Moenkhausia is the largest genus of characids by species count, encompassing a wide array of small to medium-sized fishes across tropical South America. The species epithet latissima is Latin for 'very broad' or 'widest', a reference to the body form that Eigenmann noted in the original description. Modern molecular and morphological work has led some authorities to reorganise large portions of the traditional Characidae, and Catalog of Fishes notes that this species is sometimes placed within the broadly redefined Acestrorhamphidae; the family assignment on this page follows standard hobbyist-reference usage and the name as originally framed.

Morphology

Moenkhausia latissima reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 3.5 in, making it one of the larger members of the genus.
