Moenkhausia loweae is a small tetra described from Brazil's Araguaia drainage in the state of Goiás — one of dozens of understated small characins that populate the clear-water forest streams of central Brazil's cerrado and transition zones. Described by the prolific French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1992, the species has received little attention in the aquarium hobby and remains largely absent from the English-language literature, but it occupies a biogeographically interesting position within the species-rich genus Moenkhausia.

Moenkhausia loweae was described by Jacques Géry in 1992, placing it within the large and taxonomically challenging genus Moenkhausia of the family Characidae. The type locality is associated with the Araguaia river system of Goiás state, in central Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the authority for the valid name Moenkhausia loweae Géry, 1992.

The genus Moenkhausia is one of the largest in the Characidae, comprising well over a hundred species distributed broadly across South American river systems. Many species are superficially similar — small, silvery tetras with a caudal spot or stripe — and the group has been subject to ongoing taxonomic revision. The species' placement within Moenkhausia reflects the characters of the original description; phylogenetic work on Moenkhausia and related genera continues to refine circumscription of the genus.

Morphology

Moenkhausia loweae is a small tetra, with size typical of the genus at approximately 1–1.5 in standard length, though precise measurements for this species are sparse in the published literature. Like most Moenkhausia, it is a small, laterally compressed, silvery characin with the family's characteristic adipose fin and toothed jaws.

Detailed morphological data specific to M. loweae are not widely documented in accessible sources. The genus Moenkhausia generally shows a modest degree of sexual size dimorphism, with females becoming noticeably deeper-bodied and fuller in the abdominal region when in spawning condition — a feature typical of small egg-scattering characins rather than a pronounced species-specific character.

Habitat

Moenkhausia loweae is recorded from the Araguaia river system in the state of Goiás, central Brazil. The Araguaia is a major tributary of the Tocantins, draining a large portion of the Brazilian interior. In this region, smaller tributary streams — particularly those draining forested gallery woodland and cerrado savanna — tend to be clear-water systems with sandy or rocky substrates, moderate to gentle current, and dappled light filtered through riparian vegetation.

Forest stream habitats in the Araguaia catchment typically have soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, though detailed physico-chemical data for the specific localities of M. loweae are not available in accessible published sources. The species is associated with lowland freshwater systems and is presumed to inhabit the shallow, vegetated margins and mid-water of small to medium streams.

Feeding

No specific dietary studies have been published for Moenkhausia loweae. Like the majority of small Moenkhausia species, it is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore, taking small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans — as well as fine organic material and possibly algae, in accordance with the feeding ecology typical of small characins inhabiting clear-water stream environments.

In an aquarium setting, small Moenkhausia species generally accept a wide variety of prepared foods including fine flake and micro-pellets, supplemented with frozen or live small invertebrates such as brine shrimp nauplii, Daphnia, and Cyclops. A varied diet supports condition and colour in small tetras, and regular inclusion of live or frozen food items is beneficial.

Mating

Moenkhausia loweae has not been documented in detail in the hobbyist or scientific literature with respect to its specific reproductive behaviour. Based on the biology of the genus and family, it is presumed to follow the pattern typical of small Moenkhausia: an egg-scattering open spawner that deposits adhesive eggs among fine-leaved vegetation or over substrate, with no parental care and no pair bond.

Males of small Moenkhausia species typically engage in brief, active courtship involving chasing and parallel swimming before the pair release eggs and milt simultaneously. Spawning in the genus tends to occur in the morning hours and may be triggered by slight temperature increases or improved diet and condition. Females fill with eggs relatively quickly when well-fed, becoming noticeably rounder in the abdomen.

Breeding

There are no documented breeding accounts for Moenkhausia loweae in the hobby literature reviewed for this article. Based on the reproductive mode typical of the genus, the species would be expected to scatter small, adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over a fine substrate, with an incubation period of roughly 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures and no parental involvement. Adults should be removed after spawning to prevent egg predation.

Fry of small Moenkhausia species are generally tiny at hatching and require infusoria or very fine liquid fry foods initially, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and finely powdered flake as they grow. Growth is typically rapid in the first weeks when adequate nutrition is provided.

In the aquarium

Moenkhausia loweae is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade and has not established a presence in the hobby. It has no widely used common name in English. As an obscure Brazilian tetra, it is unlikely to be available from commercial suppliers; specimens, if encountered, would most likely originate from specialist breeders or research collections.

If kept, it would be expected to suit conditions appropriate for other small, clear-water Moenkhausia from central Brazilian river systems: a well-filtered aquarium with gentle flow, soft to moderately hard water in the neutral to slightly acidic range, ample planting, and a diet of varied small foods. As a schooling species it should be kept in groups. Its husbandry requirements are presumed undemanding by the standards of small tetras, but data sparse.

Conservation

Moenkhausia loweae has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). This is typical for the many small, poorly documented Brazilian tetra species that have received no formal conservation evaluation. The absence of an IUCN assessment does not imply the species is secure; rather, it reflects the limited resources available for evaluating the large number of Neotropical small-fish species against which conservation attention is generally directed toward larger, more commercially or ecologically prominent taxa.

The Araguaia catchment, where the species is recorded, faces ongoing pressures from agricultural expansion, deforestation of riparian gallery forest, hydropower development, and associated siltation and water-quality changes — threats generic to Goiás state watersheds. The conservation status of M. loweae in light of these pressures is unknown.
