Moenkhausia celibela is a small, slender characid described in 2010 by Nasser Marinho and Francisco Langeani from river systems in central Brazil. Inconspicuous in colouration compared with many of its flashier relatives, it belongs to a genus of roughly 80 species — one of the larger tetra genera — and occupies the kind of clear, plant-fringed Neotropical stream habitat that defines the mid-level of the Amazon basin's immense fish diversity. It has no established common name and remains largely unknown outside specialist circles.

Taxonomy & naming

Moenkhausia celibela was described by Nasser Marinho and Francisco Langeani in 2010 and is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) as a valid species in the genus Moenkhausia Eigenmann, 1903. The genus belongs to the family Characidae, the principal family of the order Characiformes in the Neotropics and one of the most species-rich vertebrate families on Earth.

Monkhausia is an exceptionally large genus whose boundaries have been repeatedly revised. Molecular and morphological work has caused repeated transfers among closely related genera, and the full circumscription of Moenkhausia remains a subject of ongoing systematic research. M. celibela is part of this large, taxonomically complex assemblage and has not yet been assigned to one of the informal species groups recognised within the genus. The valid name stands as described, with no subsequent nomenclatural changes recorded.

Morphology

Like most members of Moenkhausia, M. celibela is a small, laterally compressed characid with a fusiform body, a forked caudal fin, and a single adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal. The species falls within the size range typical of small Moenkhausia, with adults reaching only a few centimetres in total length. Coloration is relatively plain: a silvery body with a dark lateral stripe or caudal peduncle spot is characteristic of many members of the genus, though the precise patterning details that distinguish M. celibela from close relatives require close examination of preserved material.

The dentition pattern and scale counts that define the species within Moenkhausia were documented in the original description. As with many newly described Neotropical characids, the distinguishing morphological characters are subtle meristic and morphometric differences rather than striking colour features visible at a distance, making field or trade identification of this species challenging without reference to the original description.

Habitat

Moenkhausia celibela is a Neotropical freshwater species from river drainages in Brazil. Members of the genus typically inhabit a range of lotic and lentic environments — clear-water forest streams, blackwater tributaries, and the vegetated margins of larger rivers — at low to moderate elevations across the Amazon, Orinoco, and adjacent Atlantic drainages of South America.

Based on the general ecology of small Moenkhausia species, M. celibela is likely associated with shallow, well-oxygenated waters with substrate of sand or fine gravel, marginal or submerged aquatic vegetation, and moderate current. Water chemistry in these habitats tends toward soft and acidic to slightly neutral conditions, reflecting the leached soils and organic inputs of tropical lowland forest catchments. Feeding

Small Moenkhausia are generalised opportunistic feeders in the wild, taking a mixed diet of small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface — together with algae, plant fragments, and organic detritus. This omnivorous feeding strategy is broadly consistent across the genus and reflects the food resources available in Neotropical stream margins.

In aquarium care, M. celibela would be expected to accept a wide variety of commercial foods including quality flake, micropellets, and small frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, Cyclops, and newly hatched brine shrimp. A varied diet supports health and colour in small characids and reduces the risk of nutritional deficiencies associated with a monotonous prepared-food regime.

Mating

No specific mating behaviour has been documented in published literature for Moenkhausia celibela. The species is presumed to follow the general pattern of small egg-scattering characids: males court receptive females with lateral displays and rapid pursuit, and spawning takes place in open water or among fine-leaved vegetation or submerged roots near the bottom or substrate.

In related small Moenkhausia species, spawning activity peaks in the early morning and can be triggered by slightly cooler, softer water mimicking the rainy-season inundation that stimulates breeding in the wild. No pair bond is formed, and there is no known parental care in this group.

Breeding

Moenkhausia celibela has not been documented in the aquarium literature as a captive-bred species. Based on the general biology of the genus, breeding would be expected to follow the typical small-characid pattern: egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with adhesive eggs and no parental care. Adults will readily consume both eggs and fry if not separated after spawning.

Egg incubation in small Neotropical characids typically spans 24–48 hours at warm tropical temperatures, with free-swimming fry appearing a day or two later. First foods for the very small fry of Moenkhausia species are infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry foods, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp as the fish grow. Spawning would likely be encouraged by soft, slightly acidic, warm water and live or frozen conditioning foods fed to the adults.

In the aquarium

Moenkhausia celibela is not currently an established aquarium fish and is absent from the mainstream ornamental trade. Its small size and probable hardiness make it theoretically suitable for a mature, planted community aquarium with soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water in the tropical range (around 75–82 °F). As with other small schooling characids, a group of at least six individuals would be expected to produce natural behaviour and reduce stress.

The species would be best housed with similarly sized, peaceful tankmates — other small tetras, pencilfish, corydoras, or dwarf cichlids — and given good water quality, regular partial water changes, and a varied diet. If it enters the hobby in the future, care requirements would be consistent with those of other small, undemanding Moenkhausia species. Data sparse: no keeper accounts or care guides have been published for this species.

Conservation

Moenkhausia celibela has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List as of the current date. This is not unusual for a recently described Neotropical small fish: the majority of the thousands of known Characidae species have not undergone formal IUCN evaluation, and newly described taxa typically wait years or decades before assessment resources are directed to them.

Brazilian freshwater biodiversity broadly faces pressures from deforestation, agricultural runoff, dam construction, and stream channelisation throughout the Amazon basin and adjacent river systems. Without a formal assessment or targeted field surveys since the original description, the conservation status of M. celibela and the condition of its known populations remain unknown. It is not recorded from any CITES appendix and is not traded commercially.
