Moenkhausia heikoi is a robust, large-eyed characid confined to the rapids of the Rio Xingu and its tributary the Rio Iriri in Pará, Brazil — a biotope defined by fast-moving white water, enormous boulders, and the dim sheltered spaces between them. Described in 2004, it reaches nearly 3.5 in and lives in loose groups in the swift current, making it both a compelling novelty and a genuine challenge to keep well. Infrequently exported due to the difficulty of collecting in the Xingu rapids, it commands high prices when it does reach the trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Moenkhausia heikoi was described by Jacques Géry and Axel Zarske in 2004. The type locality is the Rio Iriri, a left-bank tributary of the Rio Xingu upstream of Altamira, specifically the edge of an island between the Rio Novo and the Igarapé Grota, approximately 6 mi below the mouth of the Rio Novo, in the state of Pará, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Moenkhausia heikoi Géry & Zarske, 2004.

Moenkhausia is among the largest genera of Neotropical characids, with species distributed widely across South America in a variety of riverine and lacustrine habitats. M. heikoi is set apart from most congeners by its unusual affinity for rapids and rocky fast-water environments rather than the still or slow-flowing lowland waters preferred by the majority of the genus. The large, conspicuous eye with a pale reflective spot is a notable feature mentioned in early commercial accounts of the fish, and it likely aids vision in the turbid, turbulent conditions of Xingu rapids.

Morphology

Moenkhausia heikoi is a moderately robust characid recorded to 3.5 in total length, with a maximum weight of around 12 g. The body form is typical of active, current-adapted characids: somewhat fusiform, with a well-developed caudal peduncle suited to swimming against fast flow. The most immediately striking feature is the large eye, noted across commercial and hobbyist sources as unusually prominent for the genus and carrying a conspicuous light spot.

As with most Moenkhausia, the basic coloration is silver with scale-edge pigmentation that produces a reticulated or cross-hatched pattern on the flanks under good lighting. Specific colour details from wild and freshly imported specimens are not fully documented in accessible sources, but the large eye with its reflective element appears to be the key visual marker distinguishing it in the field and the trade.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Rio Xingu basin in Pará state, Brazil, with its type locality in the Rio Iriri, a major left-bank tributary. Within that basin it occupies fast-moving, highly oxygenated rapids rather than the calmer marginal and backwater zones inhabited by most characids. Biotope records describe it living in cave-like sheltered spaces between large boulders in the rapids, at depths of two metres or more, in groups of 10 to 25 individuals.

Water conditions recorded for its natural habitat reflect the oligotrophic, low-conductivity chemistry typical of the Rio Xingu system: temperature 73–82 °F, pH around 7.1, and extremely low conductivity near 20 µS/cm. The Xingu is a clearwater river running over ancient Precambrian shield rock, producing water that is soft, acidic to near-neutral, and low in dissolved minerals. The fast, well-oxygenated nature of the rapids habitat means dissolved oxygen is high, and replications of this in captivity are essential to keeping the fish in good condition.

Feeding

Like most Moenkhausia species, M. heikoi is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore that feeds on invertebrates, organic matter, and small organisms available in its current-swept rocky habitat. Specific gut-content studies are not recorded in accessible sources.

In the aquarium, newly imported specimens are reported to accept live and frozen foods readily — bloodworm, brine shrimp, Daphnia — and may eventually take high-quality dried foods, though adaptation to dry food is not guaranteed. Given the fish's active, rheophilic lifestyle, it likely has higher energy demands than sluggish lowland tetras, and varied feeding with live or frozen items is advisable for maintaining condition.

Mating

No detailed wild breeding behaviour has been documented for Moenkhausia heikoi. As a member of Moenkhausia and of Characidae broadly, it can be assumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, as is characteristic across the family.

Spawning has been observed in captivity according to hobbyist accounts, though successful rearing has not been reliably recorded in available sources. Eggs are presumably adhesive or semi-adhesive, scattered among rocks or fine-leaved substrate in the current, consistent with the pattern seen in other rheophilic characids. Males likely display with fin-spread and chasing behaviour before a short, vigorous spawning embrace.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Moenkhausia heikoi has not been well established in the hobby literature available at time of writing. Spawning attempts have been noted, but successful rearing to the fry stage has not been documented in accessible sources. The difficulty likely lies partly in replicating the highly oxygenated, fast-moving conditions of the Xingu rapids and in conditioning wild-caught adults, which form the bulk of stock in the trade.

For breeders wishing to attempt the species, the logical approach would be a well-oxygenated, high-flow breeding tank with smooth river gravel or rounded substrate, soft acidic water in the lower end of the temperature range (around 75–79 °F), and conditioning on varied live foods prior to any spawning attempt. Eggs and fry would need to be removed from the parents given the absence of parental care typical of the genus. Data on fry development and first foods remain sparse.

In the aquarium

Moenkhausia heikoi is a demanding species by the standards of the Moenkhausia genus, requiring conditions that reflect its Xingu rapids origin. A tank of at least 30 US gal with powerful filtration generating a strong, directed current is recommended; the fish will occupy the mid-water and lower zones around rockwork placed to create sheltered pockets and current breaks. Smooth river stones of varying sizes, stacked to form caves and overhangs, replicate the boulder-strewn rapids environment and give the fish the shelter they seek.

Water chemistry should be soft, low-conductivity, and near-neutral to slightly acidic: temperature 75–82 °F, pH 5.5–7.5, with conductivity ideally kept low. Dissolved oxygen must be high; surface agitation and supplemental aeration are advisable. The species is social and should be kept in a group; biotope records describe it in groups of 10–25, and smaller groups in captivity may produce stress and reduced activity.

Commercial availability is low due to the difficulty and expense of collecting in the Xingu rapids, and wild-caught individuals can be expensive. The fish's needs in terms of flow, oxygenation, and group size make it a specialist project rather than a general community fish, but for aquarists running biotope setups focused on the Rio Xingu system it is a distinctive and rewarding species.

Conservation

Moenkhausia heikoi was assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment recorded as completed on 7 November 2018. FishBase notes low fishing vulnerability and high population resilience, with a minimum population doubling time of less than 15 months. These metrics suggest the species can sustain some level of collection pressure under current conditions.

Nonetheless, the species is a Rio Xingu endemic, and the Xingu basin has faced significant anthropogenic pressure. The Belo Monte hydroelectric complex, constructed in the mid-reaches of the Rio Xingu, altered flow regimes and thermal stratification in portions of the river and affected the fish communities of the Volta Grande reach. Rheophilic species dependent on rapids habitats are particularly vulnerable to flow regulation, as their habitat is functionally defined by fast water. Although M. heikoi's current IUCN status is LC, continued monitoring of the Xingu's fast-water fish communities is warranted given ongoing hydrological changes in the basin.
