 °F) and pH 5.0–7.0 (ideal 5.5–6.8). Conductivity is very low, reflecting the absence of dissolved minerals in Amazonian rainforest streams. The species occupies the upper Amazon basin broadly between about 1 °S and 5 °S latitude.
Feeding
FishBase classifies Moenkhausia agnesae as carnivorous. In its natural blackwater habitat it likely feeds on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, and invertebrates falling onto the water surface — as is typical for small-to-medium characids of the upper Amazon.
Hobbyist sources describe it as omnivorous in practice, noting an appetite for small crustaceans and insects. In the aquarium it can be expected to accept a range of small prepared and live or frozen foods including Artemia, Daphnia, small bloodworm, and micro-pellets, with live or frozen items preferred to sustain condition and colour.
Mating
No detailed field observations of mating behaviour in Moenkhausia agnesae have been published in the sources available. On the basis of its family membership and congener biology, the species is presumed to be a typical characid egg-scatterer: males court females with brief chasing behaviour, and spawning occurs in open water or among fine-leaved aquatic plants, with eggs dispersed rather than deposited in a prepared nest.
As with most Moenkhausia, parental care is absent — adults show no guarding behaviour and will eat both eggs and newly hatched fry if they encounter them. The species is noted in hobbyist sources as egg-laying (ovipare), consistent with this pattern across the genus.
Breeding
Hobbyist records confirm that M. agnesae is an egg-laying species, though dedicated breeding accounts in English-language hobby literature are essentially absent, reflecting its rarity in the trade. By analogy with well-documented congeners, breeding in captivity would typically involve conditioning a small group in soft, acidic, warm water (pH around 6.0–6.5, temperature 79–82 °F) and providing fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops over which the fish can scatter adhesive eggs.
Eggs in egg-scattering characids typically hatch within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, with free-swimming fry appearing a day or two later. The fry are initially tiny and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Adults must be removed after spawning to prevent predation of the eggs. Given the species' scarcity in the trade, aquarists who acquire breeding groups are encouraged to document their results for the benefit of the wider hobby.
In the aquarium
Moenkhausia agnesae is described by hobbyist sources as extremely rare in the trade — an uncommon import from the Tres Fronteras region that appears only sporadically in specialist circles. Aquarists who obtain it should replicate its blackwater origins: soft, acidic water (pH 5.5–6.8, very low hardness), temperatures of 77–82 °F, subdued lighting, a dark substrate, and the addition of leaf litter or peat filtration to tint the water and bring down pH.
As a schooling species, it should be kept in a group of at least ten individuals in a tank of 25 US gal or more, allowing the fish to express natural shoaling behaviour and reducing stress-related loss of colour and condition. Peaceful, similarly sized tankmates from comparable soft-water Amazonian environments — small pencilfish, dwarf cichlids, and other quiet characids — make suitable companions. This is a fish for the specialist rather than the general community tank, and its rarity means careful husbandry and an eye toward potential captive breeding are worthwhile goals.
Conservation
Moenkhausia agnesae is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated March 4, 2021. FishBase notes that population modelling places it in the resilient category, with a doubling time of less than 15 months — a characteristic of small, fecund, short-lived fish that can recover from localised declines relatively quickly.
The upper Amazon basin, while subject to ongoing deforestation and agricultural encroachment, still harbours extensive blackwater stream habitats across the Tres Fronteras region. The species' broad distribution across the western Amazon basin, combined with its apparent tolerance of the variable conditions typical of igarapé systems, underpins the Least Concern assessment. No specific conservation actions are currently required, though continued monitoring of Amazonian freshwater biodiversity is important as land-use change accelerates in the region.
