Taxonomy & naming
Moenkhausia moisae was described by Jacques Géry, Pierre Planquette, and Pierre-Yves Le Bail in 1995, in the context of their extensive work on the freshwater fish fauna of French Guiana and adjacent Guiana Shield drainages. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats it as a valid species within Moenkhausia. The authority is written without parentheses, as the species was described directly in the genus where it currently resides.
Moenkhausia is one of the largest genera in the family Characidae, with well over 100 described species spanning much of tropical South America. The genus is defined by the presence of scales on the caudal-fin base and a complete lateral line, characters that distinguish it from many superficially similar small characids, but internal relationships within the group are complex and the genus may not be monophyletic in its current circumscription. Where exactly M. moisae sits within the genus awaits modern phylogenetic treatment.
The specific epithet moisae is a proper noun or toponym derived from a locality or reference associated with the original collection material; the precise derivation is not widely documented outside the original description, and no vernacular English name for this species appears to be in general circulation.
Morphology
Moenkhausia moisae is a small, fusiform characid with the laterally compressed, moderately deep body typical of the genus. As with most Moenkhausia species it carries a complete lateral line, a small adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins, and scales covering the base of the caudal fin. Precise meristic data — scale counts, fin-ray counts, and maximum size — are documented in the original description but are not widely reproduced in secondary literature accessible without the primary paper.
The general coloration is likely silver to yellowish-silver with a dark lateral stripe or caudal peduncle spot, pigmentation patterns shared across much of the genus. Detailed colour notes and any distinctive markings that separate M. moisae from sympatric congeners are matters for the original description. Data are sparse in open sources for this species.
Habitat
The type locality and collection records for Moenkhausia moisae are associated with Guiana Shield drainages, the mosaic of rivers and streams flowing off the ancient uplands of northeastern South America that encompass parts of French Guiana, Suriname, Guyana, Venezuela, and northern Brazil. This region is characterised by two distinct water types: blackwaters stained dark with humic acids and extremely low in minerals, and clearwaters that are similarly acidic and soft but less coloured.
Small Moenkhausia species in this region are typically found in shallow, slow to moderately flowing forest streams and flooded marginal zones, often among leaf litter, submerged roots, and overhanging vegetation that shade the water and supply terrestrial invertebrate prey. Water temperatures in these habitats range from roughly 72–82 °F seasonally, with pH commonly below 6.5 and conductivity very low. Specific locality data for M. moisae are not widely documented in open sources beyond the type-locality region.
Feeding
Like most small Moenkhausia species, M. moisae is almost certainly an opportunistic omnivore in the wild, taking small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and terrestrial insects fallen to the water surface — along with plant fragments, algae, and organic detritus. This generalised feeding strategy is characteristic of the genus and of small characids in forest-stream habitats across the Guiana Shield.
No published dietary studies specific to this species are available in open literature. In aquaria, congeners with similar ecology accept a wide variety of foods including good-quality small flake and micro-pellets, live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, and bloodworm, and vegetable-based supplements. A varied diet maintains colour and vitality.
Mating
No published observations of mating behaviour in Moenkhausia moisae are available. By analogy with other small Moenkhausia and the broader Characidae, the species almost certainly reproduces by open egg-scattering: males pursue females and spawning occurs in short bursts among fine-leaved vegetation, submerged roots, or over the substrate, with eggs scattered and left untended.
In many small characids the spawning stimulus is a drop in barometric pressure associated with rainfall, combined with slight water changes. Sexually mature individuals are likely distinguished by the fuller abdomen of ripe females and by more intense or iridescent body coloration in males, as is common in the genus, though specific sexual dimorphism for this species is undocumented.
Breeding
Moenkhausia moisae has not been reported in the aquarium hobby literature as a captive-bred species, and no breeding accounts appear to be available in open sources. Given its membership in Moenkhausia and origin in soft, acidic Guiana Shield waters, captive breeding would logically follow the approach used for similar species: soft, warm, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0–6.8, temperature 77–81 °F), fine-leaved spawning plants or synthetic mops, and separation of adults from eggs after spawning to prevent predation.
Eggs of small characids in this group are typically small and semi-adhesive, hatching within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, with free-swimming fry emerging a few days after that. Fry would require very fine first foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry food — before progressing to freshly hatched brine shrimp. These are inferences from close congeners; data specific to M. moisae are sparse.
In the aquarium
Moenkhausia moisae is not an established species in the aquarium hobby and is not known to be in regular commercial trade. It is occasionally encountered by specialist collectors with access to Guiana Shield export stock, but most aquarists are unlikely to come across it by name. Any specimens that do appear should be treated as a soft-water, blackwater-type tetra: warm (75–81 °F), very soft, acidic water replicating its native environment, a well-planted or leaf-litter-decorated aquarium with subdued lighting, and the company of other small, peaceful characids or similarly adapted species.
As a schooling fish it should be kept in groups of at least six to eight individuals. It is not expected to be aggressive toward tankmates, and it would be unsuitable for hard alkaline community tanks. Given its obscurity, husbandry notes specific to this species are minimal; keepers should treat it conservatively as a sensitive Guiana Shield tetra until more detailed accounts become available.
Conservation
Moenkhausia moisae has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation status. The species is relatively little-known even by scientific standards, with a restricted set of locality records from the Guiana Shield region.
The broader Guiana Shield ichthyofauna is considered one of the world's most biodiverse freshwater fish assemblages, and many of its smaller, range-restricted species face mounting pressures from deforestation, small-scale gold mining (which releases mercury and destroys stream habitats), and changes to river hydrology. Whether M. moisae faces specific threats depends on the extent of its range and local habitat conditions — questions that await a fuller distributional survey and, eventually, a formal IUCN assessment.
