Moenkhausia naponis is a small characin described by James E. Böhlke in 1958 from the Napo River drainage of Ecuador. Reaching roughly 2 in standard length, it belongs to the large, diverse genus Moenkhausia — a group scattered widely across South America's lowland river systems. Like many of its congeners it remains more familiar to taxonomists than to aquarists, with relatively little husbandry literature devoted to it.

Taxonomy & naming

Moenkhausia naponis was described by James E. Böhlke in 1958. The species epithet naponis refers to the Napo River, the type locality from which the original specimens were collected. The Napo drains parts of Ecuador and northeastern Peru before joining the Amazon system, and the species name commemorates that drainage in the Latinized genitive form.

The genus Moenkhausia belongs to the family Characidae and encompasses a large number of small to medium-sized tetras found across tropical South America. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing authority for the valid name Moenkhausia naponis Böhlke, 1958. The genus has been the subject of ongoing revision, and species boundaries and phylogenetic placement within Characidae continue to be refined as molecular and morphological datasets accumulate.

Feeding

Group keeping of six or more individuals is recommended for all schooling Moenkhausia, as the fish are more confident and display more naturally in numbers. Compatible tankmates would be other small, peaceful characins, dwarf cichlids, and small catfishes. Because the species is rarely traded, most animals likely reach hobbyists as bycatch in wild imports from the Napo or upper Amazon drainage rather than as targeted species.

Conservation

Moenkhausia naponis has not received a dedicated assessment on the IUCN Red List based on available records; no formal evaluation of its extinction risk under IUCN criteria has been published. FishBase records the species from Ecuador, where the Napo drainage faces ongoing pressures from deforestation, agricultural runoff, hydrocarbon extraction, and infrastructure development in the Ecuadorian Amazon.
