Moenkhausia hysterosticta is a small, slender characid from the middle rio Tocantins drainage of Brazil, described in 2007 by Lucinda, Malabarba and Benine from specimens collected near Ipueiras in Tocantins state. Its most arresting feature is a large, vertically elongated humeral blotch set unusually far back on the flank — between the fifth and eighth lateral-line scales — combined with a dark mark in the upper lobe of the caudal fin, a combination that immediately separates it from related members of the Moenkhausia lepidura group. The species remains little-known in the aquarium hobby but illustrates how careful morphological analysis of a speciose genus can still uncover genuinely new species from well-collected Neotropical river systems.

Taxonomy & naming

Moenkhausia hysterosticta was formally described by Paulo Lucinda, Luiz Malabarba and Ricardo Benine in 2007 in Zootaxa 1525(1): 61–68. The holotype (MCP 32559, 1.5 in SL) was collected at Ipueiras, Tocantins state, Brazil, in the rio Tocantins at approximately 11°19′S, 48°28′W. The species is placed in the large Neotropical characid genus Moenkhausia, which Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises as the valid genus, and the authority is written without parentheses because the species was described directly in Moenkhausia.

The new species was distinguished from other members of the M. lepidura group primarily by the position and shape of the humeral spot: in M. hysterosticta it is a large, vertically elongated blotch sitting posteriorly, spanning scales five through eight of the lateral line, rather than occupying the more anterior position typical of close relatives. An additional dark mark in the upper caudal-fin lobe, and the absence of a caudal-peduncle spot, further define the species. The description was based on material held at the Museu de Ciências e Tecnologia, Porto Alegre (MCP).

Morphology

The holotype specimen measured 1.5 in standard length (SL), and FishBase records a maximum of 2 in SL for the species — typical for small members of the M. lepidura group. The body is slender and laterally compressed in the manner of most Moenkhausia, with a moderately forked caudal fin and the large eyes characteristic of the genus.

The species is distinguished above all by its pigment pattern. The humeral blotch — a marking found in various forms across the M. lepidura complex — is shifted unusually far back in M. hysterosticta, forming a tall, vertically elongated dark spot between the fifth and eighth lateral-line scales. A distinct dark mark occupies the upper lobe of the caudal fin. Unlike some congeners there is no dark spot on the caudal peduncle. Beyond this patterning the meristic and morphometric details follow the general Moenkhausia plan; the specific paper in Zootaxa provides a full account of counts and proportions from the type series.

Habitat

Moenkhausia hysterosticta is known from the middle portions of the rio Tocantins drainage in central Brazil (Tocantins state). The Tocantins is a large, historically independent river system that drains the Cerrado uplands of central Brazil before meeting the lower Amazon system near the river's mouth; its middle reaches flow through a transition zone of cerrado savanna and gallery forest.

FishBase classifies the species as a tropical freshwater, benthopelagic fish. Specific microhabitat data for M. hysterosticta are sparse in the available literature; like many small characids of the region it likely inhabits the shallow, vegetated margins and clear-to-slightly-turbid waters of the main channel's tributaries and floodplain lagoons. Water conditions in the middle Tocantins are broadly typical of central Brazilian river systems: warm year-round, moderately acidic to near-neutral, and soft to moderately hard depending on proximity to the Cerrado soils.

Feeding

No specific dietary studies have been published for Moenkhausia hysterosticta. As a small omnivorous characid in the diverse Moenkhausia genus, it likely takes a broad range of small prey items in the wild: micro-crustaceans, insect larvae, terrestrial invertebrates falling onto the water surface, and opportunistic plant or algal material — the generalist feeding strategy common across most small members of the family Characidae in lowland South American rivers.

In an aquarium context, closely related Moenkhausia species accept a wide variety of prepared foods including good-quality flake and micro-granules, as well as small frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and bloodworm. A varied diet is likely to support best health and colouration in this and related species.

Mating

No published mating or courtship observations exist specifically for Moenkhausia hysterosticta. Members of the genus are generally egg-scattering open spawners with no parental care, a reproductive strategy widespread throughout the Characidae. Spawning in related Moenkhausia species typically involves males pursuing females among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or in open water, releasing eggs that fall or adhere loosely among plant material.

In the aquarium, related Moenkhausia are best conditioned in groups to encourage natural courtship interactions, and spawning activity is often greatest in the early morning. Dim lighting and the presence of fine-leaved plants or spawning mops seem to encourage egg deposition in congeners.

Breeding

No captive-breeding records specific to Moenkhausia hysterosticta appear in the available literature; the species is not established in the ornamental trade. Based on the biology of the genus and the broader Characidae, breeding behaviour is expected to follow the standard egg-scattering pattern: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved plants, hatching within 24–36 hours at tropical temperatures, with the adults providing no parental care and readily consuming their own eggs if left in the spawning vessel.

For related Moenkhausia species, breeders typically separate a conditioned pair or small group into a dedicated breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic, warm water (around 75–82 °F), fine-leaved plants or synthetic mops, and subdued lighting. Eggs and adults are separated promptly after spawning; the tiny fry require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.

In the aquarium

Moenkhausia hysterosticta is not currently established in the ornamental fish trade and is unlikely to be encountered by hobbyists outside specialist collections. Its small adult size (around 2 in SL) and the general temperament of Moenkhausia suggest it would suit a well-planted community aquarium with water parameters appropriate for soft, slightly acidic to neutral tropical freshwater — temperatures in the range of 75–82 °F and pH 5.5–7.0 would reflect the conditions inferred for the middle Tocantins.

Like most small characids, members of the genus do best in groups of six or more, which reduces skittishness and encourages the natural shoaling behaviour that makes these fish most visible and active. Peaceful tankmates of similar size — other small tetras, dwarf cichlids, and bottom-dwelling species — are appropriate. Any future aquarium interest in the species would likely depend on specialist breeding programmes sourcing legally collected stock.

Conservation

Moenkhausia hysterosticta is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment recorded in March 2021. FishBase notes the species has high resilience (minimum population doubling time less than 15 months) and low vulnerability to fishing pressure, consistent with the biology of a small, fast-reproducing characid.

The species is restricted to the middle rio Tocantins drainage in Brazil. The Tocantins has been substantially altered by hydroelectric development — the Tucuruí dam (completed 1984) created one of the world's largest artificial lakes in the lower river, and subsequent projects have fragmented the middle reaches. The long-term population trajectory of M. hysterosticta in the context of ongoing Tocantins basin development has not been specifically assessed, but the LC status reflects current data suggesting the species is not facing immediate range-wide population decline.
