Moenkhausia beninei is a small characid described in 2018 from the upper Rio Negro basin in Amazonas, Brazil. It was distinguished from its congeners primarily by two irregularly shaped humeral blotches and a pattern of dark longitudinal stripes running along the dorsal body — markings that set it apart within a diverse and challenging genus of neotropical tetras. As a blackwater specialist from one of the world's most species-rich river systems, it represents the ongoing work of documenting the remarkable fish diversity of Amazonia.

Taxonomy & naming

Moenkhausia beninei was described by F. C. T. Lima and I. M. Soares in 2018, in a paper published in Zootaxa (volume 4461). The type locality is the upper Rio Negro basin in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name Moenkhausia beninei Lima & Soares, 2018.

The genus Moenkhausia is one of the largest in the family Characidae and has long presented taxonomic difficulties: it is almost certainly not monophyletic in its current circumscription, and species limits within the group have been revised repeatedly as new material is studied. Lima and Soares placed M. beninei within the genus based on a combination of characters including the presence of a complete lateral line and fully scaled body, features shared broadly by the group but combined with the diagnostic humeral and dorsal stripe markings unique to this species.

No common name has been formally established for M. beninei in the aquarium hobby or scientific literature. The species epithet honours an individual named Beni Soares (or a similar honoree noted by the authors), though the precise dedication details should be confirmed against the original publication.

Morphology

Moenkhausia beninei is a small, laterally compressed characid with the typical tetra body plan: a moderately deep, silvery-scaled body with a forked tail and the family's characteristic adipose fin. Maximum size data are sparse for this recently described species, and aquarium records are largely absent; it is expected to fall within the small-to-medium size range typical of the genus, likely under 3 in total length.

The diagnostic markings that separate M. beninei from its congeners are two irregularly shaped humeral blotches — dark spots positioned on the shoulder just behind the operculum — and a series of dark longitudinal stripes running along the dorsal portion of the body. This combination of a double humeral spot with dorsal stripes is not found in other described Moenkhausia species and served as the primary basis for the original species description. As with many small characids, coloration may appear washed out under stress or in shipping, but should intensify in stable, well-maintained blackwater conditions.

Habitat

Moenkhausia beninei is known from the upper Rio Negro basin in Amazonas, Brazil. The Rio Negro is a blackwater river — one of the largest blackwater systems on Earth — draining the Guiana Shield and northwestern Amazonia. Its waters are soft, highly acidic, and stained deep brown by dissolved humic and fulvic acids leached from decaying leaf litter and organic matter in the surrounding rainforest soils.

Water chemistry in the upper Rio Negro is characteristically extreme: pH readings of 4.3–6.5 are typical, general hardness approaches zero (0–4 dGH), and temperatures range from approximately 77–82 °F (77–82 °F). These ion-poor, low-conductivity blackwaters support an extraordinary diversity of specialist fish fauna adapted to conditions that would stress most freshwater species. M. beninei is presumed to share the habitat preferences of other upper Rio Negro endemics: slow to moderately flowing channels and flooded forest margins with heavy leaf litter substrate, submerged wood, and dense riparian vegetation providing shade and cover.

Feeding

No specific dietary studies have been published for Moenkhausia beninei. Based on its congeners and the general feeding ecology of small characids from the Rio Negro, it is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore feeding on small invertebrates, insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and plant material in the wild. Small tetras in blackwater environments also frequently take surface-fallen insects and terrestrial invertebrates.

In the aquarium, small Moenkhausia species generally accept a varied diet of good-quality dried foods supplemented with small live and frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. A mixed diet is likely to maintain condition and encourage natural behaviour. As with most small characids, feeding small amounts multiple times per day is preferable to a single large feeding.

Mating

No published observations of mating behaviour exist specifically for Moenkhausia beninei. Based on the reproductive biology of the genus Moenkhausia and small characids generally, the species is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner without parental care — the typical reproductive strategy across the Characidae.

Males in the genus Moenkhausia typically become more intensely coloured and active during courtship, actively chasing females through fine-leaved vegetation or open water. The courtship drive is often stimulated by cooler water changes, increased rainfall simulation, or gradual acidification mimicking flood-season conditions in the wild Rio Negro environment. Spawning in related species involves the pair swimming close together with the male pressing against the female's flank and briefly clasping before eggs and milt are released simultaneously.

Breeding

Moenkhausia beninei has not been bred in captivity as far as current records show, and no hobbyist accounts of successful spawning have been published. By analogy with other small Moenkhausia species, spawning would be expected to follow the standard egg-scattering pattern: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs scattered among fine-leaved plants, spawning mops, or over open substrate, with no parental care and strong egg-eating tendency from the adults once spawning is complete.

Breeders attempting this species should provide very soft, acidic water matching the Rio Negro origin (pH 4.5–6.5, near-zero hardness), a raised temperature of 81–82 °F (81–82 °F), and dimly lit conditions with Java moss or equivalent fine-leaved spawning medium. Eggs would be removed immediately after spawning to a separate, similarly conditioned rearing vessel. Fry are expected to be small and to require infusoria or commercial micro-fry foods as first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.

In the aquarium

Moenkhausia beninei is a recent scientific description with very limited presence in the aquarium hobby as of 2026. Wild-caught specimens from the upper Rio Negro are occasionally available through specialist importers dealing in Rio Negro biotope species, but the fish is not established in captive culture and should be treated as a rare and delicate species requiring careful husbandry.

Any aquarium for this species should reflect its blackwater origins closely: very soft, acidic water (pH 4.5–6.5, GH near zero), temperatures of 77–82 °F (77–82 °F), subdued lighting, a dark substrate, and abundant leaf litter, driftwood, and fine-leaved plants. Strong filtration with minimal current is appropriate; peat filtration or the addition of Indian almond leaves help maintain correct chemistry. As a schooling species it should be kept in groups of at least six. Compatible tankmates are other small, acid-tolerant Rio Negro species such as dwarf cichlids (Apistogramma), small Corydoras, or other similarly sized blackwater tetras. Water changes with soft, slightly acidic water are important for long-term health.

Conservation

Moenkhausia beninei has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. As a species described only in 2018, it falls within a large cohort of recently described Amazonian fishes that have not yet been reviewed under IUCN criteria. This lack of assessment does not imply that the species is secure — many Amazonian endemics with restricted ranges are potentially vulnerable to habitat pressures even before formal evaluation.

The upper Rio Negro basin, while remote, is not without threats. Deforestation, gold mining (garimpo), and associated mercury contamination affect portions of the Rio Negro watershed, and illegal extraction of ornamental fish from sensitive blackwater environments is an ongoing concern. For a species known only from the upper Rio Negro basin, any significant degradation of that habitat would represent a meaningful threat. Until a formal IUCN assessment is carried out, the precautionary approach is to prefer tank-bred stock where available and to support conservation of Amazonian blackwater habitats broadly.
