Moenkhausia eurystaenia is a small characid from the Rio Xingu basin of Mato Grosso, Brazil, described in 2010 by Manoela M. F. Marinho. It is set apart from its close relatives in the genus by a bold, broad dark stripe running from the opercle to the end of the caudal peduncle, fewer anal-fin rays (18–21 versus 24–26 in related species), and a lower vertebral count — characters that together make it immediately distinguishable in the hand. Wild fish reach just under 1.5 in standard length, and the species is endemic to the clearwater drainages of the Xingu system, where it occupies sand-substrate streams with moderate current.

Taxonomy & naming

Moenkhausia eurystaenia was described by Manoela M. F. Marinho in 2010 in the journal Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 8, issue 3). The holotype (MZUSP 106058) was collected from the Rio Von den Steinen, at coordinates 13°14'19"S 54°53'01"W, in the Rio Ronura drainage of the Rio Xingu basin, near Nova Ubiratã, Mato Grosso, Brazil. The valid name and authority are confirmed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (California Academy of Sciences).

The genus Moenkhausia belongs to the family Characidae and comprises a large assemblage of small to mid-sized tetras distributed across South America, particularly in the Amazon and Orinoco basins. Within the genus, M. eurystaenia is most closely allied to species sharing the broad lateral stripe morphology, but it is distinguished from them by the reduced anal-fin ray count (18–21) and lower vertebral count (34 versus 36–37 in its near relatives), characters noted as diagnostic in the original description.

No subspecies are recognised, and no synonyms have been proposed since the original description. The species has not been reassigned to another genus.

Morphology

Adults of Moenkhausia eurystaenia are small and slender, reaching a maximum of 1.5 in standard length; paratypes in the type series ranged from 0.5–1.5 in SL. The body is moderately compressed and elongate, typical of the smaller Moenkhausia, with a rounded snout and a terminal mouth.

The defining feature of the species is its broad, dark longitudinal stripe, which begins at the opercle and extends to the end of the caudal peduncle. This band is distinctly wider than the analogous stripe in closely related species and gives the fish a clean, high-contrast appearance even in small individuals. Background coloration is silvery to pale yellowish on the flanks, with the dark stripe providing the dominant visual impression.

Diagnostic meristic characters include 18–21 anal-fin rays (versus 24–26 in related congeners) and 34 vertebrae (versus 36–37). These osteological and meristic differences, combined with the stripe morphology, form the basis of the species diagnosis in the original description.

Habitat

Moenkhausia eurystaenia is endemic to the Rio Xingu basin of Mato Grosso, Brazil. The type locality is the Rio Von den Steinen in the Rio Ronura drainage, a clearwater tributary within this system. The species is associated with sandy substrate and moderate water flow, in the clearwater stream habitats characteristic of the central Brazilian plateau portions of the Xingu drainage.

Water conditions recorded for the Rio Tapajós region — a nearby drainage system sharing similar habitat character — suggest temperatures in the range of 72–82 °F and a pH of 6.0–7.5, consistent with the soft, slightly acidic to neutral clearwater streams typical of this part of Mato Grosso. The Xingu system is noted for its exceptional aquatic biodiversity and its clearwater character, with low conductivity and high transparency.

As an endemic restricted to a single river basin, M. eurystaenia has a limited natural range. Its distribution within the Xingu system is not fully documented beyond the type series.

Feeding

No detailed stomach-content analysis of Moenkhausia eurystaenia has been published. Based on the feeding ecology of congeners and the broader pattern in small Moenkhausia species, the species is likely an opportunistic omnivore taking small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and surface insects — as well as algae and organic detritus.

In aquarium settings, comparable small Moenkhausia accept good-quality flake and micro-pellet foods, supplemented with live or frozen items such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. A varied diet is generally recommended to maintain condition and colour in small characids. Feeding behaviour in the wild has not been separately described for this species.

Mating

Specific mating observations for Moenkhausia eurystaenia in the wild or in captivity have not been published. By analogy with the egg-scattering reproductive guild that includes virtually all small Moenkhausia, the species is presumed to practise open, non-guarding spawning in which males court females through chasing and parallel swimming, stimulating the simultaneous release of eggs and sperm among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over substrates.

No courtship displays or sexually dimorphic secondary characters have been described for the species in the literature. In related small tetras, mature females are typically deeper-bodied than males when gravid, providing the principal basis for sex determination in aquarium specimens. Spawning in small Moenkhausia is typically stimulated by soft, slightly acidic water, moderate temperature, and the presence of fine-leaved planting or spawning mops.

Breeding

No published breeding accounts specific to Moenkhausia eurystaenia are available. Based on the reproductive biology typical of small egg-scattering Moenkhausia, breeding can be expected to follow the standard pattern for this guild: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs scattered among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with no parental care and a marked tendency for adults to consume their own eggs if not removed.

For hobbyists attempting to spawn the species, the approach used for comparable Moenkhausia — a small, well-planted breeding tank with slightly acidic, soft, warm water; conditioning the adults on live and frozen foods; and harvesting eggs or removing adults promptly after spawning — provides a reasonable starting framework. Fry, when the species has been bred, would be expected to be small and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Detailed breeding data (clutch size, incubation period, fry growth rate) have not been reported for this species.

In the aquarium

Moenkhausia eurystaenia is a rare species in the aquarium trade; it is not commonly encountered at retail level and is largely absent from hobbyist literature. It appeared in print in the AquaVerse species database as a mid-sized small tetra, with recommended minimum tank volume of around 20 US gal and a group size of at least five individuals. Like most small Moenkhausia, it is expected to be gregarious and to display better behaviour, schooling cohesion, and reduced stress when kept in numbers.

Water parameters matching the clearwater Xingu habitat — soft, slightly acidic to neutral water at 72–82 °F and pH 6.0–7.5 — would best replicate natural conditions. A planted aquarium with open swimming space, subdued lighting, and dark substrate would suit the species and show the dark lateral stripe to advantage. Tankmates should be peaceful species of similar size; the species is not known to be aggressive.

Given the scarcity of this fish in trade and captive-breeding records, most aquarists will encounter it only in specialist collections. Its care is expected to be straightforward once specimens are obtained, on the basis of its ecological niche and the general hardiness of small Moenkhausia in suitable water.

Conservation

Moenkhausia eurystaenia is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (2022.2 assessment). The species is endemic to Mato Grosso, Brazil, confined to the Rio Xingu basin, but no immediate threats sufficient to warrant a threatened listing have been identified at the time of assessment.

The broader Rio Xingu basin faces significant anthropogenic pressures including hydroelectric development — most notably the Belo Monte dam complex — forest clearance, and agricultural expansion in the headwater regions of Mato Grosso. These pressures have fragmented habitats and altered hydrological regimes across the basin. As a narrow endemic, M. eurystaenia would be vulnerable to any degradation of the specific clearwater stream systems it inhabits, even if it is not currently considered threatened. Continued monitoring of the Rio Xingu's tributary systems is important for understanding the long-term status of endemic species such as this one.
