Taxonomy & naming
Moenkhausia crisnejas was described by Pearson in Eigenmann & Myers (1929) from material collected at Paipay on the Río Crisnejas, an Amazon-system river in northern Peru. Type specimens are deposited at the California Academy of Sciences (CAS 60477). The valid name is listed under subfamily Pristellinae within the family Characidae. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, Fricke & van der Laan) records the authority as Pearson in Eigenmann & Myers, 1929.
The genus Moenkhausia Eigenmann, 1903 is one of the largest in the family Characidae, with more than 80 described species distributed across tropical South America. Species limits within the genus have been revised repeatedly, and several former Moenkhausia have been transferred to related genera; M. crisnejas has remained in the genus since its original description. Subfamily placement in Pristellinae aligns it with other small to mid-sized Neotropical tetras that include the widely kept Pristella maxillaris.
Morphology
No detailed morphological account for M. crisnejas has been widely published beyond the original description. Like other members of Moenkhausia the species is presumed to be a small, laterally compressed, silvery characid with the typical tetra body plan: a forked tail, adipose fin, and the characteristic small, dentate teeth of the subfamily.

Habitat
The type locality is Paipay on the Río Crisnejas, a river of the Amazon basin in the Cajamarca and La Libertad regions of northern Peru. The Crisnejas is a tributary of the Marañón, draining Andean foothills and inter-Andean valleys before joining the larger river. Waters in this zone vary considerably with altitude and season; Andean foothill streams in Peru typically run cool to warm depending on elevation, with moderate current and a mix of rocky substrate and accumulated leaf litter in quieter margins.
The species is listed as endemic to Peru and known specifically from the Crisnejas drainage. No field reports or ecological surveys dedicated to M. crisnejas appear in the accessible literature, so habitat preferences beyond what can be inferred from the drainage geography remain undocumented. Data on water chemistry specific to this species are not available.
Feeding
