Moenkhausia mutum is a small characid described in 2016 from headwater streams of the rio Arinos drainage in Mato Grosso, Brazil, whose type locality gives the species its name: the municipality of Nova Mutum. Reaching around 2.5 in standard length, it is distinguished from its congeners by intense dark pigmentation on the dorsal and anal fin-rays, a vertically elongate humeral spot, and a relatively high count of branched anal-fin rays. Like many small tetras restricted to a single river drainage, it remains little-known outside the primary literature.

Taxonomy & naming

Moenkhausia mutum was described in 2016 by Fernando Cesar Paiva Dagosta and Manoela Maria Ferreira Marinho in the journal Neotropical Ichthyology. The holotype measures 2.5 in standard length; paratypes include a specimen of 2 in SL. The type locality is within Nova Mutum Municipality, Mato Grosso State, Brazil, in the rio Arinos drainage — a tributary of the rio Juruena and part of the upper rio Tapajós basin.

The specific epithet mutum is a reference to Nova Mutum, the municipality where the type material was collected. Moenkhausia is one of the largest genera in Characidae and encompasses a diverse assemblage of medium-sized tetras distributed across South America. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid name as Moenkhausia mutum Dagosta & Marinho, 2016.

Morphology

Moenkhausia mutum attains a maximum known standard length of approximately 2.5 in (the holotype), though most specimens in the type series are smaller, with the size range across all type material spanning roughly 1–2.5 in SL. FishBase records a maximum size of 2.5 in SL for the species.

The species is distinguished within Moenkhausia by the combination of intense dark pigmentation concentrated on the dorsal and anal fin-rays, a humeral spot that is vertically elongate rather than rounded or diffuse, and a branched anal-fin ray count of 20 to 23 (modally 21), which falls at the higher end of the range seen in congeners. Like most moenkhausiins it has a generally silvery, laterally compressed body. The dark fin markings are the most reliable diagnostic feature in the field.

Habitat

The species has been collected from small tributaries and headwater streams within the rio Arinos drainage, specifically from the córrego Caju and rio Criquiri, which are low-order streams in the upper Tapajós basin of Mato Grosso State, Brazil. This is lowland tropical freshwater, benthopelagic in ecology, with populations doubling times of less than 15 months suggesting a relatively productive environment.

The original description notes that some riparian forest in the type-locality area has been cleared for cattle pasture, which is typical of the agricultural expansion frontier in central Mato Grosso. Despite this pressure, the authors assessed the species as likely widespread enough across the drainage that local disturbance has not critically reduced its range.

Feeding

No formal diet data have been published for Moenkhausia mutum. By analogy with other mid-sized moenkhausiins from comparable Amazonian tributary habitats, it is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore taking small invertebrates, insect larvae, and plant or organic matter available in the water column and at the substrate surface.

In the aquarium it would be expected to accept a standard range of small tetra foods including quality flake, small pellets, and frozen or live invertebrates such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. Given the absence of specific published feeding observations, keepers should treat it as a generalised omnivore and offer dietary variety.

Mating

No mating behaviour has been documented for Moenkhausia mutum in the scientific literature. As a moenkhausiine characid, it almost certainly follows the open egg-scattering reproductive strategy universal in the group: spawning among fine-leaved vegetation or over the substrate, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs and no parental care from either sex.

Males of many Moenkhausia species show mild courtship chasing prior to spawning, but no specific display or pairing behaviour has been described for this species. The high fecundity implied by the short population doubling time recorded by FishBase is consistent with a typical small-to-medium tetra reproductive output.

Breeding

Breeding in captivity has not been formally documented for Moenkhausia mutum. Based on the biology of closely related congeners, it would be expected to scatter small, adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with no parental investment. The adults would likely eat their own eggs, so breeders wishing to raise fry should remove adults or transfer the spawning medium to a separate rearing container.

Incubation and larval rearing parameters are not published. General guidance for similarly sized moenkhausiins suggests eggs hatch within two to three days at tropical temperatures, with the yolk-sac absorbed shortly thereafter and fry requiring very small first foods such as infusoria or rotifers before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.

In the aquarium

Moenkhausia mutum is not an established aquarium species and is rarely if ever available in the hobby trade. It was described from wild-collected specimens in a remote headwater system and has not entered hobbyist circulation in any meaningful way as of the date of this article.

Were it to become available, the care requirements would be consistent with other small to mid-sized moenkhausiins from the Tapajós basin: a well-filtered tropical freshwater aquarium, temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius, soft to moderately hard slightly acidic to neutral water, and a varied omnivore diet. A school of at least six individuals would be expected to reduce skittishness and bring out natural behaviour. Its dark-tinged fins could make it an attractive niche interest for collectors of less-common tetras.

Conservation

Moenkhausia mutum has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; FishBase records the species as Not Evaluated (NE). The authors of the original description noted in Neotropical Ichthyology that the species appears to be distributed widely enough across the rio Arinos drainage that it could be characterised as Least Concern, despite some documented riparian forest degradation for pasture conversion in the type-locality area.

The upper Tapajós basin continues to face agricultural expansion pressure, and small headwater endemics are inherently vulnerable to catchment-level land-use change. An official IUCN assessment would require range surveys to confirm the extent of occurrence and area of occupancy. Until such data are gathered, the species' status remains uncertain beyond the descriptive authors' informal characterisation.
