Moenkhausia britskii is a small characid tetra from the upper Içá (Putumayo) River drainage in the Brazilian Amazon, described in 2016 and reaching just under 2.5 in standard length. Known from a narrow stretch of river near Santo Antônio do Içá in the state of Amazonas, it is one of many congeners in the large and diverse genus Moenkhausia, characterised by a distinctive pigmentation pattern and scale structure that set it apart from its closest relatives.

Taxonomy & naming

Moenkhausia britskii was formally described by Azevedo-Santos and Benine in 2016 in the journal Zoosystematics and Evolution (volume 92, issue 2). The type locality is the Rio Içá approximately 37 mi above its mouth, near the town of Santo Antônio do Içá, Amazonas state, Brazil (approximately 3°0'7.68"S, 69°2'49.52"W); additional material was collected from Igarapé da Cachoeira, a tributary of the Içá within the greater Amazon basin. The holotype measures 2 in standard length, and examined specimens ranged from 1.5–2.5 in SL.

The species belongs to the large neotropical genus Moenkhausia, placed within the family Characidae. The genus currently contains well over 80 species of small to medium-sized tetras distributed across South American river drainages from the Orinoco to the Río de la Plata. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name Moenkhausia britskii Azevedo-Santos & Benine, 2016. The species was distinguished from congeners primarily by its pigmentation pattern and the structure of scale radii — characters used extensively in Moenkhausia systematics.

The specific epithet britskii is a patronym, though the details of the honoree are contained in the original description. As a newly described species from a peripheral tributary of the Amazon, M. britskii remains poorly known beyond its type series and has not been widely reported in subsequent systematic surveys.

Morphology

Moenkhausia britskii is a moderately sized member of its genus, with specimens in the type series measuring 1.5–2.5 in SL and a maximum recorded standard length of 2.5 in (approximately 2.5 in). The holotype measured 2 in SL. Like most Moenkhausia, it is a laterally compressed, fusiform characid with the typical tetra body plan: a relatively deep body, prominent eyes, and the family's characteristic adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal.

The original description characterises the species by specific aspects of its pigmentation pattern and scale radii structure, characters that distinguish it from the several similar congeners that occur in the same region. Beyond the type-series data, detailed colour descriptions in life are sparse in the literature. The species shares the general silvery-to-golden body colouration common to many Moenkhausia, and like most in the genus would be expected to show a dark humeral spot, a caudal peduncle band, or lateral stripe depending on individual condition and life stage — though the precise configuration that defines M. britskii specifically is as documented in the original description.

Habitat

Moenkhausia britskii is not recorded as an established aquarium fish and does not appear in the ornamental trade. It is known only from scientific collections at the type locality. Should the species become available to hobbyists, it would likely suit similar conditions to other western-Amazon Moenkhausia: good filtration, low to moderate flow, subdued or dappled lighting, and peaceful tankmates of comparable size. Until it is collected and maintained in captivity, husbandry observations remain speculative.

Moenkhausia britskii has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; its status is Not Evaluated (NE). As a species described in 2016 from a limited number of specimens at a single river system in the Brazilian Amazon, it lacks the distributional and population data necessary for a formal assessment.

The Içá/Putumayo drainage in the western Amazon is subject to ongoing pressures including gold mining, agricultural expansion, and infrastructure development in both Brazil and Colombia. The extent to which these pressures affect small tributaries such as Igarapé da Cachoeira — where the species was collected — is not documented in the available literature. Given the very restricted known range and small type series, targeted surveys to clarify the species' distribution and abundance would be a prerequisite for any conservation assessment.
