Moenkhausia diktyota is a small, darkly patterned characid from the Rio Negro basin of Amazonian Brazil, distinguished by a reticulate body pattern — dark pigmentation tracing the posterior margins of each scale to create a net-like effect — and a bold horizontal black stripe running from the last anal fin ray through the middle caudal fin lobes. Described in 2001 from the blackwater igarapés of the upper Rio Negro, it is closely related to the familiar eye-spot tetras and was reassigned to the genus Bario (family Acestrorhamphidae) in a sweeping 2024 phylogenomic reclassification of Neotropical characiforms; its Moenkhausia name remains widely used in the aquarium trade and the broader literature.

Taxonomy & naming

Moenkhausia diktyota was described by Flávio Lima and Mônica Toledo-Piza in 2001 in the journal Copeia (volume 2001, issue 4, pp. 1058–1063), in a paper treating new species of Moenkhausia from the central Amazon. The type locality is an igarapé at São João near Santa Isabel do Rio Negro, at approximately 0°24′S, 65°02′W, in the state of Amazonas, Brazil.

Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS), the authority for valid names, records the current valid combination as Bario diktyotus (Lima & Toledo-Piza, 2001) following the comprehensive phylogenomic reclassification of characiform fishes by Melo et al. in 2024. That study moved the species from Moenkhausia into the genus Bario within the family Acestrorhamphidae (subfamily Thayeriinae). Because the reclassification postdates most of the literature and hobby records, this article uses the Moenkhausia name; hobbyists and older sources will know it only under that combination.

Within the pre-2024 genus Moenkhausia, the species was compared with M. oligolepis, M. sanctaefilomenae, and M. pyrophthalma — the large-eyed or red-eyed reticulate tetras — and distinguished from each by a unique combination of the caudal peduncle stripe, a uniform humeral mark, and specific meristic counts.

Morphology

Moenkhausia diktyota is a small characid reaching a maximum of about 2 in standard length. It has the typical compressed, moderately deep body of its genus group. A distinctive feature is the reticulate or net-like colour pattern produced by dark pigmentation concentrated on the posterior portions of each body scale, which creates a grid-like appearance across the flanks. A prominent, horizontally elongate black stripe extends from the base of the last anal fin ray to the tips of the middle caudal fin lobes.

The dorsal eye margin shows red pigmentation, an eye-ring character shared with several related species. Meristically, the species has 2 dorsal spines and 9 dorsal soft rays, 4 anal spines and 20–22 anal soft rays, and 33 vertebrae. The lateral line is incomplete, a character common in the Moenkhausia/reticulate-tetra group. The uniform humeral mark and specific caudal peduncle stripe pattern set it apart from the closest relatives in the original description.

Habitat

The species is native to the Rio Negro basin of Amazonas, Brazil, with records also from the Rio Orinoco basin in Colombia and Venezuela. The type locality — a blackwater igarapé near Santa Isabel do Rio Negro — is part of one of the most species-rich freshwater systems on Earth. The Rio Negro basin is home to more than 1,165 fish species; small-bodied characids are particularly diverse here, and many are endemic to individual tributary systems or isolated streams.

Blackwater igarapés are narrow, forest-shaded streams characterised by extremely soft, acidic, tea-coloured water stained with tannins and humic acids. Water temperatures are warm and stable, pH values are often below 5, and mineral content is very low. The fish is described as a pelagic, freshwater tropical species in the FishBase summary, suggesting it occupies open water rather than dense benthic cover within its stream habitats.

Feeding

No detailed dietary study of Moenkhausia diktyota specifically appears in the available literature. As a small Moenkhausia-group characid from Amazonian blackwater streams it would be expected to feed opportunistically on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and small terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface — as well as algae and organic detritus common in igarapé systems.

In captivity it can be kept on the standard diet appropriate for small tetras: good-quality micropellets and flake, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, and Cyclops, which help maintain colour and condition.

Mating

No specific field observations of mating behaviour in Moenkhausia diktyota are documented in the available literature. The broader Moenkhausia group are typical egg-scattering characids: sexually mature individuals form loose shoals, and males display laterally to females with erect fins. Spawning is initiated when a receptive female is pursued by one or more males into fine-leaved vegetation or other sheltered microhabitats.

Eggs are scattered and adhesive, attaching to aquatic plants or substrate surfaces. No parental care is provided by either sex, and adults will consume eggs if they remain accessible.

Breeding

Captive breeding records for Moenkhausia diktyota are sparse in the available literature. Based on the standard mode for the genus group, breeding would be accomplished by conditioning a small group of adults in soft, warm, acidic water and offering fine-leaved plants or spawning mops as a deposition site. Eggs are adhesive and would be removed once spawning is observed to prevent predation by the parents.

Blackwater conditions — very soft, low-pH water with temperature in the upper 20s Celsius — would be expected to stimulate spawning in a species from the Rio Negro igarapés. Data on clutch size, incubation period, and fry development specific to this species are not captured in the current literature consulted.

In the aquarium

Moenkhausia diktyota is not a common aquarium fish; it does not appear regularly in the trade and dedicated hobby literature on it is minimal. As a small, active characid from Amazonian blackwater it would be best maintained in a group of six or more in a soft, acidic setup replicating Rio Negro conditions: very soft water (low TDS), pH in the 4.5–6.5 range, warm temperatures around 75–82 °F, subdued or peat-filtered lighting, and a dark substrate with leaf litter and fine-leaved plants.

It would be expected to behave as a peaceful schooling species compatible with other small blackwater fish — pencilfish, small Apistogramma, small hatchetfish, or other Rio Negro tetras. Its reticulate pattern and eye-ring colouration make it an attractive, if specialist, aquarium subject for the blackwater enthusiast.

Conservation

Moenkhausia diktyota is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment recorded under version 2022.2. The species has a stable population and a reasonably wide distribution across the Rio Negro and Orinoco basins. The Rio Negro is one of the least disturbed major Amazonian river systems — its blackwater, high-acidity environment limits agricultural use and has historically protected it from intensive development.

While the species does not currently face elevated conservation concern, the broader Rio Negro ichthyofauna includes numerous narrowly endemic species with low dispersal capacity. Small-bodied blackwater characids endemic to isolated igarapé streams are sensitive to deforestation and associated changes in water chemistry and hydrology. The ongoing pressures on Amazonian forest cover represent a diffuse long-term risk to species in this system, even those currently assessed as secure.
