Moenkhausia bonita is a small, vividly marked characin from the upper Rio Miranda drainage of the Rio Paraguay basin in southwestern Brazil — a stream that lent its name to the fish's home: the Rio Baía Bonita near the ecotourism town of Bonito in Mato Grosso do Sul. Described formally in 2004, it belongs to a large and still-incompletely-resolved genus, and is distinguished from its relatives by a combination of a bold black midlateral stripe, conspicuous black lobes on the caudal fin, and a dark lozenge-shaped blotch at the base of the tail. The IUCN assesses it as Least Concern.

Taxonomy & naming

Moenkhausia bonita was described by Benine, Castro & Sabino in 2004 in the journal Copeia, based on material collected from the Rio Baía Bonita, a tributary of the Rio Miranda in Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul, southwestern Brazil. The valid name per Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Moenkhausia bonita Benine, Castro & Sabino, 2004. Because the species was described in Moenkhausia, where it remains placed, no parenthetical authority is used.

Moenkhausia is one of the largest genera in the family Characidae, with well over a hundred described species distributed broadly across South American river basins. Phylogenetic placement within the genus has historically been difficult owing to overlapping meristic characters, and the relationships of M. bonita to other species remain an active area of investigation. A geographic variation study has documented morphological differentiation across Rio de la Plata basin localities, indicating that the species occupies a broader range than the type locality alone, though details of that variation are still being resolved.

Morphology

Moenkhausia bonita is a slender, moderately compressed characin reaching up to about 3.5 in standard length — relatively large for the genus. The body is silvery with a prominent black midlateral stripe running from behind the operculum to the caudal peduncle. The caudal fin carries black pigment on both the upper and lower lobes, and there is a distinctive black lozenge-shaped blotch on the caudal peduncle itself, forming a bold tail pattern that assists identification in the field.

Gill-raker counts were recorded in the original description as 7 upper and 12 lower on the first arch, providing a hard meristic character to separate it from similar Moenkhausia species. The overall impression in life is of a bright, active schooling fish; the contrast between the dark lateral band and the silvery flanks is sharpest in well-conditioned specimens under natural lighting.

Habitat

The type locality is the Rio Baía Bonita, a tributary of the upper Rio Miranda in the Rio Paraguay basin near Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil — a region internationally known for its spring-fed rivers of exceptional clarity. FishBase records the species in marginal backwater habitats with low current, typically at depths of 0–3 ft, where it forms schools of 10 to 30 individuals. These habitats are characterized by submerged and emergent riparian vegetation providing overhead cover and insect fall.

Subsequent dietary studies conducted in the Rio Formoso basin streams confirm that the species occurs beyond the type locality, with distribution extending across portions of the Rio de la Plata basin. A published geographic-variation study further documents its presence at multiple localities in that basin, suggesting it is a widespread inhabitant of clear, lowland streams across this drainage system in southwestern Brazil.

Feeding

Moenkhausia bonita is an insectivore that feeds predominantly at the water surface. Diet studies document consumption of terrestrial insects — particularly Diptera (flies) and Coleoptera (beetles) — that fall onto the water surface, a foraging strategy common among small characins living in riparian stream environments where the canopy provides a steady input of allochthonous prey. Confirmation of surface-picking as the principal mode came from dietary work carried out in the Rio Formoso basin, which aligns with FishBase records for the species.

In aquaria, the species accepts a variety of prepared and live foods. A diet that includes small live or frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, bloodworm, and brine shrimp alongside quality flake or micropellet food suits its natural insectivorous preferences and helps maintain colour and condition. Feeding at or near the surface remains the preferred foraging position.

Mating

Like the great majority of Moenkhausia and characins broadly, M. bonita is an egg-scattering open spawner. No specialized mating structures or prolonged pair bonds have been documented for this species; spawning is presumed to follow the typical characid pattern in which ripe individuals school together and scatter adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, submerged roots, or other suitable substrate without further male-female coordination.

Sexual dimorphism is subtle in most Moenkhausia. In conditioned adult groups, females may appear slightly deeper-bodied when gravid, which is a reliable cue for aquarists attempting to identify breeding pairs. There is no parental care; adults scatter eggs and immediately lose interest in them.

Breeding

FishBase confirms that Moenkhausia bonita provides no parental care, consistent with the egg-scattering strategy of the genus. In aquarium practice, breeding is induced by conditioning adults on live and frozen foods, performing a partial water change with slightly cooler water to simulate the onset of a rainy season, and providing fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops as egg substrate.

Eggs are adhesive and hatch within a few days at tropical temperatures. Because adults readily consume both eggs and newly hatched fry, breeders typically remove the spawning medium to a separate container or separate the adults immediately after spawning is observed. Fry are very small at hatching and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food as a first food before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp as they grow. Data on precise clutch sizes and incubation times under controlled conditions are sparse for this species specifically.

In the aquarium

Moenkhausia bonita is kept as an ornamental fish in Brazil and has reached the hobby elsewhere, though it remains less common in international trade than many congeners. Its bold black-and-silver patterning and schooling behaviour make it an attractive display fish in community aquaria. A group of six or more individuals shows the species to best advantage and reduces inter-individual stress; solo specimens or very small groups often remain shy.

Water conditions matching its origin in clear, warm Cerrado streams are appropriate: temperatures in the range of roughly 72–82 °F, neutral to slightly acidic to circumneutral pH, and good water quality with efficient filtration. The species is an active mid-to-surface swimmer and does best in a well-planted tank with open swimming space. Tankmates should be peaceful species of similar size; its predatory surface-feeding style means it will consume very small fish or fry. Availability in the hobby outside Brazil is intermittent.

Conservation

Moenkhausia bonita is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in 2018. This reflects a distribution that, while centred on the upper Rio Miranda and Rio Baía Bonita, extends across multiple localities in the broader Rio de la Plata basin, providing some resilience against localised habitat changes.

The type locality near Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul is situated within a well-known ecotourism region where the clarity of spring-fed rivers is a major economic asset, creating local incentives for water-quality protection. Nevertheless, broader pressures on Cerrado stream habitats — including agricultural run-off, water abstraction, and deforestation of riparian corridors — affect many species in this biome, and continued monitoring of stream-fish communities in the region is warranted.
