Moenkhausia hasemani is a small, slender characin endemic to the lower Tapajós River basin of Brazil, where it inhabits freshwater habitats in the Amazon's southern tributary network. First described by Carl Eigenmann in 1917 as a subspecies of M. lepidura and later elevated to full species rank, it is a benthopelagic tetra reaching around 2 in standard length. The IUCN assessed it as Least Concern in 2018, reflecting a stable population within its restricted Tapajós range.

Taxonomy & naming

Moenkhausia hasemani was originally described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1917 as a subspecies, Moenkhausia lepidura hasemani, placing it within the variable lepidura complex. Subsequent taxonomic work elevated it to full species status. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid name as Moenkhausia hasemani Eigenmann, 1917; as it was described directly in Moenkhausia and remains there, no parenthetical authority is used.

The species belongs to the large genus Moenkhausia, which encompasses well over 80 species distributed across South American freshwaters, primarily in the Amazon and Orinoco drainages. Moenkhausia is placed within the family Characidae, the hyper-diverse New World characins. The lepidura group to which M. hasemani belongs is characterised by a dark stripe along the caudal peduncle and base of the caudal fin, and several of its members are superficially similar, making firm identification reliant on meristic counts and fin-ray examination rather than colour pattern alone.

The specific epithet hasemani honours John D. Haseman, an American naturalist who collected fishes throughout Brazil in the early twentieth century and whose material formed a significant part of Eigenmann's descriptive work on South American characins.

Morphology

Moenkhausia hasemani is a small, slender-bodied tetra with a typical Moenkhausia profile: moderately compressed laterally, with a pointed snout, large eyes, and the adipose fin characteristic of most characids. Maximum recorded standard length is approximately 2 in, making it one of the smaller members of the genus.

As a member of the lepidura complex, M. hasemani shows a dark pigment stripe along the caudal peduncle that extends onto the median rays of the caudal fin, producing a prominent dark base mark on the tail — a feature that lends the complex its name (lepidura means 'scaled tail' in Greek). Body flanks are silvery, often with a faint iridescent sheen under good light. Detailed meristic data are sparse in widely available secondary sources, and precise fin-ray counts distinguishing it from congeners in the lepidura group require reference to the original description and formal taxonomic revisions.

Habitat

The species is recorded from the lower Tapajós River basin in the state of Pará, Brazil — a major southern tributary of the Amazon flowing northward to meet the main stem near Santarém. Within this drainage it occupies freshwater, benthopelagic habitats, meaning it lives and forages close to the substrate or in the lower water column rather than at the surface.

Detailed habitat data specific to M. hasemani are sparse. By analogy with closely related Moenkhausia species from the broader Amazon system, it likely frequents clear to slightly tannin-stained slow-flowing or standing waters — flooded forest margins, quiet backwaters, and stream edges with submerged vegetation and leaf litter. Water conditions in the Tapajós system tend toward soft, acidic to neutral chemistry, typical of many Amazonian tributaries. Related species in the lepidura complex occur across a pH range of roughly 5.5–7.0 and temperatures of approximately 73–82 °F (73–82 °F).

Feeding

Like other small Moenkhausia species, M. hasemani is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore, feeding on small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and other zooplankton — as well as organic detritus and, where available, plant material and small benthic prey items. Its benthopelagic habit suggests it forages both in the water column and along the substrate.

In the aquarium, closely related tetras in the lepidura complex accept a wide range of prepared foods: quality micro-pellets and fine flake form the staple, supplemented with small live or frozen foods such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and cyclops. Regular offerings of live or frozen invertebrates improve condition and support natural foraging behaviour. As with most small tetras, several small feedings per day are preferable to a single large meal.

Mating

Moenkhausia hasemani, like virtually all members of the genus, is an egg-scattering spawner without parental care. Breeding activity in the wild is likely timed to seasonal flood pulses that alter water temperature and chemistry and trigger spawning in many Amazon basin characins.

Males court receptive females with lateral displays and pursuit through fine-leaved vegetation or open water. Spawning typically occurs among submerged plant material or over a sandy substrate, where small adhesive eggs are scattered and left to develop unattended. Neither parent guards the eggs or fry.

Breeding

In an aquarium setting, M. hasemani can be bred using methods proven for other small Moenkhausia species. A separate breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic water, dim lighting, and a thick mat of fine-leaved plants or a synthetic spawning mop provides suitable conditions. Conditioning the adults on live and frozen foods brings them into spawning readiness.

The pair scatter small adhesive eggs among the plants; because the adults will eat eggs and fry if left in the breeding tank, they should be removed once spawning is complete. Eggs hatch within a few days at typical tropical temperatures of around 77–81 °F (77–81 °F). The tiny free-swimming fry require very small first foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry food — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Specific data on clutch size and exact incubation period for this species are not well documented in the available literature.

In the aquarium

Moenkhausia hasemani is not widely established in the commercial hobby trade and is rarely encountered in aquarium shops; most readily available Moenkhausia species are larger or more colourful congeners. Where it does appear, it is a peaceful, small schooling fish best kept in groups of six or more. A well-planted tank of 23.5 in or more, with subdued lighting and some tannin staining from driftwood or leaf litter, replicates its Amazonian biotope and brings out its best condition.

Water should be soft and slightly acidic to neutral — pH around 6.0–7.0 and temperatures of 73–82 °F (73–82 °F). It is a tolerant, undemanding species that coexists well with other small, peaceful South American fish: pygmy corydoras, small Apistogramma, or other Moenkhausia and Hyphessobrycon tetras. It poses no threat to plants and requires no special husbandry beyond the standard care expected of a small, soft-water Amazonian characin.

Conservation

Moenkhausia hasemani is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment completed in November 2018. The designation reflects the absence of identified major threats sufficient to qualify the species for a threatened category, and it is presumed to maintain a reasonably stable population across its range in the lower Tapajós basin.

Nonetheless, the Tapajós drainage has faced increasing pressure from large hydroelectric development — most notably the Belo Monte dam complex downstream on the Xingu, with ongoing proposals within the Tapajós system itself — which poses a broad threat to Amazonian fish biodiversity including range-restricted species such as this one. Any narrowly endemic fish in a tributary system is inherently more vulnerable to habitat alteration than a wide-ranging species, and the Tapajós endemics merit monitoring as infrastructure development continues in the region.
