Taxonomy & naming
Moenkhausia icae was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1908 in a paper published in the Bulletin of the Museum of Comparative Zoology (volume 52, number 6). Eigenmann originally treated it as a subspecies — Moenkhausia lepidurus icae — but subsequent work elevated it to full species status. Type specimens are deposited at the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard: MCZ 20810 (one specimen, now missing) and MCZ 20812 (a series of thirty). Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Moenkhausia icae Eigenmann, 1908; because the species was described in Moenkhausia and remains there, no parenthetical authority is required.
The species belongs to the Moenkhausia lepidura group, a set of small, closely related characins united by a shared caudal-fin dark-stripe pattern in which a distinct dark band runs along the lower lobe or the entire base of the caudal fin. Moenkhausia itself is one of the largest genera in the family Characidae, and generic boundaries within the broader tetra assemblage have been revised repeatedly; the family-level placement of Characidae is maintained here following current ichthyological usage.
Morphology
Moenkhausia icae is a small, moderately compressed characin reaching a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 1.5 in. Like others in the M. lepidura group it is silvery-bodied with the genus's characteristic large, reflective scales. The most distinctive marking is the dark pigmentation at the base of the caudal fin, a feature shared across the lepidura group but varying in extent among its members.
The overall body plan follows the Moenkhausia template: a relatively deep, oval profile, a small adipose fin posterior to the dorsal, and large eyes typical of a small Amazonian characin. Data on detailed meristics and colouration for this species specifically are sparse in accessible literature; the species is not among the frequently illustrated Moenkhausia in the hobby press.
Habitat
The known range of Moenkhausia icae encompasses the Rio Iça drainage (known in Colombia and Peru as the Río Putumayo) and the Rio Japurá, both major left-bank tributaries of the upper Amazon in the Brazilian state of Amazonas. The type locality is the Rio Iça itself. These rivers flow through lowland Amazonian rainforest, and the species is considered a benthopelagic freshwater inhabitant — living and foraging in the lower to mid water column of river channels and associated flooded habitats.
Amazonian blackwater and whitewater systems in this region typically present soft, warm, and often acidic to mildly acidic conditions, though large river channels like the Iça can be more sediment-laden and moderately buffered than the classic blackwater streams. Specific water-chemistry data for M. icae at type-locality sites are not well documented in the accessible literature; temperature preferences are inferred from the broadly tropical Amazonian distribution, generally 75–82 °F.
Feeding
FishBase records Moenkhausia icae as carnivorous, with a trophic level of approximately 3.2, placing it among small predators that feed primarily on invertebrates rather than plant material. The natural diet of small Amazonian Moenkhausia typically consists of microcrustaceans, insect larvae, small terrestrial insects that fall to the water surface, and zooplankton.
In the aquarium, Moenkhausia species of similar size to M. icae are generally undemanding feeders that accept good-quality flake, micro-pellets, and frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, and Cyclops. Varied feeding with a live or frozen component supports better colouration and conditioning.
Mating
No species-specific mating observations for Moenkhausia icae appear to have been published. Based on the biology of closely related Moenkhausia, including the well-studied M. sanctaefilomenae (red-eyed tetra), the species is expected to be an egg-scattering free-spawner with no pair bond and no parental investment. Males in breeding condition in the genus typically display by chasing females through fine-leaved vegetation, with spawning triggered by warmer water, morning light, and good feeding condition.
Conditioning groups of adults together rather than isolated pairs tends to improve spawning readiness in Moenkhausia, as group social dynamics — including mild male competition — seem to stimulate reproductive behaviour in this genus.
Breeding
Moenkhausia species spawn in open water over fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops, scattering non-adhesive to slightly adhesive eggs that settle among vegetation or substrate. Adults show no parental care and will consume eggs if left in the breeding vessel; standard practice is to remove spawners after egg deposition or to transfer the spawning medium to a separate rearing tank.
At Amazonian water temperatures of roughly 79–82 °F, eggs of genus members typically hatch within 24 hours, with larvae becoming free-swimming within a further two to three days. Fry require very fine first foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry food — before transitioning to newly hatched brine shrimp. These generalised observations apply to the genus; no published breeding account specific to M. icae was located in the sources available for this article.
In the aquarium
Moenkhausia icae is not a regularly traded species in the aquarium hobby and does not appear to have an established common name. As a small Amazonian characin in the M. lepidura group it could be expected to suit a planted community aquarium with soft to moderately hard, warm water (75–82 °F) and subdued or moderate lighting. Fish of comparable size and temperament — other small tetras, smaller rasboras, and peaceful bottom-dwellers — would make suitable companions.
Because the species is rarely encountered commercially, most aquarists are unlikely to encounter it outside specialist importers dealing in unusual Amazonian tetras. Care requirements, where they can be inferred from the genus and family, are not demanding: good water quality, a varied diet, and a properly cycled aquarium suited to tropical South American characins.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Moenkhausia icae as Least Concern (LC) in November 2018, a status that reflects the species' occurrence across the broad and largely intact watersheds of the Rio Iça and Rio Japurá in the Brazilian Amazon. These drainages, while under increasing pressure from deforestation, agricultural runoff, and small-scale gold mining, still retain large extents of intact riparian and floodplain habitat, and no population-level declines have been documented for this species specifically.
The Amazonian small-tetra fauna is vastly understudied, and the biology and precise range limits of many Moenkhausia species — including M. icae — are not well known from field surveys. Continued monitoring of Amazonian ichthyofaunal diversity and the health of major tributary systems remains important context for any long-term reassessment of species in this group.
