Moenkhausia inrai is a small, benthopelagic characid of French Guiana and Suriname, found in the Maroni and Approuague River basins where it ranks among the dominant species in principal rivers. Described by Jacques Géry in 1992 from a type locality on the Approuague drainage, this modest tetra has attracted little aquarium attention yet occupies an ecologically significant position in Guianan shield ichthyofaunas. Taxonomy & naming

Moenkhausia inrai was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1992, with the original description published in the Revue française d'Aquariologie Herpétologie (vol. 19, no. 3, p. 74). The type locality is Crique Roche au-dessus du Saut Grand Canori on the Approuague drainage in French Guiana. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the name as valid, with the full citation Moenkhausia inrai Géry, 1992; the authority is not parenthesised because the species was described directly in Moenkhausia, where it remains.

Moenkhausia is a large and taxonomically complex neotropical genus within the family Characidae. It encompasses dozens of species distributed broadly across South American drainages, many of which share similar, nondescript silver-and-stripe body plans that make field identification and museum sorting difficult. M. inrai belongs to the Guianan fauna and is distributed in both French Guiana and Suriname according to Catalog of Fishes records, suggesting its range spans at least the lower Guiana Shield river systems draining toward the Atlantic coast.

Morphology

Moenkhausia inrai reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 2.5 in, placing it in the mid-size range for the genus. FishBase assigns it a trophic level of 3.3 (± 0.5), consistent with an omnivorous feeding strategy. Like most Moenkhausia, it is a laterally compressed, fusiform characid with the family's characteristic adipose fin, a forked caudal fin, and a relatively large eye typical of schooling fish that navigate both open water and shaded forest-stream environments.

Detailed meristic data and colour descriptions for M. inrai are sparse in the accessible literature, reflecting the species' limited treatment outside the original description and regional fish surveys. The benthopelagic habitat assignment by FishBase suggests a fish that occupies the lower and mid water column rather than being strongly surface-associated, though it presumably schools in the manner typical of the genus.

Habitat

This species occurs in the Maroni and Approuague River basins of French Guiana, with records extending into Suriname. Both systems drain the Guiana Shield, an ancient geological formation characterised by blackwater and clearwater rivers running through lowland tropical rainforest. FishBase describes M. inrai as very common in principal rivers and one of the dominant species in its range — an unusually strong abundance indicator for a smaller characid.

Guiana Shield rivers where Moenkhausia species occur typically feature warm, soft, and mildly acidic to neutral water, often stained brown by dissolved humic and tannic compounds where the drainage runs through forested catchments. Sand and gravel substrates, submerged woody debris, and marginal vegetation structure the habitat. The species' benthopelagic assignment suggests it makes use of mid-to-lower water column niches in these environments.

Feeding

With a trophic level of 3.3, Moenkhausia inrai is an omnivore positioned at a generalist consumer level — above pure herbivores and primary consumers but well below piscivores. This is consistent with the opportunistic feeding strategy documented for many Moenkhausia species, which consume small invertebrates, insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and plant or algal material according to seasonal and local availability.

In the rivers of French Guiana, flood-pulse dynamics and the associated pulses of invertebrate prey are thought to drive feeding opportunities for abundant small characids. Mating

No published observations of courtship behaviour specific to Moenkhausia inrai have been located. For temperate aquarists who have kept other Moenkhausia species, breeding cues typically involve a slight drop in water temperature, increased water flow mimicking seasonal flooding, and access to fine-leaved vegetation or submerged fibrous surfaces where adhesive eggs can lodge. Whether M. inrai follows this pattern precisely has not been confirmed in the hobby literature.

Breeding

Moenkhausia inrai has not been documented as bred in captivity in the sources reviewed. By analogy with closely related Moenkhausia species, it would be expected to scatter small adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over a soft substrate, with hatching occurring within 24–48 hours at tropical water temperatures. The adults would offer no parental care and would consume any eggs or fry they encounter, requiring separation of spawning adults from the eggs in a controlled breeding attempt.

The fry of small Moenkhausia species are typically tiny at hatching and require infusoria or comparably fine first foods before they can accept newly hatched brine shrimp. Given the species' apparent abundance in its native rivers, it likely reproduces readily when seasonally appropriate conditions are met, but aquarium-specific breeding data for this species remain unavailable.

In the aquarium

Moenkhausia inrai is rarely encountered in the aquarium hobby and is not a commercially traded species in most markets. Its modest size of up to 2.5 in SL and the abundance it shows in its native rivers suggest it would be straightforward to maintain, following the general husbandry principles applicable to mid-size Guianan tetras: a well-filtered aquarium with soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water, temperatures in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius, and a school of at least six individuals to bring out natural behaviour.

The species' benthopelagic tendencies suggest it would appreciate a tank with a defined substrate layer — fine sand or gravel — and some cover such as driftwood or leaf litter reflecting the tannin-stained rivers of the Guiana Shield. It is likely compatible with similarly sized, peaceful community fish from comparable biotopes. The absence of documented aquarium experience means husbandry notes here are necessarily inferred from the genus and origin rather than direct observation.

Conservation

Moenkhausia inrai is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, a status reflecting its reported abundance and broad local distribution across the Maroni and Approuague drainages of French Guiana and into Suriname. FishBase describes it as very common in principal rivers and one of the dominant species in its range — a basis for confidence that the population is not currently at elevated risk.

The Guiana Shield rivers that M. inrai inhabits remain among the less disturbed large river systems in South America, though gold-mining activity (artisanal and industrial) poses documented threats to water quality and fish communities in parts of French Guiana and Suriname. Climate-driven shifts in rainfall and river hydrology are also monitored concerns for Guianan fish communities. At present, none of these pressures are considered to have reduced M. inrai populations to a level that would change its Least Concern standing.
